Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea on alert as Pedro decision made after bust-up
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has refused to select Joao Pedro for their final match of the season against Tottenham on Sunday despite the Seagulls' European hopes hanging in the balance
Joao Pedro won't be in Brighton's squad to face Tottenham on Sunday as the fallout from his training ground altercation with team-mate Jon Paul van Hecke continues.
The £30m striker was a surprise omission from Albion's teamsheet for the 3-2 win against Liverpool on Monday, with news of the bust-up only revealed after the match. And Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler insists the Brazilian, who has 10 goals and seven assists this season, won't travel to Spurs either.
Hurzeler confirmed: 'Joao won't be in the squad. We had a small issue in training – a type which isn't uncommon from time to time in all football clubs. We dealt with it internally and the matter is closed.
'Joao is an incredible football player. He's a match-winner for us and he's a great player. That's why we invested in him. But there are principles, they are non-negotiable and everyone has to abide by them. Everyone has to stick to them and I don't make any compromises.'
The hard line taken by Hurzeler has alerted a string of clubs who have been linked with Joao Pedro in the transfer market this month. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been mentioned in recent weeks and if Brighton decide to cash in there will certainly be takers.
However, Hurzeler says the player still has a future at Albion. He added: 'Joao is still a young player and there's still a lot of potential where he will grow, and I'm sure that he will learn from this and come back strong next season.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing him renewed and reinvigorated at his highest peak for us and that's all I will say on this.' The incident comes at a bad time for Brighton because they head to Tottenham on Sunday still in with a chance to earn European football.
A win in north London, together with a Chelsea defeat at Nottingham Forest, could open up the route if the Blues go on to win the Conference League next week. But with Brentford also in with a chance if Brighton slip up, Hurzeler knows his team must stay focused.
He said: 'The only thing we can influence is our result and our preparation for the game and that's what we try to do. The other results we can't influence, we try to focus on us.' One aspect in Brighton's favour is that Tottenham 's players have clearly been enjoying their celebrations after winning the Europa League with a victory over Manchester United in Bilbao in midweek.
But Hurzeler was coy about any suggestion that would make life easier for his side. He said: 'We don't know. That's one of the questions I was asked most in the last few hours, but my answer will be always the same.
"I can't influence how they celebrate or how they will prepare for the game. The only things I can influence are how we prepare our team, and we will try to be the best prepared team we can be. That's what our focus is on.' Brighton have no new injuries heading into the game and Lewis Dunk could be back in contention.

Deluded Rangers fans are stuck in the past and here's why I'm staggered by their reaction to Russell Martin
Russell Martin has barely got his feet under the desk at Ibrox – yet even his choice of FOOTWEAR has copped flak from some Rangers fans. It shows you what he's up against. Martin committed the cardinal sin of not slipping on a pair of brogues for his unveiling the other day and it was just another thing to throw at the incoming head coach. The response from some to his appointment has been staggering. It reeks to me of entitlement – and misguided entitlement in that. It seems to me there's a large element who didn't want Martin to get the gig and it's going to take a huge effort to win them over. But I'd like to know, who did they expect to get the job? In fact, we know the answer. I suspect some of them actually thought there was a chance Jose Mourinho was going to walk up the marble staircase this summer. If not Jose, then Steven Gerrard. Or Davide Ancelotti – who obviously played Rangers like a piccolo. Either way, Rangers felt it was going to be some other big name, top level European coach in the hot seat. And now noses are out of joint that it's the guy who got sacked by Southampton months ago after a wretched time in the Premier League. They are coming at it the wrong way – and they are clearly stuck in the past. This isn't the Rangers team of the nineties. They are not going to get an elite European boss like Dick Advocaat strolling in. They are DELUDED. They've barely won a trophy for more than 10 years and there's another major rebuilding job required. And it's going to take time. Martin is as good as anyone to do it. He's got decent experience as a manager. He had a tough job at MK Dons but he kept them up and progressed. It was similar at Swansea and then, don't forget, he did get Southampton promoted from the Championship. That's a brutal division to get out of, but he did it playing good football. If anyone watched their play-off win against Leeds, they would have seen it wasn't all tippy-tippy stuff either. They did it the hard way and weren't afraid to go long. Martin has a reputation for being a purist and stubborn in sticking to his ways, but he has shown he can adapt and evolve. I only met him a few times when he was at Norwich City and he always came across as an intelligent, principled character. He wants his teams to play a certain way and Rangers fans should be happy to hear this stuff. When was the last time this club played attractive football, or had some kind of identity? I certainly can't remember it. There's no doubt Martin has a tough job on his hands. He will want to play his way but he'll need the players to do it. Recruitment will be absolutely critical to his plans, otherwise it will be an uphill struggle. But Rangers fans need to be patient and give him a chance. I'm not saying they will compete or even win the league this coming season. But I am saying it's NOT impossible. You look at the results last season and where the points were dropped. It's not that big a stretch to think with some decent signings they can get the better of the rest of the teams in Scotland and then go up against Celtic. It might not happen straight away but there's no point writing him off before he's sat in the dugout. This is a support that welcomed the likes of Pedro Caixinha and Michael Beale with open arms, they gave Gerrard a thunderous welcome when he'd never been a manager. They were preparing to do it again for Ancelotti, despite having never been out from under his dad's wing. Martin has got experience – and he's also got experience of life at the club. Some people are throwing his tough spell at Ibrox as a player at him. But that could work in his favour. He saw what it was like at rock bottom and the extreme pressure that comes with it. And yet he still took the job. That says a lot. A lot of folk would have run a mile. He's a strong character and he'll need to be. He'll need to completely shake off the loser mentality at the club and that won't be straight forward. Martin could be a good appointment but, at the same time, I doubt Celtic will be too concerned. They need to take care of their own business – and they have to assume Rangers WILL be much improved next season. It's a quiet part of the summer right now but time is ticking and Celtic will need to get into gear. In an ideal world you'd have two or three new faces reporting for the first day of pre-season, giving them time to bed in ahead of the new campaign and the crucial Champions League qualifiers. The transfer market doesn't always work that way but they will need to move quickly to bring in at the very least three new players. Celtic can't afford to sit on their hands and they have to see there's a chance to put the food down early while Rangers get used to the new coaching team and regime.

Host more events to inspire the next generation, says Neita
It will mark the first time that the UK has hosted a standalone major athletics championships since the 2017 World Championships in London, with Neita among more than 100 signatories of an open letter released this week calling for the showpiece event to return to the capital in 2029. Racing in front of a home crowd at Birmingham 2026 is an opportunity that Neita is relishing as she plays her part in trying to give athletics a spotlight in non-Olympic years. "I'm all for inspiring the next generation," she said. "I have an athletics community where I plan sports days and it's super important for me that young kids have the opportunity to be inspired by sport and see it live. "For people who watch us on television, to have the opportunity to come down and see us in person is brilliant. "That's what we need as a sporting country. We need this legacy of putting on top events more often." The past two London Athletics Meets have drawn in sell-out crowds and the 2025 event is no different, which Neita feels is part of a wider boom in interest. "This sport has been growing in the past few years and it's been great to be part of that evolution,' she added. "For so long there was this talk of athletics needing to be picked up and needing help to get more eyes on it, so it's great to see the amount of opportunities that are now coming through. "People are interested in it, we just need the exposure." The Birmingham 2026 ticketing information and timetable has now been unveiled, with 250,000 tickets to go on sale in September, and prices starting from just £10 for adults. Neita won 100m European bronze at Munich 2022 before adding 200m silver to her name two years later in Rome. But even with two relays golds from the continental championships in 2018 and 2024, the sprinter is still eager for her first-ever individual major title and feels confident she will finally bring it home in Birmingham. "It feels to be like it's meant to be," she said. "I've done the bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m, so the only other option is for me to win double gold. "That's how I see it and there's no better place to do it than at home. "That British cheer is definitely what can get me onto the podium again. "I've made an adjustment in terms of my training set up and the plan is that by next summer I will be raring and ready to go. I'm feeling really confident."
