Fremantle Dockers Caleb Serong takes Mark of the Year contender with horizontal grab against Gold Coast

West Australian2 days ago

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Caleb Serong.
The Fremantle star has taken a brilliant flying mark, challenging Superman as he got completely horizontal in the air during the club's clash with Gold Coast.
The gun midfielder took a slips-like catch inside 50 for the Dockers, but missed the following set shot, on the eve of the first quarter at People First Stadium on Saturday.

As young teammate Matthew Johnson danced onto his right foot and put the ball into space, Serong soared to take a potential Mark of the Year contender.
The grab was even more impressive given the conditions on the Gold Coast, with heavy rainfall making the ball extremely slippery and the terrain just as tricky for the Dockers and Suns.
Despite Serong's kick missing to the left, the Dockers took a strong 20-point lead into the first break.

Melbourne v St Kilda, West Coast v Geelong AFL Round 12: Live updates, SuperCoach scores, teams

There are just two Sunday games in round 12 as the first weekend of the mid-season byes wraps up. But there is plenty to play for on the field, and in SuperCoach. Injuries and a host of missing bye players have made for a challenging round, but another huge score from Max Gawn could paper over a whole lot of cracks. And it could be on the cards – Gawn, who has a five-round average of 157 – scored 180 points the last time he faced the Saints, in round 11 last year. Melbourne can keep its season alive with a win, while the Saints are searching for their first win since they humbled Fremantle in round 8. In the final game of the round, Geelong travels west to face West Coast at Optus Stadium. Follow all the action and SuperCoach news in the live blog below. Bolton shines as Dockers rain on Suns' parade

Fremantle star Shai Bolton kicked three goals to get one over former mentor Damien Hardwick, inspiring his side to a hard-fought 11-point win against fast-finishing Gold Coast. Bolton showcased his elite talent in wet and wild conditions, leading the Dockers to a precious 11.9 (75) to 9.10 (64) victory at People First Stadium on Saturday. Highlighted as Fremantle's 'barometer' by ex-Richmond boss Hardwick in the build-up to the game, Bolton shone in the front half with 20 disposals. But his late tackle on Nick Holman was every bit as important, directly leading to Jye Amiss's match-sealing goal in the final 30 seconds. The Dockers had led by a game-high 20 points in the final quarter, but saw the lead trimmed to five as Gold Coast gave them a huge scare. A third straight victory put the Dockers (7-5) into the top eight, while the Suns (8-3) suffered just their third loss of the season – and their first on home turf. Caleb Serong (27 disposals, six clearances) and stand-in captain Andrew Brayshaw (30, five) were important for Fremantle, and Patrick Voss stood tall in attack with a career-best three goals and eight tackles. Luke Jackson (27 disposals, 20 hit-outs) was influential as a ruckman, and Jordan Clark (30 touches) was composed in defence. Gold Coast captain Noah Anderson was immense with game-high tallies of 39 disposals and 12 clearances.
