RENOWNED as the King of Fast Fashion, China-based firm Shein has found itself in hot water on multiple occasions, concerning everything from human rights violations to using child labour.
And now, a bombshell investigation has alleged that workers at Shein supplier factories are developing blisters from being on their feet for 30,000 worth of steps a day, and also working into the early hours of the morning to meet 'crushing inventory' demands.

Most of those factories are in the so-called 'Shein Village' in Guangzhou, China, which YouTube documentarian Cinthia Lin took a visit to.

Amid constant
She found job boards packed with openings for garment production, with one jobseeker claiming that the wages paid were significantly lower than those advertised.
Their job adverts allegedly 'exaggerate the total earnings for sewing machine operators', with garment makers paid per-piece rather than on a salaried basis.
On average, workers in Shein supplier factories are paid pennies per piece, according to Cinthia's findings.

The average earnings for a garment maker are around £525.02 per month, but they can make double that at £1,050.05 if they work over 12 hours per day, at least six days a week.
In some cases, overtime is even mandatory and doesn't come with premium pay, just the same per-piece pay rate.

One worker that Cinthia interviewed worked mandatory hours of 8am till 10pm and only had two breaks for lunch and dinner.
Videos from inside the factories - both in Cinthia's documentary and on TikTok - show workers hunched over on metal stools with no back support as they sew garments, while others walk around with their hands on their back as if in pain.
'Workers walk 20,000 to 30,000 steps daily, with blistered feet and worn out shoes,' Cinthia observed. 'Many quit within weeks.

'These workers are not classified as Shein employees because they work for factories that handle Shein's outsourced production.
'While filming, I felt deeply conflicted. On one hand, the workers and factory owners are grateful for the orders, as they rely on this work to support their families in a competitive urban economy.
'Many have no better alternatives but to endure situations mentioned in this video in silence.'
Factory owners claim that the profit margins working for Shein are 'razor thin', with most items yielding a profit of 52p.

Antrim couple awarded £300,000 over gossip site libel case
A Co Antrim-based business couple have been awarded £300,000 libel damages as part of a landmark legal battle to uncover the operator of gossip website, Tattle Life. Entrepreneurs Neil and Donna Sands secured the payout in a defamation and harassment lawsuit over abusive comments posted on Tattle Life. The online forum, which hosts threads commenting on influencers, celebrities and general members of the public, has attracted up to 12 million visitors a month. Details of the case can be revealed after reporting restrictions on naming the defendant companies and suspected operator of the site, Sebastian Bond, were lifted at the High Court in Belfast today. In December 2023 Mr and Mrs Sands obtained awards of £150,000 in damages each, plus legal costs in mounting the action over what they regarded as a form of "hate speech". It is believed to be the largest defamation payout of its kind in Northern Ireland. A series of freezing orders for more than £1m were also made while a worldwide forensic investigation was carried out to identify the defendants and their assets. In a ruling delivered at that stage, Mr Justice McAlinden stated: "A day of reckoning will come for those behind Tattle Life and for those individuals who posted on Tattle Life." Neil Sands, a 43-year-old technology entrepreneur, and his wife Donna, 34, who runs a fashion business, sued over posts made back in February 2021. The couple claimed they had been subject to a campaign of harassment, invasion of privacy, defamation and breach of data rights. According to the judge, the site had been set up to deliberately inflict hurt and harm on others by allowing the anonymous trashing of people's reputations. "This is clearly a case of peddling untruths for profit," he stated. In a complex two-year legal battle undertaken at their own cost, Mr and Ms Sands deployed advanced technological and intelligence methods as they sought to discover who was in charge of the site. The defendants can now be identified as UK national Sebastian Bond and the British and Hong Kong-registered companies Yuzu Zest Limited and Kumquat Tree Limited. Barrister Peter Girvan argued it was now beyond doubt that Mr Bond operated the site. With reporting restrictions and anonymity orders lifted, further legal efforts are now expected to focus on securing enforcement of the damages award. Speaking outside court, Mr Sands stressed the case had also been taken on behalf of others who have suffered serious personal and professional harm through anonymous online attacks. "We believe in free speech but not consequence-free speech; particularly where it is intended to, and succeeds in, causing real-world damage to people's lives, livelihoods and mental health," he said. "We were in the fortunate position to be able to take the fight to these faceless operators, and it took a lot of time, effort and expense. " Solicitor Peter Barr of Gateley NI, who represented the couple, detailed the scope of the global forensic investigation. "We had to pursue the money around the world, from the UK to Hong Kong, using a mix of legal innovation and digital evidence to expose what was clearly a sophisticated effort to avoid scrutiny," he said. "This judgment sends a clear message that online anonymity cannot shield unlawful behaviour."

SUPER hoofers — human and animal — have ties with Ledbury, a gallopingly good split-level property in Conna. Ledbury's connections with speed and stamina are as follows: The Waterford joiner that built the staircase in Castlehyde for Lord of the Dance's Michael Flatley, also made the staircase at Ledbury; the horse that won the 2003 Aintree Grand National, Monty's Pass, trained in the yard next door. Staircase at Ledbury Amidst all this fancy footwork, it was inevitable that some of it would rub off on Ledbury which comes with its own stable yard and four loose boxes, each fitted with automatic drinkers, rubber matting and feed mangers. Four stables ready for new occupants There's a grass arena too, and a large feed and tack room (also for use as a covered hay barn) and there's a water supply to three drinking troughs in the fields around the house, where horses or ponies can graze to their hock's content. It's the kind of set-up you'd envisage as the dream buy for a family of horsey types. Ledbury didn't start out with its best hoof forward. In 1979, the year it was built, it was no more than an over-basement bungalow, owned by agricultural advisor John Anthony, who used the basement for offices. He sold it in 2012 to a UK-based couple, Jo and Patrick Clarke, who relocated from Derbyshire, after falling for the pretty Bride Valley village of Conna. The Clarke's took the bit between the teeth and re-ordered the house completely, upgrading every element, installing the new staircase, and ultimately delivering a high-end home, with a commendable B3 energy rating, and enough space (3,700 sq ft) for an entire yard of stable hands. In time, the house and three acres of grounds outgrew the Clarke's and they put it on the market in 2016 — whereupon it was spotted by a family looking to move out of a semi-d in Midleton's Broomfield to a detached home in the countryside. 'My wife Laura always had an eye out for a detached home with more room and when she saw Ledbury, she absolutely fell for it,' says current owner, Henry Switzer, who bought the property, next door to the yard of horse trainer Jimmy Mangan (Monty's Pass) in 2017. Although their kids are more focused on swimming pools than stables, the couple themselves knew a thing or two about horses. Laura had been involved in eventing and Henry had found himself 'of all places, on one of the German national studs outside Munich, while I was trying to become a sound engineer'. They put Ledbury to good use as a sanctuary for mistreated ponies, taking referrals from My Lovely Horse Animal Rescue. 'They were ponies that had been mistreated, so getting them to trust humans again— that was so, so rewarding,' Henry says. 'Like people, some horses are difficult and some are easy,' he adds. The Switzers also fostered a few lurchers and kept hens. 'What the house represented for us was freedom – to move around, to have animals, room for the kids to roam. It was very much a lifestyle choice for us,' Henry says. Among the loveliest features is the acre of landscaped gardens and the various patio and terrace areas that overlook them. The star of the show though is the first-floor roof top garden terrace, with spectacular views to the Galtee and Knockmealdown mountains. The same views — spanning four counties — are served up to the sunroom, which opens onto the terrace, as does the first floor living room. Sensibly, the main daytime accommodation is upstairs — including the kitchen (with AGA) and family room. The kitchen at Ledbury Six bedrooms are spread across the two floors, with one in use as a library. The main downstairs bedroom has French doors to a patio and there's a conservatory to the rear. Rear terrace Henry says he will 'miss the views the most', but that it's time to move on as their kids' needs have changed. Adrianna Hegarty of Hegarty Properties is selling the five-bed Conna home with double garage and brings it to market with an AMV of €610,000. 'It's been redesigned and renovated to a very high spec and orientated to make the most of the spectacular views,' the agent says. She adds that it 'will excite families with an interest in horses, as well as fishing enthusiasts' as both the rivers Blackwater and Bride are nearby. Moreover the layout could easily accommodate guest accommodation or Airbnb, Ms Hegarty says. Conna village is within walking distance of Ledbury, the town of Midleton is a 20-minute drive, Fermoy is 10 minutes away, there's handy access to the Dublin motorway and Shannon Airport is 30 minutes by car.
