This July, Sotheby's Paris will offer collectors and admirers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to own the original Birkin—the very handbag designed for and with Jane Birkin herself, that would go on to define modern luxury.
For decades, the Birkin has held court as the most recognisable and elusive accessory on the planet. But before it became synonymous with waitlists and wealth, it was just a beautifully made black leather bag, crafted by Hermès in 1984 for a woman known for turning simple into chic. That exact bag will lead Sotheby's inaugural Fashion Icons auction in Paris on July 10, just as the world's style set descends on the capital for Haute Couture Week.
Exhibited publicly only a handful of times—from Sotheby's Paris galleries to their Hong Kong maison—the original Birkin is marked by seven unique design details that separate it from every iteration since.
While the first Birkin bags created by Hermès were 40 cm in size, and then by 35 cm in size, the original Birkin is a hybrid of the two sizes; It has the width and height of a Birkin 35 with the depth of a Birkin 40, with unique studs, zipper, hardware and the strap. A handmade prototype rich with patina and lived-in character, it is unmistakably Jane: practical, iconic, and a little bit rebellious. Before it goes under the hammer, the bag will appear in a rare public showing at Sotheby's New York galleries from June 6-12.
'It's incredible to think that a bag designed as a practical solution has grown into such a defining emblem of luxury,' says Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's Global Head of Handbags and Fashion. 'The prototype that started it all carries a soul and legacy that no other handbag can claim.'
'There are rare moments when an object transcends trend and becomes a legend,' Halimi continues. 'Jane Birkin's original bag is such a moment. A true unicorn in fashion history, it belongs in the same breath as Princess Diana's Black Sheep jumper or Freddie Mercury's crown and cloak.'
The bag's final sale estimate remains confidential, but expectations are unsurprisingly high. What Sotheby's does confirm is that the bag will join an illustrious line-up of archival fashion pieces in the Paris Fashion Icons sale—from sculptural pieces by Thierry Mugler to rare runway looks by Dior, Galliano, McQueen, and Azzedine Alaïa. Bidding will open online from June 26 to July 10, and viewings will be held at Sotheby's Paris galleries on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré from July 3-9.
As always, Sotheby's continues to lead the secondary market for Hermès handbags—whether it's a crisp white Himalaya, a neon Limited Edition, or the rarest collector's pieces in alligator, ostrich, or box calf. Today, over 1,200 Hermès bags are available for immediate purchase on Sotheby's Buy Now platform, a digital trove for serious collectors and first-timers alike. But none of them carry the legacy of this one. Because only one bag was carried by Jane Birkin—and only one started it all.

Minister Dion George to sign Landmark Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement on behalf of South Africa at the 2025 United Nations Oceans Conference in France
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, will be attending the third United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France and will on 9 June 2025, sign the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement on behalf of South Africa. Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, UNOC3 seeks to accelerate global action to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, in support of Sustainable Development Goal 14: 'Life Below Water'. This year's conference theme is Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean with three main priorities: (1) Advancing multilateral ocean processes and ambition; (2) Scaling up financing for ocean sustainability and blue economies; and (3) Strengthening marine science, knowledge-sharing and decision-making. Minister George and the other Member States are scheduled to formally sign the BBNJ Agreement during a high-level signing ceremony convened by the UNOC3 Secretariat. 'Signing the BBNJ, which is a crucial agreement geared toward strengthening governance in areas beyond national jurisdiction, will mark a significant milestone in the country's ocean governance journey and a reflection of our resolve to contribute meaningfully,' said Minister George. South Africa has developed a robust suite of legal frameworks, aligned with its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These include the National Environmental Management Act, the Integrated Coastal Management Act, the Marine Spatial Planning Act, the Marine Living Resources Act, the Biodiversity Act, and the Protected Areas Act. These instruments collectively provide for the sustainable use, spatial planning, and protection of marine ecosystems within national jurisdiction. South Africa also actively participates in regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), such as the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), promoting cooperative, science-based management of shared marine resources. 'In line with our local legal frameworks, the signing of the BBNJ will bolster global ocean governance and help advance our efforts to build our economy, while fiercely protecting our ocean,' said Minister George. South Africa is ahead of the curve because in line with the global efforts to protect the ocean, on World Environment Day, the Minister launched South Africa's inaugural Climate Change Coastal Adaptation Response Plan (CARP). CARP is a groundbreaking climate change national adaptation strategy which seeks to secure the future of South Africa's coastlines and the millions who depend on them. 'Our coastline or coastal cities are at the frontline of climate change, facing severe and multifaceted complexities that threaten livelihoods, communities, economies, infrastructure, and ecosystems,' said Minister George during the launch. In the build up to UNOC3, Minister George will also participate in the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, which is a high-level platform to showcase innovation and finance for ocean-based growth, taking place in Monaco on 7-8 June 2025. The Forum will highlight and promote the critical role that sustainable investment, cutting-edge innovation, and forward-thinking policies play in ensuring the long-term health and prosperity of our oceans and economies alike. Minister George highlighted that the Forum is a vital platform for South Africa, as our ocean and blue economy is a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development. 'Scaling up financing for ocean sustainability and blue economies is one of the key priorities of the UNOC3 and the Forum thus becomes an integral space for us to advance our economic growth and job creation prospects,' said Minister George. Rhinestones, cowboy boots: How to dress perfectly for a concert
In the last year, my most memorable evenings have been spent wearing — in no particular order — an exact replica of Taylor Swift's Lover rhinestone bodysuit (with matching boots), a red tie and combat jeans in homage to Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong, a tartan corset à la Gwen Stefani in her Galliano era, and a lilac top scattered with crystals to symbolise Coldplay's A Sky Full of Stars, all while listening to my favourite artistes play live. Basic band T-shirt for a concert I've spent all day in a Ticketmaster queue for? No siree. Whether at Swift's tour in London, Coldplay and Stefani in Abu Dhabi, or Green Day in Dubai, delving into the canon of an artiste and devising an outfit in homage elevates my concert-going experience exponentially, immersing me in the fandom through fashion. Judging by the sea of sequins at Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour — the proceeds of which recently enabled her to buy back the rights to the master recordings of her first six albums for a nine-figure sum — I'm not alone. This weekend, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour rolls into Europe for nine shows in London and Paris, the tour's only non-US dates and the closest opportunity for UAE-based members of the Beyhive to see the 40-song extravaganza, her first since 2023's Renaissance. Paying homage to Black pioneers of country music, the three-hour show features up to nine custom costumes designed by the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Mugler, Burberry, Loewe, Dolce & Gabbana, and Moschino. Chaps! Fringe! Star Spangled Banners! Gold leather! Denim on denim on denim! And all the crystals that Swarovski can wrangle. As concert-goers, there are a wealth of western-inspired styles to draw from. Most obviously, a cowboy hat. The baller move is Miu Miu's contemporary drill style (Dh2,380) or Vuitton's LV Vers with gold hardware (Dh4,300). At the other end of the corporeal scale, cowboy boots. There are plenty out there; I'd advise a soft suede or worn-in leather (three hours of dancing is no mean feat for the feet) and a low heel, leave the sky-high fringed Louboutins for Bey. Golden Goose's Wish Star line of boots fall on the fashion side of fancy dress, which is what we're aiming for. Assuming that Bey's backless chaps are a tribute act too far, your next best choice for the bottom half of your outfit is a pair of classic Levi's 501s. Beyoncé's been the face of the denim firm's 'Live In' collection since September 2024, and paid the ultimate tribute to a brand that supported her in the early days of Destiny's Child by recording a track called Levii's Jeans with Post Malone for the Cowboy Carter album. Another benefit of wearing jeans is, prosaically, pockets. Phone, hotel room key, pac-a-mac, stash them in a pocket and leave your hands free for the Single Ladies moves. Save the fashion statement for your top half: leather, fringing, rhinestones, bandana prints, it's all on the table. The Attico has a rhinestone-detailed white vest that recalls Bey's iconic Crazy in Love look (currently reduced to Dh1,320 at Ounass), or channel the singer's Y2K bandana scarf top with a 2025 version by Marant Etoile (Dh865). With 35 wins, Beyoncé is the most decorated artiste in all of Grammy Awards history. Given the endless supply of western lore fans have to draw from, I wouldn't be surprised if Cowboy Carter tour-goers take home the gong for most decorated audience.
