Eco-Shop launches the year's biggest IPO to date

The Star09-05-2025

PETALING JAYA: Main Market-bound Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd aims to raise RM419.87mil via an initial public offering (IPO), which comprises 347 million new shares at a retail price of RM1.21 apiece.
Slated to debut on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia on May 23, 2025, Eco-Shop is estimated to have a market capitalisation of RM7bil upon listing, making it Malaysia's biggest IPO for this year as of now.
Operating as a dollar chain store, Eco-Shop currently has about 350 stores nationwide and is planning to expand by opening up another 70 stores within one year after listing.
Executive director and chief executive officer Jessica Ng said there are ample opportunities and space to increase the number of outlets in Malaysia.
Despite not disclosing the specific locations for the planned outlets, she said the majority will be in underserved areas in the Klang Valley and states on the east coast.
'In the last 12 months, we focused a lot on Johor to maximise operational efficiency.
'But this year, we would like to open more stores in the Klang Valley.
'So, we hope we can make our presence more visible in the sector,' she explained during a press conference after the launch of Eco-Shop's prospectus here yesterday.
That being said, the group has allocated about 13.4% of the proceeds or RM56.27mil for the expansion of new chain stores.
When asked about the duration to reach breakeven per store, Ng said it would usually take about one year for each store to be profitable.
She stated that the group is looking to enhance its warehouse and distribution capabilities by developing a new semi-automated distribution centre in Klang, Selangor.
Eco-Shop will be acquiring a 307,560 sq- m-freehold medium industrial land for the construction of the distribution centre, with the deal to be financed via IPO proceeds amounting to RM200mil.
'This is in line with the growth in the number of our outlets,' Ng said.
An allocation of RM10.9mil or 2.6% of the proceeds has been put aside as the group also plans to invest in IT hardware and software to further enhance and support daily operations.
The remainder of the proceeds will be used to finance the repayment of bank borrowings, working capital and listing expenses at RM100mil, RM24.7mil and RM28mil, respectively.
On that note, Ng stated that the group remains confident in its future prospects despite the current uncertainties within the global economic landscape.
'The consumer sentiment is definitely shifting and people are more budget-conscious as well. So, Eco-Shop is a brand that really fits into this good value proposition,' she said.
On the trade war between the United States and China, she views it to be more advantageous for the group considering the opportunities presented from China's exports. About half of its products are imported and the remaining half are supplied locally.
Additionally, Ng shared that the group will be expanding its house brands by improving product display and revamping packaging and products as well as product innovation.
'Our house brand represents 70% of our stock keeping units and reflects close to 56% of our sales participation.
'Hence, our house brand plays a very critical role,' she explained, adding that house brands bring in higher margins.
Eco-Shop has 29 house brands as of today.
On top of its public offering, Eco-Shop will offer 675.37 million shares to institutional investors at a price to be determined through a book-building process – of which 10 investors were identified as cornerstone investors who collectively subscribed for 90.91 million shares or 90.31% of the institutional offering.
The cornerstone investors include Aham Asset Management, Albizia Capital Pte Ltd, Areca Capital Sdn Bhd, Eastspring Investments Bhd, Kairous Equity Sdn Bhd, Kenanga Investors Bhd, Kenanga Islamic Investors Bhd, Lion Global Investors Ltd, RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd and RHB Islamic International Asset Management Bhd.
An offer for sale of up to 515.15 million existing shares was also made available.
Applications for the IPO are now open and will close on May 7, 2025 at 5pm.

Surge in foreign tourists visiting S'gor in lead-up to VSY 2025

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. (From left) Saipolyazan, Ng and Chua answering media queries at the festival. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. The festival was launched by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Held from 7am to 7pm over two days, it featured a variety of family-friendly and cultural activities. Among first day highlights were electric tram and rickshaw tours through padi fields, a food festival, traditional kite (wau kapal) demonstrations, a mini kite decoration competition and a live performance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Aizat Amdan. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Samenta heartened by Inland Revenue Board's latest measures on e-invoicing

PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) decision to exempt micro enterprises from e-invoicing and to give small and medium enterprises more time to comply with the mandate is a positive step that will help ease the current difficulties faced by businesses in the country. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) stated that IRB's exemptions are not only timely but also reflect an understanding of the real challenges faced by small businesses on the ground. 'We have provided input on both issues, and we are grateful that the government has shown genuine care and support for our most vulnerable enterprises,' Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said. 'We are especially heartened by the government's decisive move to permanently exempt businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually from the e-invoicing mandate. 'This exemption spares our smallest traders, hawkers and family-run shops, many operating without digital infrastructure, from compliance burdens that could have forced them to shut down or operate informally,' he added. Ng said the postponement of e-invoicing requirements until Jan 1, 2026, for businesses earning below RM5 million a year provides SMEs with much-needed time to prepare, strengthen their skills and adjust to new demands. This flexibility is essential for SMEs to survive and grow in today's changing economic environment, he added. On Thursday, IRB announced that the e-invoicing implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million is postponed to Jan 1, 2026, while those below RM500,000 are exempted, and the deadline for those up to RM1 million is extended to July 1, 2026. The board also set a new e-invoicing implementation timeline: Phase 3 for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM5 million and RM25 million starts on July 1, 2025; Phase 4 for those earning RM1 million to RM5 million begins on Jan 1, 2026; and Phase 5 for taxpayers with income up to RM1 million will commence on July 1, 2026. On the government's decision to postpone the permit requirement for the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas, Ng said: 'In response to the concerns of our street-level food operators, the temporary waiver of liquefied petroleum gas permit requirements will go a long way in safeguarding the daily livelihoods of thousands of families and small traders. It may be a small administrative change, but it carries significant implications for business continuity and the cost of living.' Without these timely measures, he said, Malaysia could have faced the potential collapse of thousands of small businesses, particularly those in the micro and informal sectors. Ng pointed out that the government's proactive stance has averted what could have become a national micro-business crisis. 'More importantly, these decisions send a clear message that the government sees SMEs as a central pillar of our economy and is responsive and willing to amend policies based on feedback from the ground,' he said, adding that Malaysia is a country where small businesses are treated with respect and understanding.

JAG not deterred by plunging into the red, views its 1Q FY2025 setback as 'temporary, one-off impact'

A SLOWDOWN in demand from international clients following uncertainty surrounding the US tariff policy announced in early April has taken a toll on JAG Bhd's financial performance for its 1Q FY2025 ended March 31, 2025. For the quarter under review, the ACE Market-listed total waste management company incurred a net loss of -RM6.43 mil from a net profit of RM3.01 mil in the same period last year. Its revenue dwindled 12% year-on-year (yoy) to RM46.47 mil (1Q FY2024: RM52.75 mil). Amid the lack of clarity, customers took a more cautious approach to procurement which resulted in delayed orders during the period, according to JAG's executive director Datuk Ng Meow Giak. Nevertheless, the group views this as a temporary, one-off impact given market sentiment is already showing signs of stabilisation with semiconductor clients resuming typical procurement patterns. 'While 1Q FY2025 was impacted by external headwinds, we remain confident in our ability to deliver a strong rebound,' opined Ng. 'Management guidance for FY2025 remains strong and intact, and we expect the remaining quarters of the year to return to profitability. 'The long-term outlook for the industries we serve, particularly semiconductors and electronics, remain robust. We are focused on building the operational resilience and business agility needed to fully capitalise on these opportunities.' As it is, JAG's Total Waste Management (TWM) segment has continued to show strength and agility. 'We are broadening our revenue streams within TWM, including entry into the oil & gas (O&G) space and tapping into specialised services such as the disposal of scheduled waste, an area that requires licensed handling and technical expertise,' projected Ng. The TWM segment remains the group's primary growth engine. In addition to streamlining operations and refocusing on high-value activities, JAG is enhancing productivity through processing efficiencies, expansion of service scope and diversification into industries with long-term potential. 'As we enter this next phase of growth, we are also taking steps to enhance shareholder value,' envisages Ng. 'Given the strong fundamentals of our core business and the growth trajectory ahead, we are in the process of formalising a dividend policy. This reflects our confidence in the group's performance outlook and our commitment to delivering long-term value to our shareholders.' At the close of today's (June 4) market trading, JAG was up 1 sen or 4.44% to 23.5 sen with 3.17 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM 177 mil. – June 4, 2025
