Golden Agri-Resources Q1 profit rises 47% to US$55 million on better plantation output

Business Times15-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) reported net profit of US$55 million for the first quarter ended Mar 31, up 47 per cent from US$37 million in the previous corresponding period. This was mostly driven by stronger plantation output and an appreciation in the price of crude palm oil, the company said on Thursday (May 15).
Revenue rose 19 per cent to US$3 billion, up from US$2.6 billion in the year-ago period. This rise in revenue was driven by an increase in crude palm oil market prices of 27 per cent from the previous corresponding period, averaging US$1,156 per tonne in the quarter.
This appreciation offset a fall in downstream sales volume, the company said, reporting a 5 per cent drop in year-on-year sales to 2.8 million metric tonnes in the quarter, down from 2.9 million metric tonnes. This was in line with slowing global economic conditions, GAR noted.
Operational performance in upstream palm oil product output grew 11 per cent to 658 million metric tonnes from 590 million metric tonnes in the same period the year before. Fruit yield for the quarter climbed 12 per cent to 4.35 tonnes per hectare as the impact of El Nino lessened.
GAR's planted area totalled about 534,000 hectares, of which about 499,000 hectares are mature. The total area consisted of 417,000 hectares of nucleus estates and 117,000 hectares of plasma estates.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation for the quarter grew 12 per cent to US$259 million, up from US$231 million the previous year. Meanwhile, the company reported foreign exchange losses of US$7 million, down 70 per cent from the US$22 million loss in Q1 2024.
GAR said palm oil production in early 2025 experienced a recovery due to previous weather-related disruptions subsiding. Yet, the company said it expected geopolitical volatility and shifting weather patterns to continue to drag on growth prospects in soft commodities. Along with narrowing price premiums for the commodity, GAR expected these factors to support crude palm oil prices in the near term.
Shares of GAR closed flat at S$0.245 on Wednesday.

Earthquake worsens Myanmar's economic decline, World Bank says

The World Bank said direct damages to property and infrastructure from the earthquake were estimated at US$11 billion (S$14.10 billion), or 14 per cent of the nation's GDP. PHOTO: AFP BANGKOK - Myanmar's beleaguered economy is expected to contract by 2.5 per cent in the 2025/26 fiscal year, largely due to the devastating impact of a powerful earthquake in late March, the World Bank said in a report on June 12. The World Bank said direct damages to property and infrastructure from the 7.7 magnitude quake were estimated at US$11 billion (S$14.10 billion), or 14 per cent of the nation's gross domestic product, estimating that economic output would be about US$2 billion lower than it otherwise would have been because of the quake. The quake affected more than 17 million people, with nine million severely impacted, the World Bank said. The death toll has topped 3,700, according to Myanmar's ruling junta. 'The earthquake caused significant loss of life and displacement, while exacerbating already difficult economic conditions, further testing the resilience of Myanmar's people,' Ms Melinda Good, Division Director for Thailand and Myanmar, said in a statement. 'Recovery efforts are essential to help the most vulnerable populations.' A junta spokesman did not respond to a call from Reuters seeking comment on the report. In December, the World Bank had projected Myanmar's economy would shrink 1 per cent in the 2024/25 fiscal year that ended in March due to the severe flooding in the country. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021, sparking a civil war. There have been international efforts to stall the conflict, but rebels have accused the junta of breaching a ceasefire called to allow relief efforts to reach earthquake-affected areas. The hardest-hit regions of Mandalay and Naypyidaw were expected to lose up to one-third of their production between April and September before a partial recovery in the second half of the fiscal year, the World Bank said. The earthquake could increase the national poverty rate by 2.8 percentage points, pushing more households into poverty, the report stated. A survey before the quake estimated the poverty rate at 31 per cent in 2024. 'Myanmar's compounding crises have put household coping mechanisms under severe stress,' said Ms Kim Edwards, Senior Economist and Program Leader for Thailand and Myanmar. DayOne gets $4.6 billion funding for Johor data centres

A DayOne data centre in Johor. The state has about 30 data centre projects completed or under construction, plus 20 more awaiting approvals. PHOTO: DAYONE Kuala Lumpur – DayOne Data Centers Singapore secured RM15 billion ($3.6 billion) of multicurrency financing to support its green data centers in Malaysia's Johor state, OCBC said. OCBC and its Malaysian unit OCBC Bank (Malaysia) acted as joint coordinators for the syndicated financing, which comprises a RM7.5 billion Islamic financing and a US$1.7 billion (S$2.2 billion) offshore term-loan facility, the bank said. The proceeds will be used for both refinancing and capital expenditure of DayOne's data centres that are expected to obtain green digital infrastructure certification, it said. DBS Group Holdings said that it was also involved in the syndicated financing, along with United Overseas Bank, CIMB Group Holdings, Malayan Banking, Credit Agricole CIB and Standard Chartered. UOB said the financing was one of the largest in South-east Asia for data centres and the biggest green Islamic syndicated facility in Malaysia. Maybank said it underwrote RM2.5 billion, or the biggest portion, of the Islamic financing tranche for DayOne. DayOne's anchor data centre campuses will be located at Nusajaya and Kempas Tech Parks in Johor, and will be part of investments into the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, it added. Malaysia is turning into a beneficiary of Asia's growing need for data centres to support the boom in artificial intelligence. Johor has about 30 projects completed or under construction, plus 20 more awaiting approvals. Companies investing have included Microsoft and ByteDance. Johor is expected to host 60 per cent of Malaysia's total data centre capacity by 2030, Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz said in a speech delivered at the signing ceremony for the syndicated financing. DayOne, formerly the international arm of China's GDS Holdings, is now an independent group after deconsolidation. The facility, which is its biggest-ever loan, would be among the largest syndicated financings for the sector by a borrower in Asia, Bloomberg News reported. Earlier this month, DBS and UOB jointly arranged a 6.7 trillion rupiah (S$530 million) loan to fund a data center project in Indonesia that DayOne is helping to develop. Grab prices and increases convertible notes offering to US$1.5 billion

[SINGAPORE] Grab announced on Wednesday (Jun 11) that its five-year convertible note offering has been upsized to US$1.5 billion from US$1.25 billion. The initial conversion rate of the notes will be 152.6 Class A ordinary shares for every US$1,000 principal amount equivalent to an initial conversion price of around US$6.55 per Class A ordinary share. This is a premium of about 40 per cent above the closing price of US$4.68 on Tuesday. The proceeds will be used for general corporate purchases, a concurrent repurchase of shares and possible acquisitions. Grab and GoTo were recently rumoured to be in talks to merge before both issued disclosures saying otherwise on Tuesday. Grab plans to repurchase Class A ordinary shares worth about US$273.5 million from certain purchasers of the notes in an off-market transaction for a price of US$4.68 per share – the closing price on Tuesday. This purchase will be made under Grab's US$500 million share buyback programme. The bond will be listed on the Singapore Exchange and will be the largest equity-linked offering. The conversion rate is subject to adjustment. On or after Jun 21, 2028, Grab may redeem all or part of the notes for cash if the last reported Class A ordinary share price has been at least 130 per cent of the conversion price for at least 20 trading days during a 30 consecutive trading-day period. The notes may also be redeemed if less than 10 per cent of the aggregate principal amount of notes originally issued remains outstanding. Noteholders will have the option to require the company to repurchase for cash all or part of their notes at a price equal to the principal amount plus accrued and unpaid interest.
