George, Charlotte and Louis join royal family for VE Day commemorations
The Prince and Princess of Wales's children have joined the King, Queen and veterans to watch a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.
The procession of 1,300 members of the armed forces and Nato allies, past some of London's most famous buildings and monuments and ending at Buckingham Palace, commemorated the service of those who fought to bring peace to Europe and the rest of the world.
Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis made a rare public appearance with their parents William and Kate to see the spectacle which began a few minutes before they arrived at the royal box.
Charles and Camilla led the royal party sitting in the shadow of the Queen Victoria Memorial, along with the Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke of Kent.
Second World War veterans and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer were sitting nearby, and crowds lined The Mall, with some waiting since early morning to secure a spot to watch events.
Actor Timothy Spall read extracts from wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill's VE Day speech and 100-year-old RAF veteran Alan Kennett formally started the parade when he received the Commonwealth War Graves' Torch For Peace.
VE Day was declared on May 8 1945 and Mr Kennett learnt about the historic news in a cinema when a soldier drove a jeep into the venue and shouted: 'The war is over.'
The Mall was the setting for jubilant scenes that day, with the royal family playing a central role in the celebrations as crowds gathered at the gates of Buckingham Palace.
King George VI and the Queen Mother made eight balcony appearances and were joined by their daughters, Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) and Princess Margaret, who later famously slipped into the crowds in The Mall celebrating the end of hostilities.
George, 11, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, seven, were last seen together in public at the Christmas Day church service on the Sandringham Estate.
Louis, who during past public appearances has stolen the show, did not disappoint royal fans and was seen at one moment sticking out his tongue – a trademark gesture for the young royal.
He also held William's gold aiguillettes, the braided loops hanging from the shoulder of his RAF uniform, and appeared to touch his father's shoulder again, and also held out his hands palms up as if he was testing for rain, which later fell.
When the Waleses and their children took their seats they shook the hand of Royal British Legion veteran Bernard Morgan, who was sitting next to Kate, and he appeared to show her photographs.

The former couple split in December, with Zara quickly moving on with Louis. The two men were both due to take part in Soccer Aid tomorrow, but it was revealed exclusively by The Sun yesterday that the I'm A Celeb champ had pull out due to injury. However, before Sam was forced to quit, he was he was pictured training with Louis this week at Soccer Aid HQ in Tring, Herts, where the England and Rest of the World teams have been preparing for the match. After looking at the pictures in detail, a body language expert believes that Louis displayed a "playground mentality" towards Sam on the pitch. Expert Judi James said that while Sam was smiling and happy, and get along with the other players, One Direction star Louis seemed "glum" and "separate". She told The Mail: 'There seems to be more of a playground dynamic growing from the body language here. "Sam seems to be very much part of the core group, sitting central and being the center of their attention while Louis walks by looking glum at times and rather peripheral to the social interaction. "As the guys club around Sam, who looks deep in the discussion, Louis seems to glance over with a rather hard-looking stare. "His eye direction might not be exclusively aimed at Sam, but he does seem to be checking the group out with an unsmiling facial expression." Louis Tomlinson admits feeling nervous ahead of Soccer Aid as Zara's ex Sam Thompson awkwardly hovers behind him Continuing she said: "When the two men meet on the pitch there is an unsmiling, reflective-looking gaze from Louis. "This shouldn't be over-dramatized into any form of specifically directed 'hard stare' as his eye direction does not seem to be aimed directly at Sam, but there could be seen to be a hint of some kind of 'atmosphere' brewing here. "With his hands on his hips, Louis does look really down and perhaps rather uncomfortable." 7 The expert said that Louis appeared to 'distance' himself from his other team mates Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 7 Sam pulled out of Soccer Aid yesterday Credit: PA 7 Sam completed his Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid Unicef, running and cycling from Stamford Bridge in London to Old Trafford in Manchester Credit: Splash SAM QUITS SOCCER AID Meanwhile, yesterday The Sun exclusively revealed how Sam was no longer able to take part on Soccer Aid tomorrow. 'Their every move will be watched so it's a relief in some ways they won't be on the pitch together.' Kate returns to huge Trooping the Colour duty alongside King Charles
The Princess of Wales returned to her major Trooping the Colour duty alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla today. In her role as as Colonel of the Irish Guards she took her seat on the dais alongside the King and Queen to watch the spectacular military parade at Horse Guards Parade. Last year she was sat upstairs in the Major General's office to watch the display with her children after marking her return to duty following the start of her cancer treatment. Today, Kate arrived at Horse Guards Parade today in an Ascot Landau carriage alongside her three children. She dazzled in a turquoise Catherine Walker coat dress, a hat by Juliette Botterill, her Irish Guards Regimental brooch and a pair of earrings late that belonged to the late Queen before taking her seat on the parade ground. At last year's Trooping the Colour, Kate made a triumphant return, making her first official public appearance since she revealed she had received a cancer diagnosis. She took pride of place on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the RAF flypast standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the King. It came two months before she later revealed that she had finished her chemotherapy treatment and in January of this year she revealed that she is now in remission. The princess is still gradually returning to royal duties but has slowly been increasing her workload. However, it is the second time she has taken part in a major royal event in months after joing the Firm for commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Earlier this week, she visited the new V&A East Storehouse in London's Stratford to learn about its 'order an object' system where paintings, furniture, books and sculptures can be requested and a room set aside for viewing with staff. With a keen interest in the arts and a love of the natural world, she choose a number of items themed around nature, a large William Morris samples book, rolls of ornate textiles and a musical instrument for the private moment. Trooping the Colour sees more than 1,000 servicemen taking part in the military display who when not performing ceremonial duties are fighting soldiers. The colour – regimental flag – being trooped this year is the King's Colour of Number 7 Company, Coldstream Guards, a prestigious regiment known as the sovereign's bodyguard which is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year. In addition, today the King requested a minute's silence be observed in tribute to the 241 passengers and crew killed, and others affected, when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for Gatwick Airport came down on Thursday in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. Black armbands were also be worn by the head of state and senior royals riding in the ceremony, also known as the King's Birthday Parade, staged in Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King requested amendments to the Trooping the Colour programme 'as a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy'. In 2017, Trooping was held a few days after the Grenfell Tower blaze and the loss of life was marked by a minute's silence, a decision taken by Queen Elizabeth II. The King issued a written message soon after the Air India plane crash saying he was 'desperately shocked by the terrible events' and expressing his 'deepest possible sympathy'. He was kept updated about the developing situation on Thursday and it later emerged there was a sole survivor, UK national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.
