Thalassemia desk created at NADRA centre
SUKKUR:
A Thalassemia screening desk has been inaugurated at the NADRA centre in Sukkur on Saturday marking a significant step forwards the fight against the genetic disorder.
The desk, established in collaboration with the SBTA and NADRA, aims to provide timely diagnosis, prevention, and awareness about Thalassemia among the public.
The screening desk will offer Thalassemia testing facilities for pre-marital and general health check-ups, enabling early detection and proper guidance for potential patients.
It will also provide information on the causes, transmission, and prevention of Thalassemia, helping to reduce the prevalence of the disease in society.

Trilateral agreements signed: NADRA to implement digital tools in healthcare facilities across ICT, GB
ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Friday signed trilateral agreements to implement digital birth and death notification tools in healthcare facilities across Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). According to an official statement issue by the authority, digital tools will enable real-time registration of births and deaths at the point of occurrence. An agreement was signed at the GB Secretariat in Gilgit, linking GB's health facilities with NADRA and local CRMS sites managed by the Local Government and Rural Development Department. Another agreement was signed with the Ministry of National Health Services and the ICT Administration for Islamabad. Similar partnerships have been established in Sindh and Balochistan, as NADRA continues to expand the initiative nationwide. This initiative supports the modernisation of Pakistan's Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system under the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework and aligns with the government's 'Uraan Pakistan' digital agenda, it says. NADRA issues CNICs with lifetime validity for citizens
Listen to article The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new initiative offering lifetime Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) to Pakistani citizens who voluntarily pledge to donate their organs. These Smart National Identity Cards will carry a green heart symbol as a mark of humanitarian contribution. Eligible individuals aged 18 or above can obtain the marked Smart National Identity Card (SNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) by visiting any NADRA registration centre. Listen to article As major developed nations embrace cloud-based information systems that operate in real-time, Pakistan continues to grapple with a regressive, paper-heavy model plagued by inaccuracies and inefficiencies. In a world where data fuels development, our outdated system has long held us back. The consequences are starkest when it comes to recording the most basic human milestones — birth and death. Fortunately, NADRA has now taken a long-overdue step in the right direction. Its new initiative to digitise birth and death registrations directly at hospitals and healthcare facilities is a welcome move. By capturing data directly from the source, this system can dramatically improve accuracy and timeliness. It also supports the broader goals of the 'Udan Pakistan' programme, which aims to integrate technology into economic and civic life. But what of the thousands of children born at home remaining invisible to the state, and lives lost going unregistered for weeks, if not months. These lapses can easily distort national planning and cripple service delivery. Without reliable demographic data, how can we design effective health programmes, allocate educational resources, or even prepare for natural disasters? As the shift is made towards digitisation, such a system must be foolproof as well as inclusive. It must accommodate rural health units, integrate with mobile registration teams for home births and ensure connectivity with local governments. Otherwise, we risk reinforcing the very gaps we seek to eliminate. Let this be the beginning of a much-needed transition. Pakistan cannot afford to remain stuck in an analog past while the world moves to digital governance. The shift must be toward big data — not just digitised forms but interconnected, analysable datasets that can drive policymaking. Without it, Pakistan will continue to plan reactively, not proactively.
