Celtic and TV stars back bid for statue of Lisbon Lion
The Tommy Gemmell Community Project is raising funds for a bronze statue of the footballing icon to be placed in his hometown. Tommy scored the first goal in Celtic's victory, which secured the team affectionately known as the Lisbon Lions the 1967 Champions League trophy. The statue would be placed in Craigneuk, where he grew up and lived when he first signed for Celtic at the age of 16. His family, including his widow, Mary Gemmell, are part of the project, and she told us how "important" it is to have the "special" man honoured there. Celtic and TV stars back bid for statue of Lisbon Lion (Image: SNS Images) Scottish actor and proud Celtic fan Martin Compston has given his support to the bid for the statue, describing Tommy as "one of Scotland's greatest ever players" and also "one of our greatest characters too." READ MORE: Statue of Lisbon Lion bid backed by Celtic legend's family His support is joined by fellow actor Tony Roper, who shared a touching tribute to Tommy while sharing a story about him having hidden talents. Tony tells the tale of being in Barcelona with their partners and going to an Argentinian steakhouse. After eating, they're treated to entertainment from Argentinian Tango dancers who dazzle them with a complicated routine. Once they're finished, he explains that Tommy got up to dance with Tony's wife, Isabella, who had been a dancer for most of her life. Tommy then perfectly executes the technical dance routine, and Tony said, "he was sensational." Tony finishes his story with a plea, he asked: "If you don't think a world-class footballer, who could do the Argentinian tango perfectly without breaking his partner's feet and also came from Craigneuk, doesn't deserve a statue there, I don't know what you need to do?" READ MORE: READ MORE: WATCH: Tommy Gemmell's two European Cup final goals for Celtic A long list of Celtic legends, including John Hartson, James Forrest, and Daizen Maeda, have supported the cause. John Hartson spoke of the "wonderful man" and "great player" and how he was "privileged to meet him a few times." READ MORE: Fans gather at Celtic Park to pay tribute to Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell Forrest and Maeda were videoed in their cars with t-shirts created by the project, which read 'Lisbon 1967 Gemmell Craigneuk', and both share the message 'support the Tommy Gemmell Community Project.' We spoke with Tommy's widow, Mary Gemmell, about the project. Mary, who's a "very young 73", said: "The statue is the main focus right now, but the idea behind it being a community project is that we want it to be so much more than a statue. "Tommy was so proud of where he came from and was such a believer in helping people however he could - he went to every charity event he could. "So to have his legacy be helping the whole community would be special for such a special man." Mary Gemmell with some of the community project team (Image: Supplied) The initial target would see the statue made by world-famous sculptor Andy Edwards. His work includes statues of the Beatles and football legends like Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough, and Peter Taylor. Further money raised would go towards helping the Craigneuk community. The team project has a few events lined up, with a dinner dubbed an evening with John Hartson and special guests at Dalziel Park Hotel on August 15, and a golf day organised for September 5th. You can find out more about the project and the events here.

BBC Alba launch search for homegrown talent to play Belladrum festival
The broadcaster has teamed up with The Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival to unearth the next top talent from the Highlands and Islands in a bid to celebrate newcomers to Scotland's music scene. The competition is open to solo artists and bands, where at least 50% of their members have a Highland home address, across all genres, with one newcomer receiving the opportunity to open the main stage at the Hot House Arena on Thursday, 31 July. As the festival prepares for its 21st year, with acts including Texas, Supergrass, Paul Heaton, Tom Walker, and Natasha Bedingfield confirmed, BBC ALBA is on the hunt to find the best new homegrown talent to add to the lineup. READ MORE: Winter festivals worth almost £200 million to Edinburgh, report shows Calum McConnell, commissioning editor at BBC ALBA, said: 'While there is nothing quite like the atmosphere of being in the field at a festival, shoulder to shoulder with fellow music and arts fans, BBC ALBA remain committed to bringing the magic of Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival to audiences who can't be there in person, as we have done for the past 13 years. 'Our festival highlights are always a popular fixture in BBC ALBA's summer schedule, and this year will be no exception. The addition of the talent search will shine an even brighter light on the incredible creativity emerging from the Highlands and Islands.' (Image: BBC ALBA) Held on the Belladrum Estate in Kiltarlity, the festival has grown in popularity over the past 20 years and now attracts thousands of visitors. BBC ALBA, which held a similar competition last year, said it aims to support Scottish artists and aims to provide a platform to propel newcomers into the industry. The lucky winner will also have the additional opportunity to record an acoustic session in the BBC ALBA studio at the festival. Musicians can apply by submitting a bio and link to their music to tartanheart@ with entries judged by a panel of experts, including representatives from the BBC and Belladrum, alongside an independent musician appearing at the festival, before the shortlist goes to a public vote. Applications will open on May 27 at 9am and will close at 11.59pm on June 8. It is expected that the public vote will open on June 13 on the Belladrum website and will close on June 20, ahead of Belladrum Tartan Heart Music Festival 2025, which runs from July 31 to August 2.

Love Island fans fear Scottish beauty Alima Gagio might be the first to leave the show
Love Island kicked off last night with host Maya Jama revealing that one Islander is at risk of being dumped from the Villa with fans believing it could be Scottish beauty Alima Gagio. Love Island kicked off last night, marking the start of summer as fans tuned in across the country, Maya Jama once again left the villa speechless with a shell-shocking announcement. The host dropped a major bombshell when she returned to the villa for a second time during the launch episode. Maya gathered the islanders in their newly formed couples around the fire-pit as she revealed the day was far from over and someone new was already on their way. Las Vegas pool host Toni entered the villa as the first bombshell of the season and the first contestant from the United States, attracting gasps and confused looks from the rest of the islanders. The couples were left stunned when Toni stated: "Good Evening UK! Surprise!" Maya quickly shared the news that Toni would be stealing one of the boys, and she eventually stole Ben from Shakira - leaving her single and at risk of being dumped from the Island. However, fans aren't worried about Shakira being vulnerable, as they fear Scottish contestant Alima will be more at risk of being dumped before she can get started. The 23-year-old Glasgow native is currently paired with construction manager Blu, but the pair failed to hit it off. Alima chose to couple up with Blu after being drawn to his dating profile - another unusual twist by production. Later in the show, Blu brutally told her: "You're not my type on paper." Alima also expressed her disinterest as she said "I'm not feeling him" after his brutal comment. This led fans of the show to believe Alima's time on the Island might be up, as Blu will get to know Shakira leaving the Scottish beauty with no-one to couple up with. Fans took to social media to express their concerns, as they have already taken a strong liking to Alima from her carefree attitude and fiery stand out Scottish accent. One viewer wrote on X, formally known as Twitter: "Alima might be in danger, there's actually no one in here for her.. The system has failed her." Another wrote: "Sneaky feeling Alima might be the girl that's been dumped." While a third viewer expressed: "Alima being arguably the most beautiful woman of this season and still getting disrespected on DAY 1… I need to sit down." A forth agreed: "If Alima is gone, so am I … 0/10 first episode just like I thought." Although one fan made a comment, suggesting an idea for the Love Island bosses: "When Alima gets dumped tomorrow and she gets booked on that flight to enter as a bombshell on Love Island USA 2 days later and she gets the hot girl summer she deserves." Which attracted the attention of other viewers, as the post gained attraction with fans expressing "I actually need this to happen" and "YESSS." The USA version of Love Island is currently filming in Fiji, having started a week prior to the UK version.
