KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)The UAE Under-17 manager Majed Salem Al Zaabi has sounded the bugle on ramping up preparations for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup, after the national team qualified for November's age-group showpiece in Qatar earlier this month in Saudi Arabia. The team clinched qualification following a 1-1 draw with Vietnam in the final Group B match of the Asian Cup qualifiers, held at King Fahd Stadium in Taif. That result, coupled with a resounding 2-0 victory over Australia, pushed the young Emiratis to four points – enough to secure a coveted ticket to the expanded tournament in Doha, where eight Asian teams made the cut in the 48-team tournament, apart from the hosts. The feat marked a significant milestone in the country's youth football development, having made the Finals for the fourth time after a long gap of 12 years."This qualification is a reward for the tremendous effort of the players, the technical staff, and the support of the federation," the manager has said. "But now the real work begins. Qualifying is just the first step – we must prepare in every possible way to be competitive at the World Cup."The team had a rocky start, with the UAE falling 4-1 to Japan in their opening match. However, under the leadership of Al Zaabi, the team rebounded with determination and tactical discipline to deliver the results they needed. And now the coach has emphasised the importance of learning from past campaigns as well as the qualifying tournament while aiming for new milestones. The UAE has made previous appearances in 1991, 2009, and 2013. Their most successful run came in 2009 in Nigeria, where the team reached the Round of 16."Our goal is not just to participate but to advance beyond the previous benchmarks. The expanded format gives us an opportunity, but we must improve in all aspects – physically, tactically, and mentally. We must prepare as if we are playing for the title," he added. The players received a warm welcome on arrival in Abu Dhabi. Social media buzzed with praise, with many fans expressing hope that this U-17 generation will emulate the golden era led by Mahdi Ali, which saw the UAE claim the Gulf Cup. Football pundits echoed those sentiments, noting the promise shown by the current crop to go all the way and feed the senior national team in the near future.
The U17 World Cup is expected to be one of the most competitive youth tournaments in history with its new format. For Salem and his boys, the road to Qatar now becomes one of preparation, ambition, and maturity beyond those soft ears.

Dubai to fifth edition of Asian Youth Para Games in December

The countdown to the 5th Asian Youth Para Games has officially begun as the host city contract was signed between Asian Paralympic Committee and Dubai Club for People of Determination, the local organising committee for the event. Majid Al Usaimi, the APC President, and Thani Juma Berregad, Dubai Club for People of Determination Chairman, signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations, at the APC headquarters in Dubai. To be held under the patronage of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the 5th Asian Youth Para Games will take place from December 7 to 14 in Dubai, UAE, featuring 11 sports. This is the second time Dubai will host the Games – it first hosted the Asian Youth Para Games in 2017. During the signing ceremony, Al Usaimi thanked Sheikh Mansoor for his commitment to the continuation of the Asian Youth Para Games, after the original host city Tashkent was unable to go ahead with staging games, originally scheduled for October. The APC President emphasised that this stance demonstrates the UAE and Dubai's commitment to supporting the People of Determination across all sectors. Al Usaimi also thanked the Dubai Club for People of Determination's initiative to host this important Asian event, noting that the club has taken numerous stances under difficult circumstances, demonstrating its full commitment to the development of the international Paralympic movement. He pointed out that the responsibility for continuing the Youth Games in the world's largest continent is one of the major objectives of the Asian Paralympic Movement. 'Our young athletes are among the most important investments on the Asian continent and globally. And we, at the Asian Paralympic Committee, seek to ensure the sustainability of our work to provide the best services for people of determination at the highest quality to achieve the organisation's goals.' "In this context, the Asian Paralympic Committee has raised the slogan to develop players from youth to professionals, charting a clear path to achieve this through various competitions throughout the season and training the cadres who work with the players, including classifiers and coaches." For his part, Berregad expressed his happiness at the Dubai Club for People of Determination hosting this important Games, indicating that they are up to the challenge of presenting an exceptional championship despite the short duration of the event. "Over the years, the UAE and Dubai have gained a prestigious status by hosting many major and successful regional and international sporting events. They continue to enhance this image, offering the world amazing experiences and leaving an exemplary impact on the Asian stage." "We are committed to delivering an exceptional edition by putting forth our utmost efforts to make the Games the strongest and best," he added.

All eyes on Olaroiu to spark UAE's World Cup bid

4 June 2025 00:11 KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)The national football team faces a pivotal moment in the fourth round of the Asian qualifying to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup under the guidance of newly appointed manager Cosmin Romanian has been parachuted into the role following the dismissal of Paulo Bento, with the UAE aiming to secure a spot in the global tournament set to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United the tough task, the coach is also the best placed to pin hopes of winning a qualification berth because the manager has coached three UAE clubs during 10 years of stay in the country. Even Olaroiu has acknowledge he picked up the posting because of his desire to "give back" for his deep-rooted connection to the UAE, both professionally and appointment comes after a successful tenure with Sharjah, where he led the club to victory in the AFC Champions League Two, marking his 14th trophy in the region. "I have a very difficult mission," Olaroiu acknowledged following Sharjah's triumph coming days after losing in the UAE President's Cup final against Shabab Al Ahli, another club he has coached."I know the big responsibility that I have. I have to pay back the hospitality this country has given me and my family. I have learned a lot of things in this country and have made myself a better person with a better vision of life. I have to pay back, which is why I accepted this mission."The UAE's path to World Cup qualification is challenging. Currently third in Group A, they trail group leaders Iran and second-placed Uzbekistan, with two matches remaining. The top two teams from each group earn automatic qualification, while the third and fourth-placed teams advance to further play-off Iran are through and Uzbekistan are four points ahead of UAE, the national team can still upset Uzbekistan whom they play on Thursday evening at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Uzbekistan, under coach Timur Kapadze, need only a draw in Abu Dhabi to secure their first-ever World Cup berth. A loss for the UAE would leave them into the grind of potentially two complicated final rounds of play-offs for third- and fourth-placed teams from this Olaroiu remains resolute. "Of course, I have the dream to participate in the World Cup. I will do my best to do that, and I think this fantastic nation deserves it," he stated. "The way this country has developed, the way they have grown up in sport, they deserve to participate in the World Cup. I hope we can do it."The final group match against Kyrgyzstan on June 10 will further determine the UAE's fate. If UAE beat Uzbekistan and the latter lose to Qatar, then even a draw against Kyrgyzstan should see UAE take the automatic second-place berth on better goal Uzbekistan's road can become tougher if they lose to UAE because they will be facing Qatar, who have also changed their coach and gone for the experienced Spanish stalwart Julen Lopetegui. Having replaced compatriot Luis Garcia, Lopetegui responded to a question if Qatar is looking at him for the long-term, by saying: "The long-term vision, for now, is the 5th of June," Lopetegui said to local media. "Then, it will be the 10th of June, that's how football works." Just like Lopetegui, Olaroiu is also looking to focus at the game in hand. Sporting a rare half-grin on his face after a training session at Al Jazira's Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium down the road from the match venue, the coach called upon the fans to come out in large numbers. "It is a very important night for UAE football and we need all your support and, Inshallah, we will bring home the most important result for us," Olaroiu said.
