Friends, family recall Blues singer Selby Minner's joyful spirit
Selby Minner sang the blues, but friends, family and others recalled her warm, loving spirit.
'She's the way we would all like to be,' said filmmaker Shironbutterfly Ray, a close friend. 'She was never angry at anyone. I know she always had disagreements, but she always looked to solve with courtesy. Nothing hateful.'
Minner was found dead Tuesday inside the Blues Club in Rentiesville, according to an affidavit by the McIntosh County District Attorney's office. The affidavit said Minner's brother Lewis Carl Guenther, 68 of Rentiesville, earlier told McIntosh County law enforcement he killed his sister.
According to an Oklahoma Arts Council biography, Minner toured nonstop for 12 years with her husband, blues legend D.C. Minner before settling in his birthplace in Rentiesville. They established the Down Home Blues Club and founded the Dusk 'Til Dawn Blues Festival, which has become a Labor Day weekend draw for 34 years.
Ray said she and Minner had just talked about the 35th annual festival last week. Ray said she has emceed the festival.
'Every Labor Day, there's not even a question,' Ray said. 'She was legendary, we honored her as legend not only through Bare Bones, but as a Legacy Keeper, keeping legends alive like D.C. and Miss Blues.'
Ray said Minner helped her with her Legacy Keepers and Bare Bones Film Festival.
'Selby was my soul sister,' Ray said. 'We were our own support system, because we both did festivals.'
Minner's granddaughter Micaela Minner said the woman was 'absolutely amazing.'
'There would be times we would be talking and she would not want to get off the phone,' Micaela Minner said. 'She did not want to let me go. It's just unbelievable. She was always a supporter. I live in Ohio and she would come to visit.'
Ray said people around the world have shared how they're hurt by Selby Minner's death.
Oklahoma Arts Council gave Selby Minner a Community Service Award in 2024 for her 'significant contributions to the arts in specific Oklahoma communities.'
Minner taught guitar at a variety of venues, including veterans' organizations and libraries.
Jim Lucas Checotah Public Library Branch Manager Kenny Matthews said Minner 'loved spreading music.'
'She felt like it was important they could play a song so they would have that inspiration and see that they can play music right away,' Matthews said. 'It helped them fall in love with it the first day.'
Minner also invited Checotah and Warner high school jazz bands to play at the blues festival.
Blues Society of Tulsa honored Minner on its Facebook page.
'Her lifelong work kept the blues alive, and kept blues in schools as an educational tool,' the post said. 'The Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame exists because of her tireless work. Rentiesville is on the maps because of her and the Dusk Til Dawn Festival. While we will miss her greatly, we know that she and D.C. had a joyous reunion and they are playing together again.'
Three Rivers Museum's Facebook post said Minner's 'warmth, dedication and kind spirit touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with her at the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame and D.C. Minner Museum in Rentiesville and at museum events.'
Ray said Selby Minner wished to be buried with her late husband in the Rentiesville cemetery.

On-set, Todd spoke with a behind-the-scenes crew candidly about his own mortality and how he related to Bludworth in one final appearance. "We're acknowledging a passage of time, and I'm not immortal," Todd says in the clip. "I'm struggling with my lifelines just like everybody else. I have to make sense of this character, who he is, where he's coming from, what it is he really wants." The filmmakers strived to make the send-off one worthy of Todd and his character's legacy with the series. "Tony very much appreciated what we have done in Final Destination 6 to give his character a perspective and a grounding in the real world," producer Craig Perry says. Orlando's Titanic attraction adds recovered necklace to artifact lineup
A necklace found deep in the Atlantic Ocean is now at home in Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, the Orlando attraction devoted to the story of luxury liner. The attraction, which operates on International Drive, is featuring the newly conserved item that was taken from the debris field of Titanic in 2000. The ship, on its maiden voyage from England and bound for New York City, sank after striking an iceberg in 1912. 'We've been recovering artifacts so long, and we've had the same things on display for so long, so to be able to bring something new to the public is a very big deal for us,' Tomasina Ray, president of RMS Titanic Inc. and director of collections, said after the jewelry was revealed. Attractions visitors will see the necklace in the 'Life Onboard' room, which showcases items that passengers would have used on the ship. The necklace is made up of black glass hearts that experts think were meant to imitate jet, a rare gemstone used in mourning jewelry. The artifact 'is not just an object, it's a symbol,' Ray said. 'It speaks to the power of conservation and the profound loss of history that occurs if we're not able to recover these artifacts among the large wreckage of Titanic on the ocean floor.' The piece initially was unrecognizable as sediment fused with it while resting about 2.5 miles below sea level for almost nine decades. The discovery and recovery process was meticulous, Ray said. SeaWorld Orlando: New emperor penguins set for Florida debut 'It's using little tools and little picks and just kind of pulling away the material and the layers until you find something, and then you excavate around that,' she said. 'You just keep moving through the piece until you find what you have. And this literally unwound itself, piece by piece, bead by bead.' Officials have not tied the necklace with any of the 3,700 people aboard Titanic, Ray said. 'We always try. … We learn new things all the time because there are new resources that come online, there are new resources and information that other people discover that helps us find new things,' she said. 'This was found pretty much isolated with just fragments of little bits of paper that we can't read and little pieces of metal,' Ray said. 'We're currently going through insurance claims, but if the person didn't survive, they can't make a claim. … So it's very unlikely that we will ever know.' The I-Drive attraction full-scale room recreations of the ship and galleries featuring first class area, a cafe and the grand staircase. It holds almost 200 artifacts that were recovered from the wreck site. The finale including a a 2-ton section of the ship's hull dubbed 'The Little Piece.' That artifact, moved into the attraction in 2012, also has conservation underway, fending off corrosion. ('The Big Piece,' weighing 15 tons, is in the company's Las Vegas location.) 'As part of our ongoing commitment to the conservation and stewardship of these artifacts, everything that we bring up from the ocean floor, we maintain and we care for in perpetuity, so that it's here for generations to come,' Ray said.
