Preps under way for Chicago's Puerto Rican Fest amid concerns about ICE
The 44th annual Fiestas Patronales Puertorriqueñas takes over Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood beginning Thursday.
The Puerto Rican Festival and cultural celebration has been around for decades. But this year, there are new concerns as agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to round up undocumented immigrants.
As tents went up Wednesday in the park of Humboldt Park, those involved said safety and security were top of mind for both the parade and festival.
"We're very excited, you know, to celebrate," said Puerto Rican Fest organizer Melissa Gomez. "This is our 44th year for the festival."
Equipment checks were happening Wednesday on the main stage, where 15 musical acts will entertain the masses Thursday through Sunday. There are also carnival rides and attractions, and of course, the food.
"We have many of our classic food vendors our Ponce [Restaurant] with the alcapurrias [banana dumplings stuffed with pork] — and we have some new additions here too," said Gomez.
This is also the 47th year for the Puerto Rican People's Day Parade in the community. On Saturday, the parade starts at noon at the corner of Division Street and Campbell Avenue.
This year, pueblos, or towns, on the island of Puerto Rico will be represented at the parade — showcasing their heritage and culture.
"On our fiestas float for the Puerto Rican Fest, we will have all 78 towns represented with their flag, with a flag holder who is from that town," said Gomez.
Chicago police said they will have additional resources in place to ensure the safety of those attending the event and those, living and working in the area.
Meanwhile, Ald. Jessie Fuentes (26th) said security for the festival is a top priority.
"We work on safety months in advance," Fuentes said. "We've been meeting for the last six months with CPD, violence prevention organizations and the private security firm that the festival producers hire."
Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. But Ald. Fuentes said there are also concerns for those of Latino heritage who are not Puerto Rican and may want to attend the festivities — amid recent ICE raids in the city.
"We have this particular event fenced. It's a private event by ticket sales. ICE just can't come in here, right?" said Fuentes. "And so we want to make sure that residents and anyone who want to frequent the festival understands that they are safe in this park. Unless ICE has a judicial warrant of any sort, they cannot just walk into this festival and start taking people."
Ald. Fuentes also said if there are ICE sightings at the festival, people will be made aware — and a trained member of a deportation defense group would be called in to help.

82 Thoughts I Had While Watching And Just Like That… Season 3, Episode 3
It feels like just yesterday that Carrie Bradshaw was footloose (by which I mean: financially loose when it came to buying footwear), fancy-free, and single. But on this season of And Just Like That…, she seems determined to make an extremely weird and nonsensical relationship arrangement with Aidan work, and I'm just as determined to criticize it obsessively despite the fact that these are fictional characters who cannot hear my desperate pleas for normalcy. Episode 3 of And Just Like That…'s third season is upon us, and below, find literally every thought I had about it: Love how much screen time Shoe the cat is getting this season! Why isn't Amy Sedaris back as Carrie's book agent? Oh, right, she was Carrie's book publisher. Carrie in Austin for SXSW? Look out, South Congress! Oh, LOL, she's going to Virginia to be near Aidan. Good Lord, woman. You're in your 50s! Date someone who's allowed to be in the same state as you, or whatever! Anthony's hot-bread-guys business is really a sexual harassment suit waiting to happen. 'Is body negativity back?' Well, yes! Carrie, you are also too old to get your friends to catsit for free. Pay a teen! Or that cute 20-something jewelry designer you're friends with! Charlotte's a momfluencer now? OMG, Aidan's wife (a.k.a. Midge from Mad Men, a.k.a. Rosemarie DeWitt, my biggest crush of all time) is calling Carrie? She looks so good in glasses! LOL, she needs Carrie to bring their son Adderall? Hey, why not conscript your ex-husband's long-distance GF to traffic stimulants across state lines? How in the know is Carrie, exactly, if she doesn't know about that one shady doctor on Court Street who will prescribe pretty much whatever you want? I mean, I've heard. I find it hard to believe that any high-powered New York mom would part with her child's precious focus meds, but Charlotte does have a way of getting things done. Lisa's bob is bobbing this episode! I love Charlotte's art-world girlypops and their ridiculous hats. We all have that one boomer or boomer-adjacent colleague who dispenses Advil from their purse for our hangovers, and they are an irreplaceable part of the office ecosystem. So Carrie's hot landscaper has a key, but Aidan doesn't? Sounds like a solid relationship! This season's Carrie/Aidan mishegoss is making me tear out my hair in frustration. I feel like Miranda watching Bi Bingo! Ooh, Miranda asked out Joy the BBC producer! Sort of! Not Carrie lecturing Miranda for 'playing games' when she's essentially playing a high-stakes game of Monopoly with the man who's supposed to be her life partner. Loving Rock's little sailor look! Anthony's Italian BF is invited over for dinner but Lily's little ballet boy isn't? Rude! I, personally, would love to see Harry Goldenblatt at da club. Surely the kids (the gay ones, at least) still get Fame references, right? 'A gay 90 is a straight 70.' Tea, Seema's weird old boss! Please, God, let Seema's next love-interest storyline not include this generic-ass symmetrical white man she works with. Harry and Carrie is a combination I'd like to see more of! Carrie and Seema in Virginia, however…nah. Ooh, I like the idea of Seema and Adam, the hot landscaper! SHOUTOUT! I'm canonically part of this show now. Carrie, I'll catsit Shoe! Or sell you Adderall! Just kidding, FBI. Damn, Lisa, mash those potatoes! Sorry, I took a break to google 'potato masher best one which' and missed whatever Lisa and her husband are talking about. Virginia with 'heart-healthy' food? What's even the point? Gay men really catching strays on this episode. And now, over to lesbians! Hi, Miranda and Joy! I need to rewatch Doll & Em. Ooh, hot vibes between these two. Finally, an appropriate queer paramour for Miranda! Not that I don't miss Che Diaz with every fiber of my being, mind you. God, I really am aging, because the sound of an art-world afterparty no longer sounds sexy or fun; it just sounds expensive and tiring and like I'd have to feign familiarity with a lot of nouns I'd never heard before. A little dignity for Harry, please! He deserves better than getting trapped in his skinny jeans! He pissed himself?!? After four drinks? Amateur hour, babe. Even in Japanese denim. NEED Seema's snakeskin pajamas. 'Maybe stop feeling his dick through his pants and just have a conversation.' Good advice from Charlotte! God, blond guys who collect art are so cursed. Not that I've ever met one IRL, but I'm not enjoying the look of this one onscreen. Oh, sweet Char, you'll learn tomorrow that chugging espresso martinis to keep up with zoomers is a fool's errand. Watching Charlotte York dance drunkenly at a club is giving me delightful flashbacks to that original SATC episode where she…dances drunkenly at a club. Time is a flat circle. Babe, you are a mother of two! Do NOT do cocaine! Test it, at least! Okay, phew, she didn't. Ew, ugly blond art guy kissed Charlotte! Non-consensually, I might add! Kill all men, FR. Carrie asking 'Why am I here?'…amazing question, babe! LOL, Carrie's license has been expired since 2017 because she travels with a passport. Same, in fact! Aw, Giuseppe wore the slutty Hot Fellas denim uniform for Anthony. Why is Carrie using Waze instead of Google Maps? Mistake! Always a mistake! I will die on this hill! And this isn't spon-con, because they're both owned by Google or Palantir or Darth Vader or whatever! Charlotte worsening her hungover headache with her own high-pitched 'Yay' is so peak York-Goldenblatt. I wish all these car-related mistakes Carrie and Seema are making weren't so richly familiar to me. Ask me about the time me and my friend Natalie put diesel in a gas car we'd borrowed (in our defense, though, we were eighteen.) Okay, so Carrie can stay the night now? But she wasn't proactively invited? WHAT IS THIS RELATIONSHIP? I swear to God, I got more direct communication from the drummers I 'dated' back in my 'straight' era. Aidan didn't tell his sons Carrie was coming?!? I am going to kill this man. Also, as the formerly unstable child of divorced parents who both dated after their split…your kid will be fine with you having a girlfriend, Aidan, if you just stop being so weird about it! Now that I think of it, why did Kathy have to ask Carrie for the 'rall instead of Aidan? Carrie's writing her bad fiction again :) I'm sorry, is she in a guest room? AIDAN SHAW, YOU WILL BEGIN TO COUGH IN THREE DAYS.

Dolly Wells Knows You Miss Doll & Em, But Dating Miranda on ‘And Just Like That…' Isn't a Bad Next Act
With the halcyon days of Che Diaz now behind us, keeping up with who Miranda Hobbes is dating and/or swooning over on the third season of And Just Like That… is some of the most gay fun I've had in a while. The lastest person to turn her head, in Love Island parlance? Dolly Wells as Joy, the beautiful, gossip-loving, buttoned-up-yet-mirthful BBC producer. Wells is perhaps best known for co-starring alongside her real-life bestie Emily Mortimer on Doll & Em, the HBO series they wrote together in the mid-2010s, but her acting resume is an impressive one; she's appeared in everything from the Bridget Jones franchise (Woney forever) to Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (Real British comedy heads will also remember her guest spots on Peep Show.) Now, it's time for American audiences to get to know Wells as part of the Carrie Bradshaw extended universe—and the 53-year-old actress is more than ready. Ahead of season three, episode three of And Just Like That, Vogue spoke to Wells about rewatching the original Sex and the City, playing Miranda's latest paramour, getting recognized in the park, worshipping the BBC, and more. Vogue: Were you a viewer of Sex and the City when it first aired? Dolly Wells: You know what's crazy? I wasn't, and I don't know why. I can't explain it now. I didn't watch it when I was young, but it's sort of like suddenly realizing how delicious dark chocolate or something is. I've watched it all now; I had a sort of Sex and the City holiday. All my friends watched it at the time that it came out, but I've often gone through stages of people just being so confused that I've never seen Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. I was probably just trying to be cool. Did you have a favorite boyfriend—or girlfriend!—of the week from the original show? Oh, God, well, I love Baryshnikov as Carrie's Russian boyfriend. He was a really good one. I loved what busy daters they were. I wasn't busy, and I really should have taken a leaf out of their books. [Laughs.]

‘And Just Like That …' Season 3, Episode 3 Recap: An Expensive Date
Season 3, Episode 3: 'Carrie Golightly' They say Virginia is for lovers. They do not say Virginia is for casual lunches and sleeping alone in a guesthouse. In Episode 3, it is Carrie who visits Aidan at his home, but not because her 'boyfriend' (I'm still using quotes around that word and you can't stop me) did something crazy like invite her. It is because Virginia is on a list of locations Carrie could go to promote her work, along with sexier options like Google's Palo Alto office and Austin's South by Southwest festival. First of all, why does Carrie even have to choose? She is a childless cat lady with no looming deadlines. What is stopping her from hitting up all three to boost her clout in preparation for an upcoming foray into historical fiction? But Williamsburg, Va. is the only place our gal wants to go because it's vaguely near Aidan, and she thinks that if she pops down south, cool as a cucumber, 'easy breezy,' with no expectations, Aidan might be willing to meet her for a quick meal. Because the bar for this relationship is in the basement. The saddest part about all this is that Carrie feels she needs a cover story in the first place. She can say, 'I love you,' to Aidan, but apparently, she can't simply say, 'I want to see you.' And that's really Aidan's fault; she is just playing by his rules. But this game sucks. Thankfully, Miranda is in touch with her judgy side, as she can't stop cracking jokes about Carrie venturing over the river and through the woods for merely a bite to eat with her beau. Yet, Miranda is concocting a cover story of her own. After some bad luck in the romance department this season that included a tryst with a nun and a snub from a straight 'guacamole girl,' Miranda is finally sweet on someone she would make sense with: Joy (Dolly Wells) the BBC producer.
