
Newport: Uskmouth B power station battery project debate
The former coal-fired station, located south of the city near Nash, is set for a major transformation.
Developers Simec Atlantis Energy and the Cardiff Capital Region announced an £8.5 million loan on top of £56.5 million private investment.
They say the battery site could create more than 500 jobs and boost Newport's economy, while helping the city meet climate targets.
But many local people are far from convinced.
The project has faced a strong backlash online, with concerns about jobs, environmental impact, and safety risks dominating the discussion.
On Facebook, Karen Fulker said: "They will be jobs for European workers as the energy companies bring them over. Fires are a serious concern with these facilities and becoming more and more common . Sadly all of the green land surrounding this , writhing cabling distance, will be covered in solar power stations.
"There are many applications already in on the Gwent Levels and SSSI , destroying wildlife and habitat forever . We need renewable energy but not at these huge costs , the right thing in the right places .
"The hundreds of jobs that COULD be created will not be for local people . This government is hell bent on trying to meet net zero at any cost , Welsh Government legislation recently released states that SSSI , arable land and the Gwent Levels must be protected so which is it?"
Others are worried about the risks of battery technology.
One person said: "Battery energy storage systems can pose significant risks, including:
"1. Toxic Emissions: Fires can release harmful gases and pollutants, endangering the health of nearby residents and first responders.
"2. Environmental Contamination: The materials in batteries can leak into the environment, contaminating soil and water sources and causing long-term ecological damage.
"3. Thermal Runaway: A failure in one battery cell can lead to thermal runaway, potentially igniting nearby cells and resulting in uncontrollable fires.
"4. Infrastructure Damage: Fires can cause extensive damage to the facility and surrounding infrastructure, leading to costly repairs and disruptions in energy supply.
"These risks highlight the need for stringent safety measures in the operation of battery energy storage systems"
Flood risk was another concern.
One person noted: "Since Newport is going to become one of the largest BESS [Battery Energy Storage System] companies in the UK, it sounds as though we're the experiment for the overall safety of these systems.
"Also, it's based near the sea, on flood plains! Water moisture can enter a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System), and it can pose significant risks, including corrosion, increased fire hazard, and reduced battery lifespan.
"BESS containers are designed to be water-resistant, but complete waterproofing is not always achievable, and certain conditions can allow moisture to penetrate."
"Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable living nearby, as the challenges involved in extinguishing a battery storage fire is very difficult."
Not everyone is against the idea.
Stephen Christopher Bush said: "If we don't invest in technology like this, the Gwent levels we be destroyed by global warming."
Boy Neath echoed environmental concerns, saying protecting wildlife should come first.
However, some remain deeply sceptical about the technology.
Another said: "It is technically impossible to store meaningful amounts of electricity in batteries.
"Thus, the entire project is mainstream window dressing to make people believe that switching off all carbon-based power sources would be feasible without serious human casualties.
"In short, this project is more madness of the 'green' agenda."
The debate shows no sign of cooling, as the city weighs the future of its industrial past and its green ambitions.

Rangers deal underlines appeal of Scottish football in US
Dundee, Dundee United, Hibs and Livingston are also majority-owned by US investors (in addition to the recently relegated St Johnstone), mirroring a pattern which can be seen in the top league in England, where Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United, and Liverpool are owned by investors from across the Pond. In some cases, this pattern of US ownership is clearly producing on-field dividends. In England, Liverpool won the Premier League. Crystal Palace triumphed in the FA Cup, the first major trophy in the history of the South London club, and Aston Villa got to the quarter-finals of the Champions League while securing further European football next season, qualifying for the Europa League. Bournemouth came ninth in the Premier League, equalling its best-ever finish in the top division of English football. Results of American-owned clubs in Scotland have perhaps not been so spectacular, though with respective finishes of third and fourth in the Scottish Premiership, Hibs and Dundee United are not faring too badly at all under US ownership. Rangers fans are certainly hoping the shift to the Cavenagh-49ers consortium will herald a brighter age for a club that has struggled badly to compete for the top prizes in Scotland over the last decade and more. Like all football supporters, that hope is rooted in an expectation that new owners will provide an injection of funding that can transform the club's fortunes on the field while maximising revenue off it. As yet, it is unclear how much investment will be made to achieve that end. In a statement announcing completion of the deal on Friday, the new owners committed to invest £20m into the club 'at this time' by underwriting a fresh rights issue. That will be voted on by shareholders at a general meeting on June 23. Of course, it should be noted that this £20m is over and above the sum – reportedly £75m – the consortium paid to acquire a 51% holding in the club. Read more: While the focus of Rangers fans, and indeed supporters of any club in a similar situation, will naturally fall on how the team can improve, it is worth reflecting on why investors in the US are drawn to invest in football clubs on this side of the Atlantic. In the case of clubs in the English Premier League, the business case seems clear. The most recent domestic TV rights deal secured by the Premier League will be worth a record £6.7 billion for the four years from the 2025/26 season. The deal entitles broadcasters Sky and TNT to show up to 270 live matches a season, and also takes in highlights on the BBC's Match of the Day, MOTD2, and Football Focus. The exposure guaranteed by a deal of this magnitude gives Premier League clubs in England the opportunity to leverage a host of lucrative commercial sponsorship and advertising deals, which in turn allows them to cherry-pick the best players from around the world. With access to such a rich seam of revenue, any investor looking to buy into one of these clubs will have to stump up a pretty penny – the price tag for elite clubs is now measured in billions of pounds – but the prize on offer is huge. Regular access to the Champions League offers tens of millions of pounds of revenue, and opens up the possibility of building a global brand around a team. Some of the deals for English clubs arguably fit into the trend that has been building over recent years of American investors buying up major UK companies on account of favourable exchange rates, which has allowed buyers from across the Atlantic to pick up clubs for comparatively cheap prices. And even though it would cost an American buyer hundreds of millions if not billions of pounds to buy an elite football club in England, those valuations pale into insignificance compared with how much it would cost to buy into an American football franchise. As such, UK football clubs offer cheaper access for US investors to the world of professional sport. When it comes to Scottish football, the arithmetic is a different ball game. Here, the commercial potential is significantly more limited than in England, with the most recent TV deal – agreed with Sky Sports - worth £150m for the period between 2024 and 2029. That deal is worth around £30m per season for each club over the period. The prize money on offer for winning the Premiership is paltry, too, amounting to less than £5m. In this regard, the key attraction for anyone investing in the Scottish game lies in qualifying for the Champions League, which is where the real money can be earned. Celtic raked in a whopping €32 million from participating in the league phase of last season's Champions League, eclipsing the reported €13.5m that Rangers earned from its run to the quarter-final of the Europa League. The imperative for Rangers' new owners to reach the league phase of the Champions League next season, therefore, could hardly be stronger, and the pressure on whoever is brought in as head coach, and the new-look squad that is expected to be assembled, could hardly be greater by the time the first qualifying round comes around in late July. In the past, local businessmen – and it was men more often than not – invested in their local football club for the love of the game. Some did it to gain kudos or influence in their local area. Now, the ability or willingness of business people based in Scotland to become involved seems a good deal more limited, with a few exceptions such as Dave Cormack at Aberdeen or Billy Bowie at Kilmarnock. And it is perhaps no surprise. In these highly uncertain times, the stakes are a good deal higher, especially for those who have shelled out millions of pounds, if not billions, for a seat at the table.

That backing does appear to have extended to the transfer market as well. Brazil star Matheus Cunha is already confirmed to be on board at Old Trafford in a £62.5million arrival from Wolves. Meanwhile, club captain Bruno Fernandes has opted to stay despite a mega £700,000-a-week offer to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. He has played as a striker at points for Wolves but he is not the type to make regular runs behind the defensive line, preferring to drop deeper in order to receive and link play. That means he is arguably more effective in behind a main striker, which could create an overlap of profiles with the likes of Fernandes. Below we break down the tactical fit of Cunha at Man Utd under Amorim. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Intelligent movement around the penalty area It is interesting to note that towards the end of the season we saw Wolves typically play the same tactical shape as Man Utd did under Amorim. Their 3-4-2-1 shape saw Cunha used either as a 9 or as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the main striker. The Brazilian is also difficult to deal with defensively because when defending deep opposition players will typically be concentrating on being tight and defending the space between the ball and the goal. Cunha takes advantage of this with sharp movements to outplay defenders and create shooting opportunities. 10 Here we see Cunha positioned outside of the box before he then takes a clever touch and bends the ball into the goa We believe Cunha would be able to play in a similar kind of role to Fernandes as both are extremely intelligent in the attacking phase of the game. This would mean, however, that Man Utd would still need to add a new forward to play ahead of him, assuming they decide Rasmus Hojlund is not the long term solution. This could be an issue solved in the near future with the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The type of runs Mbeumo makes would be perfect to stretch the length of the pitch and offer passing options or decoys for Cunha to benefit from. Indeed, the runs Mbeumo makes are extremely close to those of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool and could benefit both Cunha and Fernandes greatly. With Fernandes being more comfortable as a passer and creator from deeper areas, we should see Cunha acting as the link between the Portugal star and the forward. 10 Here Cunha is smart enough to check his run behind the back-pedalling defence before he gets the ball and is able to finish Given Fernandes is well known as one of the most aggressive and creative passers in the league he will enjoy having a player like Cunha alongside him to find space in tight areas. While Cunha is not an out and out striker, his movement and intelligence of positioning around the area will create real threat. Not just a finisher Cunha impressed in front of goal last season as he finished with 15 league goals, while he was also able to provide a creative threat for his team But Cunha has long been seen as more of a creative attacker than a true goalscorer, such as when he was at Hertha Berlin or Atletico Madrid. The same is true in deeper positions, especially in transition, when Cunha was capable of getting on the ball and play the final line breaking ball to release team-mates. He was extremely versatile with his positioning as he occupied pockets across the width of the penalty area. 10 Here Cunha has the ball in the left channel, drives at goal and then has the quality to slip the ball to a team-mate making a run beyond him In terms of his on pitch relationship with Fernandes, it will be interesting to see how Cunha interacts with him given their respective preferred creative operating areas. The 30-year-old is less of a runner and more of a passer which could create disconnects with Cunha due to a lack of vertical runners around him. With that said, the two should be able to connect deeper with Cunha being the player to make the more aggressive vertical run off the back of that connection. The issue Man Utd may have is they will essentially have two advanced midfielders without an effective focal point striker to play off of and make the ball stick. 10 Here Cunha has the ball wide and has the quality to pick out the deep run from his team-mate It is all very well for Amorim to add creativity and dangerous passing to their attacking unit. But they need to ensure that they have the players ahead of the ball that can make the runs to take advantage of those passes. Decision making and intelligence Cunha is a player who can become decisive for the Red Devils both in scoring goals and creating chances, and that is down to his supreme intelligence and strong decision making. This is what makes him such a versatile attacker, and it would therefore be somewhat wasteful to play him as the main striker. He is far better when allowed to play deeper and underneath a more physical and aggressive striker. 10 Cunha's intelligent movement off the back of the opposition midfield gives a team-mate a passing options before another striker pins an opposition defender Essentially, Man Utd should be looking to use a striker who can threaten space behind the defensive line. This should force the opposition defensive line deeper and then we would see Cunha, and Bruno, with more space that they could play in underneath the striker. The ability of a player to consistently make correct choices in terms of the timing and direction of his runs is something that is hugely underlooked. 10 Here he drops off the highest line to come back in and occupy a pocket of space between defenders Especially given the pace of the modern game and the intensity of the Premier League. The fact, Cunha always seems to give team-mates what they need at the right time will be hugely beneficial to Man Utd in terms of helping them to unlock opposition teams. Conclusion In our opinion signing a player like Cunha off the back of a terrible season will be a real boost for the Red Devils and their fans. What is critical though, is Cunha is then surrounded with more signings in key areas to give him the support to make the most of his attacking and creative abilities. Given Man Utd are already looking to add Mbeumo to their ranks, it would suggest an awareness they need to add more options in the attacking third. It will still be a long summer ahead for Man Utd's recruitment team.

Reports suggest that the Firefly will be available in UK showrooms imminently, according to Autocar. Qin Lihong, Nio's president, revealed that it would launch a right-hand-drive variant for the UK by October. The Chinese car brand is rapidly expanding across Europe, aiming to enter 16 new global markets this year. It comes after an ultra-ambitious car maker revealed a new budget EV that some claim could rival Tesla. Little-known Chinese manufacturer Nio is to release a sub-brand called Firefly - which will offer entry-level electric vehicles. Spy shots have revealed the brand testing a small city-style hatchback, which is tipped to be showcased to the world on December 21 for their so-called Nio Day in Guangzhou, China. Known for their advanced technology and innovative features, Nio is a relatively new EV startup - established in 2014 and adopting its current name in 2016. New EV from China that's 'over £5,000 cheaper than Tesla' coming to the UK in weeks Their first mass-produced car was the ES8, an all-electric SUV, which began sales in June 2018. Nio also has a family-oriented brand called Onvo, with Onvo L60 the only model currently available for sale under that name. The new Firefly marque will sit at the bottom of their tier of brands and will focus on small and mid-size EVs. Automotive outlet CarScoops first revealed the motor back in March, and new photos they obtained revealed it will look like a typical hatchback in size with a short front and rear overhang - resembling the five-door Mini Cooper and BYD Dolphin. Photos of the Firefly's interior have also been published by IT Home and CarNewsChina. Judging by these, it appears it will feature a large central infotainment screen along with a digital instrument cluster - all despite its budget-orientated appeal. Little else is known about the new hatchback, and it will initially be launched in China before it comes to Europe - although tariff hikes will likely make it pricier than originally planned. The release of the Firefly could certainly give Tesla something to think about in the future.
