Tamil media practitioners urged to stay informed, support accurate dissemination of govt policies
PORT DICKSON: Tamil media practitioners must keep abreast of the latest technological trends and stay informed to ensure government policies and initiatives are communicated accurately and effectively to the Tamil-speaking community, said Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran.
He said this could be achieved through participation in training and upskilling programmes such as those organised by the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR).
'The Creativity and Innovation in Tamil Media Content Development course by IPPTAR here today, for example, offers exposure to essential techniques that empower Tamil media professionals. Those interested can reach out to IPPTAR for similar opportunities.
'We do hope such training would enhance the participants' capabilities to produce more meaningful news and ensure the Tamil-speaking public is well informed about national policies,' he told Bernama after officiating the closing of the three-day course, which ran from May 14 to 16 and involved 18 participants from online, private, and government media.
Also present was IPPTAR Head of Academic Division, S. Kumaran, who noted that this was the first course of its kind tailored for the Indian community, aimed to expose the participants to mobile journalism (MoJo) tools and techniques for producing content quickly and efficiently using mobile technology.
'This course represents a paradigm shift for many participants who have never attended such training before. The MoJo session empowered them to refine and enhance their existing skills,' he said.
Kumaran added that the course also featured a session on journalistic ethics and responsibility, conducted by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief, Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, which was crucial for helping participants understand how to create factually accurate and responsible content.
Meanwhile, he said IPPTAR plans to turn the course into an annual event, with more targeted series in the future.
'These 18 participants will act as ambassadors to promote IPPTAR's programmes. Through their feedback, we'll learn more about the needs of Indian media practitioners and can design future course series accordingly. This course is essentially our pilot project,' he added.
A participant, R. Gunadharmila Devi, 34, from the Department of Information's Social Media and New Media Division, found the course highly beneficial, particularly for those working in content creation.
'This course taught us practical methods for delivering information to the public, like using infographics, and ensuring the accuracy of our reports. Honestly, three days isn't enough. Young professionals should take the initiative to join such programmes,' she said.

Local Fishermen Should Benefit From BDIFIP Project
BAGAN DATUK, June 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for deep-sea resource harvesting licences under the Bagan Datuk International Fishery Industrial Park (BDIFIP) to be awarded to local communities, especially those from Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the Fisheries Department could work with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) to identify potential local operators who could be granted licences under the RM2 billion project. The Bagan Datuk MP added that he would work with financial institutions to ensure eligible fishermen receive assistance or loans, thereby ensuring that the benefits of the project are shared fairly between foreign investors and the local community. 'This is how we create balance, so that Malaysians, especially those in Perak, are not left with just low-paying jobs of RM1,700, watching others benefit from the project,' he said at the BDIFIP pre-launch ceremony here today. He also expressed hope that local workers at BDIFIP would not be paid minimum wages while foreign investors offer significantly higher salaries for similar roles in their home countries. 'Do not exploit the hard work of our local youth. Fair wages must be ensured, especially for those with skills and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM). 'I will personally monitor the progress of this industrial zone and ensure all timelines are fully met,' he said. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the exchange of an agreement between MB Inc. Perak and Younchang Engineering & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Younchang Engineering and MingCheng Group Co Ltd, paving the way for broader international collaboration in the project's investment ecosystem. Earlier, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the BDIFIP project, involving investments of more than RM2 billion, will be developed in phases starting in 2027 across a 126.4-hectare site. Govt urged to assist local media industry in facing current challenges - Sabah editor

KUALA LUMPUR (June 14): The government has been urged to consider proactive measures to help the country's media industry, which is currently in a critical stage in facing major challenges. Utusan Borneo Sabah editor-in-chief Datuk Lichong Angkui said competition from social media and global digital platforms, declining advertising revenue and changing reading patterns of the people have caused media companies' income to shrink, while operating costs continue to rise. 'Proactive measures such as financial incentives, digital transformation grants and strategic collaborations could enable local media to remain relevant and competitive,' he said in his speech as a media representative at the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration here on Saturday. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics, the prestigious event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Regarding the theme of HAWANA 2025, Lichong said it reflects the current reality of the world of journalism which is increasingly changing due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology which also raises questions of ethics, authenticity of information and social responsibility of journalists in assessing, filtering and presenting news. The HAWANA 2025 celebration is organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, with the aim of recognising the role and contribution of media practitioners in national development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players.-Bernama
