Brecon Mountain Railway celebrating 45-year milestone

THIS summer, the Brecon Mountain Railway invites visitors of all ages to celebrate a milestone: 45 years since its inaugural passenger service, on June 8, 1980.
That day, founder Tony Hills brought his dream to life by guiding the first train through the foothills of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), launching a legacy of heritage steam that continues to captivate rail enthusiasts and families alike.
On Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, the railway will host a special anniversary event, offering guests the chance to experience the line in spectacular style.
For the first time in its history, the two Baldwin steam locomotives will double-head passenger trains, filling the air with the twin whistles and billowing plumes of coal-fired power.
Adding to the weekend's unique attractions, the charming quarry Hunslet 'Margaret', from the Vale of Rheidol Railway, will arrive in steam, giving visitors the opportunity to take part in yard driving experiences under expert supervision.
Alongside the mainline action, a series of behind-the-scenes activities will open up the railway's workshops.
Guided tours will reveal the progress on the new-build Forney locomotive, an ambitious project that connects today's engineers with the skills and traditions of classic steam construction.
Enthusiasts will also have the chance to inspect the TU7 diesel locomotive, highlighting the railway's diverse roster, and welcome back 'Pendyffryn', the restored De Winton vertical boiler engine that Tony Hills himself returned to steam.
'Reaching 45 years is a testament to the passion and dedication of Tony and his initial teams of volunteers and staff,' said Stuart Williams, general manager of the Brecon Mountain Railway.
'This event is about honouring our past and sharing the wonder of steam with a new generation.'
Throughout the weekend, the station café and picnic areas will serve locally sourced refreshments, ensuring there's something to delight every taste.
Children can learn about what makes a steam locomotive function, while seasoned visitors can photograph locomotives against the backdrop of the national park's rolling hills.
Tickets for the anniversary weekend are on sale now at www.bmr.wales, with no premium pricing applied. Further details on the driving experiences, special activities and timetable enhancements are available on the website.
