Yahoo20-02-2025

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia State Police have released updated accident numbers from the latest winter weather that passed through the Southwest and Central Virginia regions.
Across the state, VSP said there have been 557 accidents as of 11 a.m. on February 20, resulting in a total of 48 injuries.
In the Staunton, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and South Boston areas there have been 110 crashes with 14 injuries.
Near Wytheville, there have been 56 crashes with 7 reported injuries.
There have currently been no deaths reported during this storm.
Officials continue to work on road conditions in winter storm
If you have to travel, drivers are reminded to do the following:
Use headlights. Increasing your visibility helps you to avoid slick and dangerous spots on the road, as well as helps other drivers see you better.
Slow your speed. Though state police work closely with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to identify problem areas on Virginia's highways during a winter storm, drivers still must drive for conditions. Slowing your speed gives you more time to safely react and avoid a crash. Drive your vehicle based on your ability to properly maintain control of your vehicle.
Don't tailgate. You need increased stopping distance on slick road surfaces. Give yourself more space between vehicles traveling ahead of you to avoid rear-end collisions.
Buckle Up. Most crashes that occur during winter weather are caused by vehicles sliding into guardrails, off the road, or other vehicles. Wearing your seat belt protects you from being thrown around the inside of your vehicle and suffering serious injury in a crash.
Check Your Vehicle. Make sure your vehicle is in good working order for the conditions. Fill up the tank in advance. Check windshield wipers, windshield wiper fluid, tire tread, battery life, etc.
Don't leave home without a window scraper, blanket, bottled water, snack, cell phone charger, and flashlight.
Virginia State Police said crews and officers continue to respond to emergencies and ask motorists to avoid travel, if possible, to allow VDOT and other responders the room to work on the roads.
For the latest in road conditions and updates, please call 511 on a cell phone or go online to the VDOT Virginia Traffic Information Website at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.

Pinpoint Weather: Scattered storms tomorrow with an isolated severe threat

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A few showers or storms may linger across the region into the overnight hours. Conditions will be mild with lows in the mid 60s under mostly cloudy skies. We will likely begin the day tomorrow with mostly cloudy skies and a few showers around. Into the afternoon, temperatures will warm up in the upper 70s to mid 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. With a frontal boundary still over the region, there will be the chance for hit or miss showers and storms in the afternoon to early evening hours. The best coverage for storms will likely be along and east of the blue Ridge. A few storms may be strong to severe as there is a Slight Risk (2/5) outlined over the Piedmont with a Marginal Risk (1/5) elsewhere. The main threat will likely be damaging wind gusts; however, hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The area with the best chance for severe storms will be from Central Virginia to Southside. As another front swings through, a few showers and storms will be possible late in the day Monday into the night where an isolated storm or two may be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts. A Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather is outlined over the region. Isolated storms remain possible on Tuesday before drier air moves in Wednesday into Thursday where weather conditions will just be warm with sun and clouds. Temperatures will remain warm in the 80s, getting close to 90 degrees by Friday. Storm chances return during the end of the week as well. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pinpoint Weather: Showers return, late-week storms possible

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A low-pressure system will move through the Carolinas, bringing more clouds and a few rain showers to Southwest and Central Virginia on Thursday. The region can expect mostly to partly cloudy skies on Thursday. Widely-scattered rain showers are possible, more so along and east of the Blue Ridge; however, not everyone will see rain. Rumbles of thunder are possible, but severe weather is not anticipated. Due to the additional cloud cover, temperatures won't be as warm. Highs will range from the mid-70s into the lower 80s. A frontal system will approach the region toward the end of the week. Isolated showers and storms are possible Friday afternoon and evening, with the best chance along and west of the Blue Ridge. A few storms may pack a punch, capable of producing gusty winds and hail. Temperatures will rise into the 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. Rain coverage will increase on Saturday as the front draws closer; scattered showers and storms will be possible area-wide. Isolated strong to severe storms may produce strong winds and hail, so stay weather-aware. Highs will be in the upper 70s and 80s. Partly cloudy skies will be overhead. Showers and thunderstorms remain possible into Sunday. When it's not raining, skies will be variably cloudy. Temperatures will warm up into the upper 70s and lower/middle 80s.
