Super Rugby Pacific: Blues bomb out against the Reds
The Blues have slumped to a 35-21 loss to the Reds in Brisbane, meaning that they are now in serious danger of missing the Super Rugby Pacific play-offs.
While they were missing Dalton Papli'i and Caleb Clarke, plus had Beauden Barrett sidelined with illness, the Blues can only blame themselves for yet another disappointing performance. Handling errors were rife, the set piece was unreliable and poor defence in the early stages allowed the Reds to shoot out to a 14-0 lead courtesy of two tries to Tom Lynagh.
Kurt Eklund looked to have pulled back a try for the Blues, but was denied by the TMO meaning the Blues were unrewarded for a sustained period of attack in the Reds' 22.
However, the killer blow came after only half an hour when Mark Tele'a needlessly spear tackled his opposite winger Tim Ryan, which resulted in an unsurprising upgraded red card. Tate McDermott, Lachie Anderson and Richie Asiata scored for the home side in the second half to push the game well out of reach, before Sam Nock and Anton Segner scored to add a little bit of respectability to the scoreline for the Blues.
The Blues now have to win their four remaining games - Force (home), Drua (away), Moana (away) and Waratahs (home) - to make the play-offs and defend the title they so convincingly won last season. It's highly likely they'll have to do at least a few of those games without Tele'a, who almost certainly will be facing a suspension.

Crusaders hold off Blues to extend streak in semifinal thriller
They have done it again. The Crusaders have extended their Super Rugby home playoffs record to 31-0 with a thrilling 21-14 victory over the Blues after defending their line for the final five minutes-plus. It means the red and blacks have qualified for a home final next weekend against either the Chiefs or the Brumbies, who will play in Hamilton tomorrow, after scoring 21 unanswered points against a Blues side which got to within a hair's breadth from forcing the match into extra-time tonight. It took a turnover under his own posts from loose forward Christian Lio-Willie to finally seal a victory which was far more hard-fought than the scoreline suggests – the Blues laying siege to the Crusaders line for fully five minutes after the final siren had sounded on a typically cold Christchurch winter's evening. The Crusaders wildly celebrated with relief after Rivez Reihana gratefully kicked the ball out of the stadium to prompt the final whistle. After their terrible blip last year during which they won only four competition games, the Crusaders have qualified for yet another final and on balance it was a deserved victory for a side generally used to winning at this time of year. ADVERTISEMENT On the whole they were the more disciplined side – the Blues losing prop Joshua Fisitua and No.8 Hoskins Sotutu for yellow cards due to high tackles in either half respectively, and, while the Crusaders lost Braydon Ennor to a yellow card due to a high tackle on Sotutu in the first half, the home side were far tidier after the break. Indeed, they may have wondered how the Blues got away with giving up seven penalties in a row without conceding another yellow card after beginning the second half with far more energy and intent than the visitors. It was a different story in the first stanza as the Blues, determined to play no-mistake rugby, kicked often in the hope of forcing mistakes and they generally had the better of the early exchanges, Crusaders halfback Noah Hotham a little nervy early on and veteran hooker Codie Taylor struggling with his handling. The pressure told, with Mark Tele'a doing well to finish a well-worked move in the right corner, the right wing then turning provider from an attacking scrum to put midfielder Rieko Ioane in near the posts for another converted try to put the Crusaders in a hole 14-0. First, flanker Tom Christie went over from close range to narrow the deficit and then prolific fullback Will Jordan scored the first of his two tries – also from close range. ADVERTISEMENT Jordan's try, after he crashed through Patrick Tuipulotu and AJ Lam, prompted a pushing and shoving match between the teams, a contretemps which became a feature of a hard-fought and high-stakes game between two traditional rivals. The Crusaders had by far the better of the second half. They started with energy and determination and we rewarded by Jordan's second try – his 47th in 65 games. The home side enjoyed a territorial and possession advantage and took advantage of hooker Ricky Riccitelli's brief period at loosehead prop due to Fisitua's failed HIA and Jordan Lay's ongoing assessment, but couldn't quite put the visitors away. That failure to put a seal on the match almost came back to haunt the Crusaders, who, while they defended well and had heroes across the park in the form of loosehead prop George Bower, in for the injured Tamaiti Williams, Scott Barrett, skipper David Havili and the energised Jordan, had to dig extremely deep in the finale. Unfortunately for the Blues, led by a slightly wounded Beauden Barrett (shoulder) at the finish, and without the sinbinned Sotutu until the last minute, could not force the extra-time that their coach Vern Cotter had eerily predicted during the week. Crusaders reach final after edging Blues
Will Jordan scored two tries as the Crusaders recovered from an early deficit to edge the reigning champion Blues 21-14 in an intense clash at Christchurch Stadium on Friday and reach a 17th Super Rugby final. The Blues hammered away at the home try line for more than six minutes after the hooter looking for a converted try to force overtime but came away empty-handed as the Crusaders' defence held firm and kept them on track for a 13th title. A try from Tom Christie set the Crusaders on their way as they fought back from 14-0 down in the 21st minute to guarantee a return to their home fortress next week to face the Chiefs or Brumbies. Neither the Chiefs nor Brumbies, who meet in the second semi-final on Saturday, will relish a trip to Christchurch, where the Crusaders are now unbeaten in 31 playoff matches over the three decades of Super Rugby. The Blues made it clear that they would be looking to play an expansive game from the third minute when Beauden Barrett fired a crosskick over to Caleb Clarke on the left wing. The Crusaders snuffed out the danger that time but the visitors soon silenced the crowd when a raking AJ Ram kick resulted in a five-metre scrum and winger Mark Tele'a dived over in the corner for the opening try. The home side were reduced to 14 men when Braydon Ennor was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle and centre Rieko Ioane went over under the posts to double the lead with a second try for the Blues. The Crusaders cut the deficit soon after being returned to a full complement when openside flanker Christie forced his way over from close range after series of his teammates had been repelled. Blues prop Joshua Fusitu'a was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on All Blacks captain Scott Barrett three minutes later and the crowd was back to full voice just before the break when Jordan crossed for a converted try to level up the scores. The Blues spurned a straightforward shot at goal from a 51st minute penalty before knocking on from the tap and being pinged by the referee at the resultant scrum. The Crusaders then laid siege to the Blues line, turning down several potential shots at goal in favour of kicks to touch before Jordan played tight forward to finally force the ball over the line with 10 minutes left on the clock. First five Rivez Reihana slotted his third conversion to take the lead out to 21-14 and the visitors' woes deepened when No 8 Hoskins Sotutu was sent to the sin bin minutes later.
