Cambodia to inaugurate Chinese-renovated naval base

Al Arabiya18-03-2025

Cambodia will inaugurate a Chinese-renovated naval base next month, an army spokesman said Tuesday, with a Japanese warship expected to be the first to dock at the site that has drawn concerns from the United States.
Washington has said the Ream naval base, located off Cambodia's southern coast, could give Beijing a key strategic position in the Gulf of Thailand near the disputed South China Sea, which China claims almost in its entirety.
'The first phase of the Ream base is planned to be inaugurated on April 2,' Major General Thong Solimo, spokesman for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), told AFP.
RCAF's Commander-in-chief Vong Pisen told Japanese military attaché officials about the schedule during a meeting on Tuesday, Thong Solimo said, adding that Cambodia would 'allow a Japanese military ship to dock at the Ream base first' following the ribbon-cutting.
He added ships from other countries would also be allowed to dock at Ream.
Cambodia has long been one of China's staunchest allies in Southeast Asia, and Beijing has extended its influence over Phnom Penh in recent years.
Under former leader Hun Sen -- Prime Minister Hun Manet's father -- China has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure investment, while Washington's relationship with Phnom Penh has deteriorated.
Since 2022, China has been funding the renovation of the Ream naval base which was originally built partly using US funds.
Chinese warships first docked at the 363-metre (1,190-foot) pier in December 2023.
In December 2024, a US warship docked in Cambodia in the first American military port call in eight years.
A senior US army commander visited Cambodia in February and met with Hun Manet to 'expand bilateral defense ties.'
Cambodia is set to receive two warships from China to improve its defense capabilities.
Cambodian leaders have repeatedly denied that the base is for use by any foreign power.

Trump warns Iran of unmatched US military response amid Israel conflict

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Sunday that any attack on American interests would be met with overwhelming force, amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said: 'If we are attacked by Iran in any way, the full force of the American military will come down on you at levels never seen before.' Trump also noted the potential for an agreement between Iran and Israel to end the ongoing conflict but emphasized that the United States had no involvement in the Israeli military strikes that began Friday. His remarks came in response to repeated Iranian accusations that Washington played a role in Israel's strikes on nuclear and military targets across Iran, including the assassination of senior commanders and nine nuclear scientists. The Israeli government has acknowledged urging the US to support its military campaign, though Trump has not committed to direct involvement. Meanwhile, US officials have expressed concern over the potential for Iranian retaliation against American personnel or assets in the region, according to a report in The New York latest conflict erupted after Israel launched a series of strikes on multiple Iranian sites, including uranium enrichment facilities and military installations. Baghdad Asks Iran Not to Strike US Targets in Iraq

An Iraqi senior security official said that Baghdad asked Iran to avoid targeting US interests in Iraq amid mounting tensions between Israel and Tehran, according to Al-Arabiya. 'The request was made. They promised us positive things,' the official said. Despite the fact that Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran, Iraq is also a strategic partner of the US and even has approximately 2,500 US troops on its soil as part of an anti-extremist coalition. Israeli Iranian Tensions On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. US Denies Involvement On Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States was not involved in Israel's unilateral strikes on Iran, according to The New York Times. Rubio said Israel started the attacks and acted unilaterally based on its belief that the operation was necessary for self-defense. 'We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense,' Rubio said. He also warned Iran late Thursday not to respond to Israeli strikes by targeting American bases in the region. Importantly, the US military maintains a large fleet of warplanes, naval vessels as well as thousands of troops stationed at its bases in the region, including in Qatar and Bahrain. 'Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel,' Rubio added.
