Singapore ex-actor Ian Fang bows as he begins 40-month jail term for sex with minor, says hopes to be ‘a better version' of himself
SINGAPORE, June 16 — Singapore former actor Ian Fang has reportedly surrendered himself to the State Courts today to undergo his 40-month prison sentence.
The Straits Times reported that Fang arrived with a woman said to be his mother.
'I definitely will try my best to be a better person, a better version of myself. It is an expensive and very huge mistake that I need to pay off.
'I believe it will definitely make me a better person. I really hope that everyone can give me a chance, to show that I can be the person you want me to be,' he was quoted saying, bowing afterwards.
Last month, the actor whose real name is Fang Wei Jie, admitted to three counts of sexual penetration of a minor, while three additional similar charges were taken into consideration, along with one count each of obstruction of justice and stalking.
The offences occurred after the pair met at an entertainment event, with Fang then working as an acting teacher at a child modelling school catering to students aged four to 14.
Fang has since left acting and maintained a low profile before his legal troubles came to light.
In Singapore, statutory rape applies only to a sexual act with a minor below 14 under Section 376A of the Penal Code.

Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture (Madpet) pointed out that the first phase of Suhakam's inquiry had just ended on June 12, and the second phase will be held from June 23 to 26. However, it said Mariati's term as Suhakam commissioner expires on June 22, alongside those of fellow office-holders Noor Aziah Awal, Nordin Ibrahim, K Ragunath, Chew Chee Ming, Hasnal Rezua Merican Habib Merican and Nazira Abdul Rahim. Noor Aziah is serving her second and final term as a Suhakam commissioner while the rest, including Mariati, are eligible to be appointed for a second term. 'Given that Mariati's term ends soon, the public inquiry is at risk if she is not reappointed for another three-year term. 'If not, the public inquiry may have to start again, as all three commissioners on the panel need to hear and consider all evidence and make a decision independently,' Madpet said in a statement. The other two on the panel investigating the incident at Taiping prison, which is said to have led to the death of one inmate and injury to several others, are Suhakam chairman Hishamudin Yunus and commissioner Farah Nini Dusuki. Madpet urged Putrajaya not to extend the tenures of Hasnal and Nazira, citing their roles as active members and leaders in Umno. Hasnal is the Selayang Umno chief while Nazira heads the women's wing of the Kulim Umno division. The NGO also suggested that the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act be amended so that a Suhakam commissioner's term of office is raised from three years to six, with no provision for reappointment or term extension. 'This will strengthen the independence of Suhakam commissioners, who are expected to act without fear or favour for human rights. They should not be afraid of angering the prime minister or the government of the day,' it said. It also said the role of the prime minister and government in the appointment of Suhakam commissioners should be removed and allocated instead to Parliament or another independent body.

Melaka local authority director arrested over alleged misuse of RM50mil

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The director of the finance department of a local authority in Melaka has been arrested on suspicion of abusing his power by using RM50 million of the authority's funds to invest in shares. He is believed to have committed the offence between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife, who works at a bank, as the investment agent for share investments amounting to nearly RM50 million. Bernama reported a source as saying that a preliminary investigation suggested that the suspect may have used public and trust funds without the necessary approval. According to the source, the man, in his 50s, was detained at about 1pm today when he provided a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Melaka. Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009. He said the suspect would be brought to the Ayer Keroh magistrates' court in Melaka tomorrow to be remanded.

(Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : A former director of the Melaka youth and sports department pleaded not guilty today in the Ayer Keroh sessions court to submitting a false claim and accepting bribes. Khairul Adri Rosli, 51, was charged with submitting a payment voucher for RM126,100 for the supply and installation of concrete imprints around the tennis and petanque court walkways at the Melaka youth and sports complex. The voucher was found to contain false particulars as the work was not carried out according to the quoted specifications. Bernama reported that he allegedly committed the offence at the Melaka youth and sports department office on Dec 8, 2023. The charge, under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, provides a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of no less than five times the amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. Khairul also faces four charges of soliciting bribes totalling RM8,000 from a company owner linked to his official duties, between Sept 25, 2023 and June 25, 2024 in Melaka Tengah. The charge, under Section 165 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine or both. MACC deputy public prosecutor Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari proposed bail to be set at RM25,000 on all charges, with the additional conditions that the accused surrender his passport to the court and report monthly to the Melaka MACC office. Khairul's lawyer T Gajendran asked for a lower bail amount as his client is currently serving in a different department and would be suspended from duty starting today, receiving only half his salary. Judge Elesabet Paya Wan granted bail of RM20,000 with one surety on all charges. She set Aug 15 for mention of the case.
