Section V alums power Nazareth women's basketball to playoff win
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) — The Nazareth women's basketball team opened the Empire 8 playoffs with a resounding 71-48 victory over Russell Sage.
Trailing 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Golden Flyers found their offensive rhythm in the second. After shooting just 5 for 16 in the first quarter, 17 of their 29 attempts in the second and third quarters for a 58% shooting percentage.
Nazareth led 36-27 after the first half, then pulled away further in the second half to secure the win. Nazareth was seeded 4th in the E8 playoffs, with Sage 5th.
Webster Thomas alum Madalyn Kelly led the Golden Flyers with a game-high 18 points. She shot 8 for 11 from the field, going 2 for 3 from three-point range.
Avon native Sarina McDowell had 14 points and five rebounds. Molly Benetti and Katie MacLachlan also had 14 points. Brighton's Kiara Anglin had seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Penfield alum Leah Fusilli grabbed 10 rebounds and tallied four points.
Nazareth will play SUNY Brockport in the Empire 8 semifinals. Brockport beat Elmira 101-62 in their quarterfinal game. The other semifinal game will also feature two local teams, with SUNY Geneseo defeating Alfred 68-43 and St. John Fisher topping Houghton 72-55. Both women's semifinal games will be played on Wednesday, February 26th.
On the men's side, SUNY Brockport and Nazareth both advanced to the Empire 8 semifinals. Brockport beat Geneseo 87-66 while Nazareth took down Russell Sage 73-65

What accomplishments are you most proud of and why? I am most proud of earning a presidential scholarship to Lycoming because it displays the hard work I have done through the years. I am also proud of winning the first ever girls basketball district championship at Williams Valley because my team made history. What were your most rewarding school or community activities? My most rewarding school activity is being a part of the Teacher Intern Program. Through this program I attend the elementary school everyday to help teachers with grading and other things and help students with their learning. Iowa basketball announces class of 2025 guard signing Iowa basketball announced the signing of Oklahoma guard Tate Sage on Thursday. The 6-foot-7, 200-pound guard hails from Weatherford, Oklahoma, and represents the Hawkeyes' second high school signing in the 2025 class under first-year head coach Ben McCollum. 'Tate is exactly what we need for the future of Iowa basketball,' McCollum said. 'He's 6-foot-7, 6-8, can shoot, drive, do a variety of things and guard multiple positions. He is also a winner. We're excited to have Tate be a Hawkeye.' Sage announced his commitment to Iowa on April 30, following coach McCollum over to Iowa after initially signing with Drake. The Sooner State product averaged 13.1 points per game as he helped lead Weatherford to the 2025 Class 4A state championship in Oklahoma. Sage earned Oklahoma Coaches Association Large West All-State recognition and was named to The Oklahoman's Class 4A All-State team. During Sage's Weatherford career, the Eagles made four straight state tournament appearances, including four state semifinal trips, three trips to the state championship game and a pair of state runner-up finishes in addition to their 2025 state championship. Sage averaged 11 points, 4.4 rebounds and four assists per game as a junior. His twin brother, Ethan, is committed to play basketball at Pittsburgh State in Kansas. Sage joins center Trevin Jirak of Valley High School in West Des Moines as one of Iowa's high school signees. Jirak averaged 16.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 59.2% from the field, 38.6% from 3-point range, and 71.2% from the free-throw line during his senior season. That duo joins forward Cooper Koch and Jacob Koch, Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks and Cam Manyawu, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen and Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras among the Hawkeyes' current 11. UIL State Tennis: Which Texas Panhandle tennis players are heading to San Antonio?
The UIL Tennis State Tournament will kick off later this week with a number of athletes from the Texas Panhandle set to compete for state titles. A handful of schools saw multiple competitors qualify after solid performances at their regional tennis tournaments; including Booker, Nazareth, Randall, Canyon and Amarillo High. The state tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday from multiple locations in the San Antonio area. Advertisement Class 1A and 2A will play at the Blossom Tennis Center, Class 3A and 4A will compete at the Annemarie Tennis Center and Class 5A and 6A are set for the Northside Tennis Center. The event will host boys and girls singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles brackets, starting with a Round of 16 before eventually crowning the state champion after four rounds. The top performers from regional tournaments earned byes and won't have to compete in the Round of 16, instead meeting the winner of a first-round matchup in the quarterfinals.
