Saint Francis holds press conference announcing changing of conferences, shift from D1 to D3 sports

Yahoo29-03-2025

LORETTO, Pa. (WTAJ) — During a press conference Friday afternoon, Saint Francis officially joined the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), days after the school announced it will be transitioning all of its sports programs from division 1 to division 3.
Joe Onderko, the Commissioner of the PAC, defended division three athletics during his welcoming speech, pushing back against those who consider it a step above high school sports.
'If you have not seen division three athletics lately, I believe you will find watching our teams compete, the level of competition and the level of play is likely higher than you expect,' Onderko said.
After the decision was made to move from division one to division three was announced on Tuesday, there has been strong feeling expressed from a number of current students and alumni. A Change.org petition has also been circulating online with over 2,700 signatures, urging the University to reconsider the change.
'As you can imagine my inbox is full right now,' Saint Francis President Father Malachi Van Tassell, said. 'From the alumni community, from the current campus community there's a lot of shock, a lot of disbelief, and a lot of can't believe we're doing this.'
Van Tassell said that Saint Francis athletics have always competed above their means against schools with more resources and have had success. However he said that a changing college athletics landscape has made it increasingly difficult for one of the smallest division one schools in the country to compete.
'It was NIL, it was the transfer portal, it was uncertainties in D1, or as I like to say D1 changed around us,' Van Tassell said.
The decision was announced one week after the Saint Francis men's basketball team was eliminated in the NCAA tournament. Since then multiple players now intend to enter the transfer portal, and longtime head coach Rob Krimmel has retired. No members of the athletic department were made available to speak during the press conference.
'I'm not asking student athletes or staff necessarily to agree with the decision, but I want them to know first and foremost that I'm here to help them to come to a good decision for their futures,' Van Tassell said.

Deion Sanders 'feeling well' but timing of return to Colorado campus unclear

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been away at his estate in Texas dealing with an unspecified health issue even as CU's annual slate of summer football camps got underway last week in Boulder. Sanders appeared at his CU summer camps in 2023 and 2024. Operating them is listed as one of the official duties in his employment contract with CU. His picture also is used by the university to advertise them. Advertisement But it's unclear when Sanders is returning to Boulder. On Sunday, his eldest son Deion Jr. appeared on a YouTube livestream from the family estate in Canyon, Texas, where he said his father was in his room and 'feeling well.' 'He'll tell y'all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,' Deion Jr. said on the livestream. He suggested that when they return to Boulder was open-ended. 'When we get back in Boulder, I don't know,' Deion Jr. said June 8. 'I'm waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I'll go. Until then, I'm gonna sit here with him.' Sanders, 57, also canceled a scheduled speaking engagement scheduled for June 8 in Florida. He canceled because of an "unavoidable last-minute scheduling change," according to The Foundation for Sickle Cell Research, whose symposium had advertised Sanders as its keynote speaker. The foundation instead replaced him with NBA legend Magic Johnson. Advertisement In 2023, issues related to blood clots in Deion Sanders' legs led him to miss a Pac-12 Conference media event in Las Vegas. He has been accompanied in Texas by CU athletic trainer Lauren Askevold, who has helped him with his legs since the issue got serious in 2021, including the amputation of two of his toes and the removal of the sides of his left calf. Sanders has been out of the media spotlight since the NFL draft in April and suggested it was related to a health issue but didn't say what exactly. He mentioned it on a podcast with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel in late May. 'I hope you're feeling better,' Samuel said to Sanders. Samuel then asked him if he ever tried fasting. Sanders responded by saying 'what I'm dealing with right now is at whole nother level' but said he's coming back after losing about 14 pounds. Advertisement Last week, CU hosted separate camps for high school football players and eligible high school graduates. CU also is scheduled to host a youth football camp this week before a women's football clinic on Thursday. The university didn't immediately respond to a message asking if Sanders would be appearing at this week's camp activities. Dolphins Second-Rounder Remains Unsigned in June

Dolphins Second-Rounder Remains Unsigned in June originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As of June 9, only two second-round picks from the 2025 NFL Draft have signed with their respective teams. Wide receiver Jayden Higgins signed his rookie deal with the Houston Texans on May 9; linebacker Carson Schwesinger followed suit with the Cleveland Browns three days later. Advertisement This means that offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea, whom the Miami Dolphins selected with the No. 37 overall pick, is among the 30 second-rounders who have yet to ink their rookie contracts. At the center of the NFL's latest contract-related trend is the concept of signing bonuses, which is the only condition of a rookie's contract that can be negotiated. The total value of each contract, as well as its average annual value (AAV), is already set in stone, per the league's collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The Texans and Browns, respectively, have since bucked previous trends by making Higgins' and Schwesinger's contracts fully guaranteed, marking the first instances of second-round picks being signed to such deals. As a result, unsigned second-rounders are likely leaning towards receiving more money upfront and are in active negotiations to be compensated similarly to Higgins and Schwesinger. University of Arizona offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea (OL36) answers questions at a press conference during the 2025 NFL Combine at Indiana Convention Musselman-Imagn Images The total value of Savaiinaea's rookie contract is $11,310,028, with an AAV of $2,827,507 across four seasons and a signing bonus of $4,865,477, according to contract data from Spotrac. Even though Savaiinaea has yet to put pen to paper, he has been present at the Dolphins' OTAs. Advertisement Before being drafted by the Dolphins, Savaiinaea played three seasons of college football at Arizona, where he started all 36 games he appeared in. He started 12 contests at right guard as a freshman in 2022, resulting in him picking up an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and a spot on Pro Football Focus' All-True Freshman Team. He subsequently earned another All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention nod in 2023 and an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention nod in 2024.
