FIFA will test body cameras for referees and advanced offside detection at the Club World Cup in the USA.
FIFA Club World Cup (X)
FIFA announced on Friday that referees equipped with body cameras and an enhanced offside detection system will be key innovations at this year's Club World Cup in the United States.
For the first time in a FIFA tournament, match officials will wear body cameras, with selected footage broadcast live to audiences.
A new, advanced version of semi-automated offside technology, combining artificial intelligence, multiple cameras, and ball sensors, will be used to expedite decision-making, while maintaining VAR oversight for close calls. FIFA stated, 'However, for challenging offside scenarios, the video assistant referee will still validate the information provided by the system before a decision is made."
According to the governing body, the tournament, expanding to 32 teams this year, will serve as a significant testing ground for both systems.
Representatives from each of the six continental confederations will participate: AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), Concacaf (North, Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (Europe).
The first edition of FIFA's new premier club competition, the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, will be hosted in the USA from 14 June to 13 July 2025.

Cristiano Ronaldo confirms he will not be playing at FIFA Club World Cup: 'You can't take part in everything'

Ronaldo was expected to part ways with Al-Nassr and join one of the clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup, including Saudi club Al-Hilal. The Portugal star, however, confirmed on Saturday that while he did receive 'quite a few invitations', he chose not to accept any of them. read more Cristiano Ronaldo at a training session ahead of the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich. AP The drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's participation at the FIFA Club World Cup has come to an end with the Portuguese superstar ruling himself out of the 32-team tournament that gets underway in a week's time. Ronaldo, whose future at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr also remains a matter of conjecture, added that he has received 'quite a few' offers from clubs that will be in action at the Club World Cup but has decided against accepting any of them. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The move comes as a major blow to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who was hopeful of having both Ronaldo and arch-rival Lionel Messi in action together to further boost the tournament's popularity. Messi's club Inter Miami qualified for the tournament by getting the host nation slot. More from Football 'Some things make sense to talk about, other things don't, and, as a person says, you can't take part in everything. You have to think about the short, medium and long term. 'It's a decision practically made on my part not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had quite a few invitations to go,' Ronaldo told reporters in Munich on the eve of the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain. Ronaldo's exit a major setback for FIFA Infantino had suggested last month that Ronaldo, who is still contracted to Saudi team Al-Nassr until the end of June, could switch to one of the 32 clubs taking part in the Club World Cup because of a unique transfer window created for the tournament. Ronaldo did little to quell that speculation when he posted ' this chapter is over ' after Al-Nassr's last Saudi Pro League game of the season. He was linked with several Club World Cup participants, including Brazil's Palmeiras. A switch to Al-Nassr's crosstown rival Al-Hilal – the one Saudi club that qualified – was also mooted as a potential solution to having Ronaldo play at the tournament, where his great rival Lionel Messi will be playing with Inter Miami. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD FIFA would have welcomed the boost that Ronaldo's presence could provide for ticket sales, though such a switch to a bitter local rival for a short period would be unthinkable for players in Europe's leagues. Both Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are among the four big Saudi clubs backed by the country's Public Investment Fund, which has a 75 per cent stake in each. On Thursday, FIFA announced PIF as an ' official partner ' of the Club World Cup. Saudi state money is also effectively funding the tournament's broadcasting deal that has largely backed its $1 billion prize fund being shared among the participants. 'This is irrelevant right now,' Ronaldo first said when asked Saturday about the Club World Cup. 'It makes no sense to talk about anything other than the national team.' Ronaldo fired Portugal into the Nations League final on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over host nation Germany. His winning goal was his record-extending 137th for Portugal. If he plays Sunday he will make his record-extending 221st national team appearance. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With AP inputs

Nations League final more than just Ronaldo vs Yamal, says Cristiano

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo acknowledged he was 'another generation' to Spain starlet Lamine Yamal but said Sunday's Nations League final was more than just a battle between the duo. The final in Munich has been framed as a showdown between veteran Ronaldo, 40, one of the game's biggest names, and 17-year-old Yamal, the most exciting young talent in world football. Ronaldo scored the winner to send Portugal past Germany into the final, and Yamal was named man-of-the-match after bagging a brace in Spain's wild 5-4 semi-final win over France. ALSO READ: Cristiano Ronaldo rules himself out of FIFA Club World Cup, says decision on future 'almost final' Ronaldo, however, said the focus on the two individuals was overblown, calling Spain 'maybe the best national team in the world'. 'There are different generations, one is coming in, and another is exiting the stage. If you want to see me as another generation, then that's OK. 'When you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that's not how it works. The media always try to hype things up, which is a normal thing, but it's one team versus another team.' 'You've been talking about Lamine a lot, and you're right to do so because he's very good,' Ronaldo told journalists, adding, 'but I'd like to talk about the team. 'They've got Nico Williams, great midfielders like Pedri, and their coach (Luis) de la Fuente is very good, very strong, very disciplined.' 'Funny hair' Portugal last beat its Iberian neighbour in a competitive fixture 21 years ago at Euro 2024, a match which Ronaldo started. Like Yamal, Ronaldo burst onto the scene at a young age. Aged just 18, Ronaldo impressed so much for boyhood side Sporting in a 3-1 win over Manchester United in a friendly in Lisbon that the English club decided to buy him, bringing him to Old Trafford less than a week later. ALSO READ: Ronaldo says Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner' Like a young Ronaldo, Yamal has consistently impressed since bursting onto the scene, winning a league and cup double with Barcelona this season after lifting the Euro 2024 title in Germany last summer. The Portuguese veteran asked the media to allow the teenager to grow and improve without pressure, reminding them the Spanish star 'with funny hair' was just 'three years older than my son'. 'The kid has been doing very well, but what I ask is for you to let him grow, not put him under pressure. For the good of football, we need to let him grow in his own way and enjoy the talent he has.' Both Spain and Portugal have already won the Nations League. Spain is the current champion from its win in 2023, while Portugal won the inaugural tournament back in 2019.
