Will and Levi Ashcroft play major roles in Brisbane's win over Gold Coast

News.com.au05-05-2025

As happy as Will Ashcroft was to win the man-of-the-match medal named after his father in Brisbane's latest QClash win over Gold Coast, the star midfielder was just as delighted about the performance of his younger brother Levi in the Lions' 17-point victory.
In the 28th match between Queensland's two AFL clubs, the Lions saluted for the 21st time, winning 9.12 (66) to 7.7 (49) at the Gabba on Sunday night.
The final scoreline flattered the Suns, who kicked the final three goals of the game in the dying stages of the fourth quarter when the contest was well and truly over.
Will was superb in Brisbane's win, collecting a game-high 34 possessions, including nine clearances, a part of the match the Lions dominated.
'They pride themselves on that (the midfield battle), and we knew it was already going to be like that, and then when the weather set in a little bit, we knew it was going to be hotly contested in clearance battle,' Will, 20, said.
'We went to work on that at training this week. The defensive side of the game and the contest, we knew that was going to be where it was won and lost.'
With an individual performance that was truly worthy of best-on-ground honours, Will said it was 'pretty cool' to win the Marcus Ashcroft Medal.
'To win it in my third QClash is a pretty cool feeling,' he said.
Another key contributor in Brisbane's win was 18-year-old Levi, who secured 29 possessions in his maiden QClash appearance.
'How Levi performed and how he's building in his (debut) season, I'm really impressed with that and proud of that,' Will said.
Will also said the Lions' bid for back-to-back premierships was showing 'promising' signs.
'Something we speak about often is constant improvement. That's something that I personally have always gone to work on around good form or poor form … always trying to be curious and find different ways and avenues to get better,' he said.
'That's what we'll continue to do. We're not satisfied. We're in a pretty good spot, but we're trying to always improve and constantly get better in the things we're already good at and things we might want to clean up.'

Back to the future: Anzac team to wear a replica of 1989 strip against Lions

'There's talk about probably making sure we have enough avenue for Wallabies players to have access to that game, particularly as it's the last major match before the Test series starts. No doubt there's going to be some moves in that area to get some players in there, to be able to give them more game time, and [give] Joe [Schmidt] and the coaching team at the Wallabies more insight to what they're looking at in terms of their players. 'Make no mistake, we want to try and get that quality in, for sure, [but] in the right positions that allow us to expose the players that we want to. We don't want to close out any opportunities for our [Australian] guys in certain positions. So, those discussions will be ongoing, and we need to be fluid right to the last minutes.' With the AUNZ game scheduled as the last tour game before the first Test in Brisbane a week later, the Lions will almost certainly deploy the first-choice team they intend to use at Suncorp Stadium. When putting the 2025 tour schedule together, the Lions management were at pains to say they didn't want to play a quasi fourth Test against an Australia 'A' side. In a hard-fought and feisty clash in 2001, an Australia A side coached by Eddie Jones rolled the Lions in Gosford, and several other tour matches also saw the Lions cop mountains of aggression and physicality from the Australian state sides. Though it may have a festival vibe, Kiss said there would be a huge intensity to the AUNZ-Lions clash and the hosts will also be looking to do their part to help the Wallabies a week later. 'I think if you look at what the possibilities could be in terms of personalities in that squad, there's going to be a lot of competitive people there. They'll want to do something special themselves,' Kiss said. 'I can't see anything but a super competitive battle, really. They're going to be loaded. They're very physical, very talented right across the squad. We'll do our best to get out there and bash them, for sure. 'We want to make sure we make it an enjoyable experience, but get out there and make sure we do a job that can soften the Lions up a bit for us.' Menawhile, Reds five-eighth Tom Lynagh has suffered a broken finger, throwing his involvement in tour matches against the Lions into doubt and potentially limiting his chances of playing in the Test series. Lynagh picked up a finger fracture as the Reds' Super Rugby campaign ended last week and is facing a three- to four-week recovery, which will see him racing the clock to be fit to play for Queensland against the Lions on July 2, or for the Wallabies against Fiji on July 6. Loading There is confidence Lynagh's injury is not major, and he will be fine by the start of the Wallabies-Lions Test series on July 19. But sitting behind Noah Lolesio, at least, in the pecking order of Wallabies five-eighths, Lynagh's hopes of winning the No.10 jersey for the first Test could potentially rest on a standout performance for the Reds against the Lions. The AUNZ game could also be an opportunity for a final audition, but Kiwi superstar Richie Mo'unga is set to also play in the game as a marquee attraction in the No.10 role.

AFL: Oscar McInerney to return for Brisbane in the reserves

Lions coach Chris Fagan wants Oscar McInerney to play a game in the reserves before deciding if Brisbane's first-choice ruckman's recovering body is up to the rigours of AFL football McInerney, who has been nursing back and other niggling injuries, is set to miss a fifth straight top-flight match on Saturday after again being named among the emergencies for Brisbane's clash with the GWS Giants at the Gabba. However, the 30-year-old big man will play for the Lions' VFL team on Sunday against the GWS reserves at Springfield. But Fagan has taken a different approach with two other fit-again players in defender Brandon Starcevich and forward Sam Day, who have both been brought straight back into the Lions' AFL team after longer periods on the sidelines than McInerney with respective concussion and hamstring problems. Brisbane ruckman Oscar McInerney must prove his body is up to the rigours of the AFL. Picture:'Oscar is an emergency for the AFL team, so if we needed him (on Saturday), he could play, but if we don't need him, he'll have a run in the reserves on Sunday just to see how he pulls up from all his various things,' Fagan said on Friday. 'If he gets through that, then he's back in line for proper consideration for the (AFL) team. 'We just want to see how his body pulls up after a game. The last time he played (against North Melbourne on May 11), his body couldn't get through the game for various reasons, so he and we want to make sure that's the case. 'He'd be frustrated, but he's grateful for the time off, and I know his body feels as good as it's felt in a long time … but you don't really know until you get into a game. 'We're just hopeful that once he gets into a game, that he can pull up well, and then we can keep moving forward.' While not yet certain about McInerney, Fagan was confident that both Starcevich and Day were ready for an AFL return. Starcevich's only match this season was Brisbane's four-point win over Sydney on March 15 when he suffered a third concussion in the space of eight months. 'He's been pretty close to being right for a few weeks,' Fagan said. 'He's done a great training block and I've never seen him look so fit. 'He's had plenty of time for his brain to get better. He's gone through all the protocols and tests that he could. 'I basically let him do what he needed to do for him to put his own hand up when he was ready. 'It's been a little bit elongated because he had about a month where he couldn't train, and he needed to recondition again so that he could be ready to play AFL footy. 'That's been what the slow part of the process has been.' Brandon Starcevich will return on Saturday for the Brisbane Lions. Picture:Day hasn't played since injuring his hamstring in Brisbane's 17-point QClash win over his former club Gold Coast on May 4. 'It's good to have him back. I felt like our forward line was functioning really well when he was part of the team,' Fagan said of the ex-Sun who came to Brisbane in the off-season following the retirement of premiership-winning forward Joe Daniher. 'He doesn't kick many goals, but he does a lot of work that helps others kick goals, so we think his experience will help us in this game.' The Lions are aiming to bounce back from their five-point loss to Adelaide last Friday, while the Giants are searching for consistency, having been up and down this season with a record of seven wins and six losses. The Giants are also chasing revenge after the Lions fought back from 44 points down in the third quarter to end GWS' finals campaign last season with a five-point win at Engie Stadium. 'They're a very, very good team, and we're more than aware of that,' Fagan said. 'We had some tough battles with them last year. We were lucky to win that final. It was a miraculous comeback. We wouldn't want to be doing that (on Saturday). 'They've got an exceptionally talented team, and they can beat any team in the competition on their day, but so can we, so it'll make for a good clash.' Fagan said the Lions were preparing for Giants star Toby Greene to play, with GWS expected to make a decision on his availability just hours before the game after he suffered a corked left hip/glute injury in his team's 16-point loss to Port Adelaide last Saturday. 'We'll just have to wait and see what happens when the team sheets come out, but we're planning for Toby to be in,' the Lions coach said. 'He's a very good player, so that's the best thing to do, and we'll just adjust if need be.' Marco Monteverde Sports reporter Marco Monteverde is a Brisbane-based sports reporter for NCA Newswire.
