KZN floods claim one life, leaving several injured
DURBAN: One person has died, leaving several others injured after a heavy rain collapsed a house in Umlazi P section on Friday, 25 April 2025.
The heavy rain collapsed a house in Umlazi P section, claiming one life and injuring several others who were rushed to the nearest clinics and hospital.
Other sections impacted in Umlazi are Chicago in AA Section, J Section, and Ward 78 near KwaMgaga High School, reported IOL .
The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, Siboniso Amstrong Duma, announced that he would visit families affected by the flooding to offer condolences.
Duma said, 'Following heavy rains that wreaked havoc in Durban this morning, I have decided to wrap up my engagement in the legislature and be with distressed communities.'
On Friday, he told the KZN Legislature that the Department would invest over R13 billion in flood-resistant building materials for road infrastructure.
'There is a need for better disaster preparedness and climate resilience. As a department, we must invest in flood-resistant materials and innovative methods to build structures to withstand he weather, such as floating bridges to adapt to rising water levels,' he said.
Durban motorists are urged to be cautious of submerged manholes that were caused by floods, reported East Coast Radio .
Andrea Mathios, a Marshall Security official, said that his team has been keeping a close eye on routes in Durban.
'We've also got the rising rivers in the Avoca area and it's starting to rise, and I think it probably will reach a peak in the next two or three hours, as it starts to subside. But the traffic out there is absolutely chaotic,' he said.
He added that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to clear the damage caused by the heavy rain.
Mathios said, ' You can actually see that the stormwater drains are completely blocked, and this is an issue that needs to be addressed because if we don't stop clearing these stormwater drains, we are going to keep having these problems. They're going to keep repeating themselves. The M19 was an absolute nightmare this morning.'

Estcourt school suspends classes after strong winds collapse roof
Strong winds have been sweeping across KwaZulu-Natal, causing significant damage, including the partial collapse of Ntabamhlophe Primary School in the KwaDlamini area. As a result, the school has suspended all classes until Tuesday next week (June 17), citing safety concerns. The roof collapsed early morning yesterday (June 10), before the school gates were opened. As a result, no one was injured. According to a report obtained from the school, it was a 'stroke of luck' that the school's security guard had not yet opened the gates. He was unwell and had been delayed, preventing the learners from entering the premises before the structure gave way. Also read: Gqom Gang crowned regional league champions Parents and community members gathered at the school today for an emergency meeting to discuss the damage and the way forward. The school has issued an appeal to the community to help clear the collapsed roof and debris as they prepare for the safe return of learners next week. Learners whose classrooms were affected will be accommodated in other blocks while repairs are underway. Government mobilises after deadly Eastern Cape floods
President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that authorities at all levels are responding to the devastating effects of recent storms that battered parts of South Africa, particularly the Eastern Cape. The severe weather displaced residents, damaged infrastructure, and left at least nine people dead. On Tuesday, heavy rainfall submerged homes and swept away roads in several parts of the Eastern Cape. In Mthatha's Decoligny Village, eight bodies were discovered following flash floods. Another fatality was reported near the Bedlana River in Tsolo. Tragedy struck again when schoolchildren travelling near Mthatha were caught in rising floodwaters. While three were rescued, several others remain missing. 'The president says these incidents and others that may unfold during winter highlight the need for South Africans to display caution, care and cooperation,' said Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya. Ramaphosa has assured citizens that local, provincial, and national governments and the National Disaster Management Centre prioritise relief efforts. Emergency services assist displaced residents, assess road damage, and coordinate rescue operations in affected communities. 'Residents, businesses, infrastructure, livestock and wildlife in various provinces are currently affected by the annual, seasonal impacts of winter conditions,' Magwenya stated. 'Some of these impacts have claimed lives and remain life-threatening and harmful to businesses and the livelihoods of workers.' Ramaphosa acknowledged the joint efforts by government entities, NGOs, and community organisations to bring relief. 'The devastation that comes with nature's forces demands that we work together as best we can to bring relief to families and communities who need this the most,' Magwenya said. The presidency urged citizens to take extra care on roads, remain alert near flood-prone areas, and support distressed neighbours. Magwenya stressed the importance of adhering to local bylaws and safety regulations during extreme weather events. 'This is a time where we need to take care of ourselves in our homes and reach out to neighbours and friends who need help of any kind,' he said. 'We must put problem-solving and collaboration ahead of blame and conflict.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
