Rutherglen looks forward to annual Landemer Day celebration

Daily Record2 days ago

As ever, the Landemer Committee have worked tirelessly organising the event.
People will flock to Rutherglen on Saturday for the annual Landemer Day celebrations.
The event will officially open with the crowning of this year's Landemer Queen, Cathkin High pupil Maci Aulds.

And she will be ably assisted by her royal court, who this year will be Rutherglen High's Isla Stewart Lindsay and Brook Wade, Trinity High's Emilia Milne and Rosa Ventre, Stonelaw High's Zowie Docherty and Isla Cassidy, and Cathkin High's Bailey Cooper and Sarah Saiz-Ruiz.

As ever, the Landemer Committee have worked tirelessly organising the event, and there will be a fantastic variety of entertainment, fun and games for the community to enjoy.
Landemer Day chairman Scott Munn said: 'The committee have been working hard.
'We meet formally once a month and spend an evening together, but honestly the team are working constantly, every single day there's stuff happening, a lot of planning. For us this year it's maybe been about making a slight change to how things are done, just to try and modernise things a bit but also respect the traditions of old, it's always been a great day so we're hoping to keep evolving the event as it continues to go on.'

He added: 'We've got the more traditional part of the day, in terms of the ceremony. A lot of the locals are keen to suggest that it goes back to the park and it goes back to the days of old when it used to be floats and a proper parade.
'But the problem we've got with that is obviously health and safety, the red tape, the logistics, it's not something that's possible any more unfortunately.

'So I suppose what we're trying to do is make a nod to the traditions of old and respect those but at the same time allow the day and the event to change with the times and change with people's expectations as well.
'That's been important to us, but also difficult to find the balance between what we can and can't do.
'We get a grant from South Lanarkshire Council, but a lot of it is self-funded.

'Myself and particularly the rest of the team, they do a lot more than me, they give up a lot of their time in the week to do it, so it's difficult to organise it but we're hoping for good weather and plenty of fun for the families.
'We've got the funfair coming, shows, stalls and different things like that, and of course the traditional ceremony and also some live entertainment as well with some local singers and different things like that.
'We're trying to keep it all local as well in terms of the local people and people that are connected to the community of Rutherglen.

'But, yeah, a nice relaxed day, a good balance of the formal part of the service, and dealing with that side of things, and then plenty of fun for everyone to enjoy regardless of what age.'
The crowning ceremony will take place at 11.30am, but there will be things on for people to enjoy from 10.30am to 4pm.
Scott continued: 'Everything is on all day, not everyone wants to come and see the formal part, some people like to come and do the other bits and bobs, they've got the option to do whatever they please and there's plenty of stalls, we've also got a street market coming as well.

'We're looking for as much support form the community as possible, and also going forward we're looking for ideas, more of what people would like to see, as the event goes on.
'It's just kind of been, not through any fault of its own, but the event has just been the event, it's always been the same things that have been done, but obviously now in the more modern world that we live in, people's expectations of these sort of events are slightly different, so as much input and support from the local community, that's what we're asking, pop down even if it's just for an hour for a bit of fun.'
And Scott, of Scott Munn Funeral Directors, added: 'I had supported the event last year and was asked to become chair.

' My business is on the main street as well, and we've got strong connections to the community, have had for a number of years, so for me I suppose it's just another extension of us being able to give back to the community, because that was our thing when we set the business up, just having that ethos of supporting people locally, so hence my involvement in it.'

Netflix users slam new update

Published: | Updated: Netflix users around the world are lashing out over a new update that many say has ruined their viewing experience. The streaming giant, which boasts over 300 million subscribers , has rolled out a redesigned user interface (UI) to deliver better recommendations and a more personalized experience. However, the update has triggered a wave of frustration, with some subscribers calling it 'diabolical.' 'Netflix has destroyed the app. Worst UI redesign ever. Everyone needs to cancel,' one user posted on X. Users are now presented with enlarged title cards, the rectangular graphics that preview shows and movies, which they said takes up more screen space and reduces the number of titles visible at once. Previously, users could scroll through multiple rows of compact tiles. The 'clunky' title boxes have also taken the place of key features that users said helped them find movies and shows easily. 'Netflix's update is diabolical. Where the hell is the 'Coming Soon' section?!' another frustrated user shared on X. Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone emphasized the company's focus on merging technology with entertainment, calling it Netflix's 'superpower' that improves user connection with shows and movies. The streaming giant believes the new experience will save users from overwhelming situations, like choosing what to watch, by providing tailor-made suggestions for them. In the previous version, shortcuts like Search and My List were located on the left side. Now, shortcuts to Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix are located at the top of your screen and always visible. The revamped homepage introduces multiple rows of content that update based on a user's viewing habits. For instance, someone watching a romantic comedy may suddenly see an entire section dedicated to similar films. 'The new Netflix TV experience is still the one you know and love, just better,' Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim said. Despite the company's promises, many users are taking to social media to complain that the update has worsened their viewing experience. 'Whoever's job it was to update Netflix UI, I'm praying for a resignation in the coming weeks. IT LOOKS TERRIBLE,' an X user shared. On Reddit, where user experience discussions often gain traction, subscribers echoed the frustration. One described the update as 'so dire' they were considering canceling their subscription. Another added: 'It was so slick and easy to use before. Now it's so clunky.' Some subscribers have even launched a petition urging Netflix to revert the layout, arguing that the new interface shows only three to four titles per screen, which is a drastic drop from the 20 or more shown previously. While users are outraged, Netflix stands by the design that it said will better accommodate its growing library of movies, TV shows and games. The platform also plans to add generative AI-powered search features, beginning with a beta rollout on iOS. The new AI-powered search tool will let users find content using natural language — for example, typing 'I want something funny and upbeat' instead of searching for specific titles. Despite the backlash, Netflix appears committed to the redesign. The company said internal testing showed strong user engagement, suggesting confidence that the interface will grow on subscribers over time. Interestingly, signs of user discontent surfaced months ago. Some began voicing complaints during early beta testing, particularly over the enlarged tiles and the diminished ease of browsing, concerns that have since exploded across social platforms.

TV fans might have no idea they can stream hundreds of shows for free

If you own a Samsung device, you're in luck. Because you'll have access to hundreds of TV shows, channels and movies that others have to pay for on different streaming platforms. Just like other popular free streaming services such as Tubi, Pluto TV and Plex, Samsung TV Plus is an ad-supported app that lets users watch its content library at no extra cost. Not only is it entirely free, but there's no subscription or sign-up required. All users need is an internet connection and a Samsung smart TV made in 2016 or later. The streaming service is also available on Samsung Galaxy mobile devices operating on Android 8.0 or higher. Users don't have to create an account to access Samsung TV Plus, but those who do get additional features such as continue watching, favourite channels, watch reminders and watch lists. It's also possible to remove channels from the app. The streaming service is already integrated into smart TVs, while the app can be downloaded onto mobile devices through the Galaxy Store or Google Play app store. Samsung TV Plus has over 200 channels to choose from, with more content added on a regular basis. This month, two new channels — Antiques Road Trip and Escape to the Country — have been added, offering round-the-clock access to the popular shows. Other channels include British TV classics like Pointless, 8 out of 10 Cats and The Graham Norton Show, while the reality TV offering includes Dragon's Den and Project Runway (currently only available on Hayu), as well as America's Got Talent and American Idol — both of which aren't available to stream anywhere else in the UK. There's plenty of crime, documentary and nature channels, and news channels include Sky News and GB News as well as others from the US and Europe. Sports fans can enjoy Sky Sports (usually only available with a Sky or Now TV subscription), talkSport, FIFA+ and more. And Samsung TV Plus keeps its content fresh by adding new shows and movies to mark special events. For Pride Month, documentary City of Queens has arrived on the service, exploring the unfiltered stories of drag performers, along with the ITV comedy Vicious, starring Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. In film, new additions include survival thrillers and dystopian dramas (perfect for those missing The Last of Us), including Cell, Man Down and The Recall — all three of which are currently only available to rent on Apple TV Plus elsewhere. Hacksaw Ridge, The Intern, A Simple Favour, The Big Short and Love, Simon are also all new on Samsung TV Plus this month. On Reddit, users have praised Samsung TV Plus for its variety, with one calling it 'better than cable'. Apoarenas0204 said: 'I like it. It's free and has so many channels listed to choose from, movies, music, cooking, travel, weather, etc, etc. It has practically everything. Stingray is my favourite.' Wegotthisonekidmongo added: 'I literally use it everyday, it's the best thing. It's even better than cable TV in my opinion, with more variety. Definitely worth every penny to buy the TV for.' And Kiki_Kazumi said: 'I love it for my toddler. There are a bunch of channels specifically geared towards tots! The only issue is he's so used to watching on streaming devices like Netflix that he isn't used to commercial breaks and starts to fuss sometimes.' Others praised the service as perfect for background TV. Drv687 revealed: 'I like it for background noise/something to be on when I can't think of anything else,' and kjtstl echoed, 'I like having the TV on low in the background and I love that I can just throw it on American Pickers channel or whatever I feel like watching'. More Trending Another user said: 'The Bob Ross channel is my constant background'. But if you don't have a Samsung device, there's little reason to feel left out, as many users have compared Samsung TV Plus to other free streaming services like Tubi and Pluto TV, which can be accessed with other brands of smart TV. Handymanct explained: 'Samsung TV Plus is not exactly like regular TV. It is very much like Pluto TV, Tubi TV, and Plex TV,' and Boz6 added, 'It's simply a service similar to Pluto, Tubi, Plex, etc.' View More » Another user said Samsung TV Plus is 'not a real Pluto TV or Tubi contender'. How to Easily Switch from Apple Music to Spotify

If you are an Apple Music user, making the transition to Spotify represents a meaningful shift in how you experience music streaming. This change highlights the distinct differences between the two platforms, particularly in areas such as music discovery, device compatibility, social features, interface design, library management, audio quality, and subscription pricing. By examining these aspects, you can decide whether Spotify better aligns with your music streaming needs and preferences. Watch this video on YouTube. Music Discovery: Spotify's Algorithms Take the Lead Spotify's music discovery capabilities are driven by sophisticated algorithms that provide a highly personalized listening experience. Features like 'Discover Weekly' and 'Release Radar' analyze your listening habits to recommend songs and artists tailored to your tastes. These tools allow Spotify to consistently introduce you to new music that aligns with your preferences. While Apple Music also offers recommendations, its approach relies more heavily on editorial curation, which may feel less dynamic and personalized. If discovering new music is a priority, Spotify's data-driven system offers a more engaging and innovative way to explore fresh sounds. Cross-Platform Compatibility: Access Anywhere, Anytime Spotify excels in cross-platform compatibility, making sure seamless functionality across a wide array of devices. Whether you're using an Android phone, a Windows PC, a smart TV, or even a gaming console, Spotify provides consistent performance. This versatility makes it easy to access your music wherever you are. In contrast, Apple Music is optimized for Apple's ecosystem, which can limit its usability on non-Apple devices. If you frequently switch between platforms or use a variety of devices, Spotify's adaptability ensures a smoother and more convenient experience. Social Sharing: Connecting Through Music Spotify's social features are designed to enhance collaboration and connection through music. You can create collaborative playlists with friends, share songs directly to social media, and follow other users to explore their listening habits. These features make it easy to engage with others and discover music through shared experiences. Apple Music, on the other hand, offers limited social functionality, focusing more on artist-driven content rather than user interaction. If you enjoy sharing music and connecting with others, Spotify's robust social tools provide a richer and more interactive platform for musical engagement. Interface Design: Simplicity Meets Functionality Spotify's interface is known for its streamlined and user-friendly design, which prioritizes functionality and ease of use. Navigating playlists, discovering new music, and managing your library are intuitive processes, thanks to its clean and organized layout. Apple Music, while visually appealing, can feel cluttered due to overlapping features like 'For You' and 'Browse.' If you value a straightforward and accessible interface, Spotify's design ensures a smoother and more enjoyable user experience. Library Management: Flexible and Organized Spotify offers flexible tools for managing your music library, allowing you to create folders, reorder tracks, and share playlists effortlessly. These features make organizing your music simple and efficient. While Apple Music provides similar options, it lacks the same level of customization and ease of use. For users who prioritize efficient library management, Spotify's tools offer a more practical and user-friendly solution. Streaming Quality: Balancing Quality and Features Both platforms deliver high-quality audio, but their approaches differ. Spotify allows users to adjust streaming quality, with a 'Very High' option available for premium subscribers. This flexibility ensures that you can balance audio quality with data usage based on your needs. Apple Music, however, offers lossless audio and spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, providing a richer and more immersive listening experience. If audio quality is your top priority, Apple Music's advanced features may appeal to you. However, Spotify's quality settings are sufficient for most listeners and offer the added benefit of adaptability. Subscription Pricing: Flexibility and Value Spotify and Apple Music both offer a range of subscription plans, including individual, family, and student options. However, Spotify stands out with its free, ad-supported tier, which allows you to explore the platform without committing to a paid plan. This option provides a cost-effective way to experience Spotify's features before deciding on a subscription. Apple Music, by contrast, requires a subscription to access its full library, offering no comparable free tier. If cost is a significant factor in your decision, Spotify's free option and flexible pricing structure provide greater value and accessibility. Why Spotify May Be the Better Choice Switching from Apple Music to Spotify after 10 years highlights the unique strengths of each platform. Spotify excels in areas such as music discovery, cross-platform compatibility, social sharing, and interface design, making it a versatile and user-friendly option. While Apple Music offers advantages like lossless audio and seamless integration within Apple's ecosystem, Spotify's adaptability and focus on user experience make it a compelling choice for many. If you're considering a change, Spotify's features may provide a fresh and engaging way to enjoy your music while offering greater flexibility and convenience.
