Real Madrid Legend Ancelotti Hails ‘Spectacular' FC Barcelona Star
Real Madrid legend Carlo Ancelotti said that FC Barcelona winger Raphinha is a "spectacular player" ... More after he helped Brazil beat Paraguay 1-0 in Sao Paulo on Tuesday night.
Real Madrid legend Carlo Ancelotti said that FC Barcelona winger Raphinha is a "spectacular player" after he helped Brazil beat Paraguay 1-0 in Sao Paulo on Tuesday night.
The victory was Ancelotti's first in his new role overseeing the five-time World Cup champions, and the fact it came in a qualifier meant that Brazil booked its place for the 2026 edition of the competition set to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Ancelotti said that he was 'very satisfied' with the attitude of the entire team post-match. "It's very difficult in football for everything to go well and in these 15 days everything has gone well," he said about his first fortnight in charge, which also took in a 0-0 draw away in Ecuador.
'Modern football is [played with] intensity with and without the ball. Pressure is very important because it does not allow the opponent to play as they want. The problem is that to press you have to run and sacrifice, have commitment and attitude, which the team has done in these two games' Ancelotti explained.
"Pressing is very important, but you have to run," he further added, remarking that Brazil played a 'good game' in the Arena Corinthians despite collectively taking its foot off the gas in the second half.
'But the match in general was very complete and very good… We came out very happy and now we look forward,' Ancelotti said, though he acknowledged that there is 'obviously' plenty of work ahead of him to improve Brazil before it competes at the 2026 World Cup.
There were individual compliments too, as Ancelotti praised Raphinha for is 'extraordinary physical work'.
'He's a spectacular player,' Ancelotti beamed, about a figure he faced no fewer than four occasions in El Clasico last season, with the Blaugrana number 11 coming out on top each time while racking up a number of goals and assists.
As is also the case with Vinicius Jr. and his Real Madrid exploits, Raphinha needs to replicate his strong FC Barcelona for for his country to win the hearts of Brazilians. There's a lot of expectation for them to do so at the next World Cup, where winning the hearts of a demanding Brazilian public is top of the agenda for Ancelotti and Co.

Tearful Trent Alexander-Arnold applauded by Liverpool fans after final appearance at Anfield
Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a brilliant send-off at Anfield as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy in his final appearance for the club, with the right-back warmly applauded by the crowd on an emotional afternoon. He has confirmed that he will depart his boyhood club this summer on a free transfer after helping Arne Slot's side to Premier League triumph, with the England international widely expected to join Real Madrid. Advertisement Alexander-Arnold replaced Conor Bradley at half-time on his last game for the club and was visibly emotional at the full-time whistle, hugging his teammates and manager as they celebrated a second league title of his spell at Anfield. FOLLOW LIVE: Liverpool lift Premier League title as party starts following emotional Anfield ceremony "I didn't know what to expect, stepping out at Anfield, after what had happened a few weeks ago,' admitted Alexander-Arnold. 'I wanted to play for the club one more time, he trusted me to go out there, the reception means more than anything for me. 'I've played hundreds of games, but I never felt more loved and cared for than today. I hope one day, the fans and supporters will be able to recognise the hard work I've done for the team, there wasn't a day I didn't think of the team. Advertisement 'From six years old to now, 20 years is a long time, I've loved every single minute of it, the academy to the first team, it's been an honour and a privilege. It's all I've ever known, it's… Alexander-Arnold has been strongly criticised by sections of the Liverpool support despite making more than 350 appearances for the club and making clear his desire to seek a new challenge. Home fans voiced their displeasure when he was introduced against Arsenal two weeks ago but the reception was considerably warmer as he was brought off the bench by Slot at half-time on the final day against Crystal Palace, and he was applauded loudly as he came out to collect his winner's medal and lift the trophy after the game. The 26-year-old has won two domestic titles and the Champions League during his time at Anfield, establishing himself as a key figure under Jurgen Klopp. The German manager expressed his frustration last week at the decision by fans to boo Alexander-Arnold. (Getty Images) "I don't want to tell you what you have to think. I can tell you what you think is wrong," Klopp said. "I don't tell you you should not be angry, you should not be disappointed, I tell you don't forget. This club doesn't forget. Advertisement "I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I switched the telly [television] off. Honestly, I could not have been more disappointed at this moment." Bradley, who has broken into the first team over the last two seasons, appears set to vie with Jeremie Frimpong to take Alexander-Arnold's place on the right of the back four next season. Frimpong has undergone a medical at Liverpool as he nears a switch from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee just short of £30m.

Manchester United confirm Matheus Cunha transfer from Wolves
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazil international, 26, moves after United met the £62.5million ($83.7m) release clause in his contract at Molineux. He has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further year. Advertisement 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player,' Cunha said. 'Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. 'I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.' Jason Wilcox, the club's newly-appointed director of football, added: 'Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. 'He has proved his ability to succeed in the Premier League as one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England during his time at Wolves, and before that in Spain and Germany. He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.' United prioritised a move for the Cunha this summer as they bid to bolster their front line, after Bruno Fernandes and Amad finished as the club's top scorers in the Premier League last season with just eight goals each. Cunha registered 17 goals in 36 matches in all competitions during the 2024-25 campaign, the most productive season of his career, despite missing six games through suspension. Analysis by Mark Carey Pushing his temperament to one side for a moment, there is little doubt that Cunha was Wolves' talisman this past season. Having barely played as an out-and-out striker, a return of 15 Premier League goals shows how much he has shouldered the attacking responsibility to help his side stave off relegation. Advertisement Playing as a left-sided No 10, Cunha's intelligence to drift into pockets of space will often mean that all attacking roads lead through the Brazil international. As well as his goal haul, no Wolves player created more open-play chances or generated a higher expected assists tally. Ideally, you would clone Cunha and play them both — one to craft the chance and the other to finish. United have witnessed his cheeky, South American flair first-hand after Cunha's Olimpico goal gave Wolves the lead in their Boxing Day clash this season. With Amorim's side in desperate need of a player to stitch their attack together, Cunha could be the perfect player to link the midfield and forward line — particularly given that he is adept at playing in a 3-4-2-1 system. Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, Cunha offers versatility, creativity, and goalscoring ability. The perfect combination for an elite forward. Analysis by Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell Cunha's familiarity with that position behind the striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation enhances his appeal for United, who want adaptable players but also need new signings to hit the ground running. His record against United inevitably colours perceptions too. He terrorised Erik ten Hag's side when running from midfield on the opening day of the 2023-24 season and, of course, scored direct from a corner past Andre Onana at Molineux this term. Cunha's ball-carrying is an important aspect to consider in an Amorim system. Usually, Amorim has a blend in his No 10s, one a creator, the other tasked with running beyond. Cunha could offer a bit of both, but his ability to go past opponents would add dynamism and, importantly, he can carry a scoring edge. There may be questions about temperament given his bans for reactions against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth, and his work off the ball at Wolves left some staff wanting more. But he has 12 and 15 Premier League goals in consecutive seasons, after getting two in 17 games while on loan for half a campaign, which is proof of his pedigree.

It's not the only surprise the ex-Liverpool right-back has dealt over the past couple days, with it yesterday being revealed that he would ditch his surname in favour of going by 'Trent' on the back of his shirt, accompanied by the number 12. Alexander-Arnold has revealed his thinking behind the name change, saying it was purely to avoid confusion rather than a personal rebrand. 'Quite an easy explanation,' he said at his press conference. 'I've always found when I travel to Europe that the whole name situation confuses a lot of people, as there being three names and double-barreled. 'People call me Arnold, people call me Alexander, people call me Alex, people call me Trent, there's a lot that goes on. So I thought let's make it easy, Trent on the back, and be known as Trent. That's my name so I guess that's what people will call me.' Advertisement Alexander-Arnold added that his dilemma over his future was never a question of where to go, admitting he would only ever leave Liverpool for Real Madrid. 'I knew for a long time that I would only leave Liverpool for Real Madrid,' he said. 'No one else. It was never a question of: where do I go? It was always: do I go to Madrid or not? Making that decision wasn't easy.' He also clarified that by saying he had waited a long time to complete a move away from Liverpool, he didn't mean he'd been seeking a new club for 'years'. "To clear that up, by waiting a long time I mean a couple of weeks,' he added. 'Not years. Advertisement "But I am very excited be here. Whether you support the club or not, you have to respect the trophies that the club win. No matter what, that has been always there for me. I have always admired players and clubs that win trophies." The 26-year-old arrives after 20 years at boyhood club Liverpool, joining for a fee of £10m to ensure his participation at the Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold was instrumental in Liverpool winning Europe's most prestigious trophy that year, and later added two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup to his accolade collection across 354 appearances. Advertisement The Liverpudlian left his home side on imperfect terms, with his first appearance after announcing his departure seeing him booed by the Anfield faithful. However, as he collected his Premier League winners medal on the final day of the season, a teary-eyed Alexander-Arnold was met with cheers in what was heart-warming send-off.
