Independent17-02-2025

Francisca Viveros Barradas, the beloved Mexican singer known by her stage name Paquita la del Barrio, has died. She was 77.
The Veracruz -born singer was known for speaking out against macho culture in songs like 'Rata de dos patas' ('Two-legged Rat').
Her death was announced in a statement posted on her official social media accounts.
'With deep pain and sadness, we sensitively confirm the death of our 'Paquita la del Barrio' in her home in Veracruz. She was a unique and irreplaceable artist who left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew her and enjoyed her music," read the statement, which has been translated from Spanish.
"At this time of great pain, we respectfully ask all media outlets and the public to give us space and understanding so that her family can grieve in privacy and peace. We appreciate your support and respect during this difficult time. May she rest in peace. Her music and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.'
No cause of death has yet been announced.
Barradas was born in Alto Lucero, Veracruz on April 2, 1947. She began singing from an early age, and while still a teenager she met and married her first husband, Miguel Gerardo Martínez. He was 18 years her senior, and it later emerged he was already married and had another family.
In the 1970s she formed the duo Las Golondrinas with her sister Viola, and in 1979, at the age of 32, she moved to Mexico City to further pursue her musical dreams. There she performed at La Fogata Norteña, where she met her second husband Alfonso Martínez. They remained together until his death in 2001.
Barradas became very popular as a singer of bolero songs. Her stage name, which she adopted in 1984 for her album El Barrio de los Faroles, means 'Paquita from the neighborhood'. She was also known as "the Queen of the People" and "the warrior of Bolero". Her songs, such as 'Tres Veces te Engañé' ('Three Times I Cheated on You'), often railed against a culture of aggressive machismo.
In 2021, she ran for political office in the state of Veracruz as a candidate for the Citizen Movement Party (Movimiento Ciudadano). That same year she was awarded the Billboard Artistic Career Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony.
In 2022, she was hospitalized with a pulmonary thrombosis, which affected her ability to walk and led to her limiting her public performances. She gave her last concert at the Palenque de Texcoco on April 1, 2023.

‘Who did it better me or Trent?' – Scotland star asks fans to rate his Spanish as he upstages new Real Madrid superstar

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FORMER Scotland star aimed a cheeky comment in response to Trent Alexander-Arnold after he surprised fans by speaking Spanish in his first Real Madrid press conference. The former Liverpool right-back addressed supporters fluently in their native tongue during his official unveiling in Madrid yesterday. Alexander-Arnold only decided his next move in March, but the revelation left many Liverpool fans wondering if he's been eyeing a switch to Spain for some time. Others were just impressed by his knowledge of the language without even living there. Ex-Scotland striker Oli McBurnie, however, couldn't help but share his own talents after being made aware of the right-back's first media address in Spain. He shared a video highlighting his own Spanish skills on social media, asking fans if he's mastered the language better than Alexander Arnold. McBurnie moved to the country last summer when he joined Las Palmas on a free transfer and has been fluent in Spanish for some time. A clip of him answering interview questions in Spanish resurfaced after the new Real Madrid signing's surprise press conference. He shared the impressive video with the caption: "Who did it better me or Trent?" His followers were certainly impressed as many replied saying he did in fact have the edge over the former Liverpool man - despite them not being able to actually understand what's been said. Others, however, poked fun at the striker's accent in the video. 'This is so impressive' - Fans amazed as Oli McBurnie speaks in flawless Spanish just months after joining LaLiga One fan joked: "The fact that you did it after having inhaled helium makes yours more impressive." That comment was met with a number of laughing emojis from McBurnie himself. While another added: "Nailed the accent." McBurnie only netted three goals in La Liga last season, but he did register an assist in his first game against Real Madrid last August as Las Palmas held the giants to a 1-1 draw. But the former Sheffield United hitman won't have the chance to go head-to-head with Alexander-Arnold in the league next season after his team suffered relegation, finishing 19th in La Liga. Inside the retro and unique Scottish house that's on sale for offers over £900,000

This unique property in Edinburgh's Barnton Gardens is guaranteed to give you an instant earworm involving a certain song by the Eagles. And, indeed, The Hacienda is a lovely place, with its SoCal vibes that make Scotland seem just a few degrees warmer. This 2580 square foot three-bedroom property was designed in 1980, and has real California soul, with a spiral staircase, a Mexican tiled kitchen island, open plan living spaces and a lush garden that has direct access to the 18th tee of The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society. It's also spread across two floors, or three if you count the large floored attic. If this sounds like your style, the house is now on the market, via estate agent The Modern House, at offers over £900,000. We asked long-term resident Christine Gupta, who owns the property with her husband, Ash, to tell us more about her retro and very cool home. Why are you moving on? We're both getting older so it's time for us to do a bit of downsizing. Tell us more about the building and its design? It was built in 1980 to a design by architect Gareth Hutchison and developer Derek Edgar who had lived for some years in San Diego and brought the SoCal influence to the building's aesthetic, so that was its inspiration. We bought it in 1984 having fallen in love with it at first glance and have been very happy here ever since. The interior looks like the inside of a shell. Was that their inspiration? The aesthetic has a specific design purpose. The whole house was ahead of its time as it is actually a thermally efficient heat pump. The open plan allows the warmth to flow and radiate throughout the structure. It's very Seventies inside, is that an era that you love? Yes, some of the features remind people of the houses in Seventies films like Dr No – the open fires, the spiral staircase, the split-level open space and the cocktail bar. The free-flowing layout makes it a very social space. Your artworks really complement the space, where did you find the paintings? The majority of the work is mine. I started painting in 2014 and now have my work in private collections around the world. You can see more at . The tapestries came from a tiny specialist shop in Fulham that sold Peruvian hangings and they fitted in perfectly with the feel of the house. Which are your favourite spaces? The kitchen is a favourite as it's the heart of the house and people often say they feel like they're on holiday when they first walk into it. The open plan living area is wonderful for entertaining and enjoys light from three sides with beautiful views to the natural planting of the garden. The best room has to be the master bedroom with its sunny aspect and spacious calmness. It also has a large and very restful en suite bathroom/shower room with views to gardens on both sides. What have been your happiest times in the house? We have always enjoyed entertaining friends and family for parties and legendary barbecues. Some of our parties have featured live bands, but the location means that the neighbours are not disturbed – and they're usually invited anyway! We've also had many happy times in the garden which is very sheltered and we've even found ourselves eating al fresco as early as February. Is it important that the new owner preserves some of the original internal designs, or do you hope that they will? We hardly changed a thing when we first moved in and have not felt the need to impose our own design on the house other than to make it a showcase for my own art. We would hope that the new owners enjoy the open plan flow of the house as much as we have. What's the area like to live in? The area is wonderful with plenty of convenient local amenities and a supportive neighbourhood group. There are fabulous walks to Cramond or in the grounds of Lauriston Castle with its Japanese garden, which is just across the road from us. The house backs on to the 18th hole of the Bruntsfield Golfing Society, one of the oldest clubs in the world, and Barnton Tennis Club is just a few minutes' walk away. You can get to the city centre by the number 47 bus almost from our door and there are essential resources like a supermarket, doctors and dentists also within walking distance. What have you done to the garden and what's growing out there? We've made the garden into a wildlife haven which often gets visits from deer, pheasants and foxes. Rhododendrons, cherry trees, hydrangeas and ferns all thrive and are easy maintenance. There are three lawn areas, one immediately adjacent to the golf club, which makes a great spot to enjoy the evening sun with a glass in hand. What are the best views from the house? The view from the master bedroom over the garden is always a joy and is not overlooked by anyone else. There is also a wonderful view through the woods to the Firth of Forth. The woods were planted for us by the golf course and became recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty. This means that no one can build there and destroy the view. Liverpool stars make feelings clear on Alexander-Arnold after Madrid unveiling

Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled as Real Madrid's newest player on Thursday, though the right-back raised eyebrows back at his former club Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold's former Liverpool team-mates appear to approve of his move to Real Madrid. The England international has decided to head to the Bernabeu on a free transfer from the Reds. Alexander-Arnold's decision drew intense criticism from Liverpool fans and he was booed in his final few games for the club. Madrid have paid a £10million fee in order to have Alexander-Arnold released from his contract early. ‌ That means he will be able to feature in their Club World Cup campaign. The right-back was officially unveiled by the La Liga giants on Thursday, taking to the podium to speak in fluent Spanish. ‌ His ability to speak the language of his new country raised eyebrows among Reds fans. Alexander-Arnold was joined at the announcement by members of his family, as well as Madrid's top brass. They are not the only ones supporting his decision to leave his boyhood team for pastures new though. Alexander-Arnold celebrated his unveiling at Madrid by posting an image on Instagram of himself and his family while wearing his new club's kit. The caption on the post read: "Family is everything." Alexander-Arnold received overwhelming support from his former team-mates at Anfield following the post. It received more than 1.8 million likes on Instagram, including from current Liverpool stars including Federico Chiesa, Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Diaz and Tyler Morton. Former Reds stars Roberto Firmino, Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana also liked the post by Alexander-Arnold. He was also welcomed by his new team-mates, with Jude Bellingham leaving a white love heart emoji as his comment on the post. ‌ Alexander-Arnold is looking forward to starting the next chapter of his career. He said at his announcement: 'It wasn't a question of whether to go or not. I always knew that if I ever left Liverpool, it would be to join Real Madrid. "There came a time when I had to decide whether to leave or stay, and it wasn't easy. I'd been there for so long that it wasn't easy. There comes a time when you have to make a decision, and for me, this was the right one. 'I was there for so long. The club gave me the opportunity to achieve all my dreams. I'm grateful to them and will always be with them. Having achieved everything I've accomplished at my age, I'm ready to move on. ‌ "This opportunity came along and I took it. I think it's a good decision. I've been lucky to play for the biggest team in England and now I'm at the biggest in Spain. Both have won many trophies and dominated their leagues. It's an honour to represent both of them. "At both clubs, you're expected to win and perform well; there are many similarities. At Liverpool, you were expected to win trophies and it's the same here. That's what's demanded of you. The fans are used to it and we have to deliver."
