Nearly half a ton of cocaine seized at Istanbul airport
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish customs confiscated nearly half a ton of cocaine at Istanbul airport, the government said on Saturday.
'Following the technical analysis and targeting studies, a cargo shipment originating from abroad and transiting through our country was examined in detail. The cargo shipment consisting of 40 boxes prepared for the cocaine-type drug trade weighing 455.2 kilos was seized,' read a statement from the Ministry of Trade.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the ministry.
The statement did not reveal the shipment's origin or final destination, but it was flagged during routine checks and underwent a thorough inspection, local media reported.
Turkey is becoming a transit hub for the cocaine trade into Europe.
'Turkish criminal networks - already key players in the heroin trade - appear to have found new ways to exploit the country's minimal resilience to organized crime, working with Latin American and Balkan groups to keep up with the escalating global demand for cocaine,' according to a 2023 report from the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.

Israel deports Greta Thunberg after intercepting Gaza-bound aid boat
Tel Aviv – Israel said campaigner Greta Thunberg left the country on a flight to Sweden via France on Tuesday, after she was detained along with other activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid boat. Of the 12 people on board the Madleen carrying food and supplies for Gaza, five French activists were taken into custody after they refused to leave Israel voluntarily. Israeli forces intercepted the boat, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, in international waters on Monday and towed it to the port of Ashdod. They were then transferred to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, the foreign ministry said. 'Greta Thunberg just departed Israel on a flight to Sweden (via France),' Israel's foreign ministry said on its official X account on Tuesday, along with a photo of the activist sitting on board a plane. Five French activists who were also aboard the Madleen were set to face an Israeli judge, the French foreign minister said. 'Our consul was able to see the six French nationals arrested by the Israeli authorities last night,' Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on X. 'One of them has agreed to leave voluntarily and should return today. The other five will be subject to forced deportation proceedings.' In the early hours of Tuesday, Israel's foreign ministry said the activist group had arrived at Ben Gurion airport to 'return to their home countries'. 'Those who refuse to sign deportation documents and leave Israel will be brought before a judicial authority,' it said on X. The vessel carrying French, German, Brazilian, Turkish, Swedish, Spanish and Dutch activists had the stated aim of delivering humanitarian aid and breaking the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory. – Dire humanitarian conditions – Israel's interception of the Madleen about 185 kilometres (115 miles) west of the coast of Gaza, was condemned by Turkey as a 'heinous attack' and Iran denounced it as 'a form of piracy' in international waters. Dozens of people have been killed near GHF distribution points since late May, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 54,927 people, the majority civilians, have been killed in the territory since the start of the war. The UN considers these figures reliable. Out of 251 taken hostage during the Hamas attack, 54 are still held in Gaza including 32 the Israeli military says are dead.

Turkiye escalates in Iraqi Kurdistan despite PKK's dissolution
Shafaq News/ Turkish military operations in Iraqi Kurdistan escalated in May, rising by 143% compared to April, according to data from the Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT). The surge in attacks came shortly after the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) announced its organizational dissolution on May 7, a step taken in response to a peace appeal issued in February by the group's imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan. CPT documented a total of 510 Turkish attacks throughout the month, all within Duhok Province. The breakdown includes 458 artillery bombardments, 36 airstrikes, and 16 helicopter assaults. Of these, 98% took place in al-Amediya district, with only 2% recorded in Zakho. May 7—the day the PKK formally announced its dissolution—also marked the highest number of Turkish attacks in a single day this year, with CPT recording 94 separate strikes within 24 hours. Compared with March, the volume of Turkish operations in May represented a 332% increase. The concentrated targeting of al-Amediya aligns with Turkiye's broader strategy to establish a security buffer along its southern border. As part of this effort, CPT reported the construction of a new Turkish military base beginning May 30 in the village of Galy-Balinda, located in the al-Amediya district. Since the start of 2025, more than 1,000 Turkish bombardments and helicopter strikes have been conducted across the Kurdistan Region. At least nine civilian casualties have been confirmed during this period, including three fatalities and six injuries.

Turkish-PKK clashes ignite farmlands in Duhok, Kurdistan
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, fires broke out in Mount Gara in northern Duhok province, Kurdistan Region, as a result of clashes between Turkish forces and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK.) Eyewitnesses told Shafaq News that the flames destroyed thousands of dunams of agricultural land and forested areas, causing significant material losses, adding that civil defense teams and firefighting vehicles have been unable to reach the area due to the tense security situation. Despite the PKK's dissolution, a member of the Community Peace Builders Team revealed on May 30 that the Turkish military carried out 128 artillery attacks.
