PGA Seizes Smuggled Plants Worth RM910,000 In Rantau Panjang
KOTA BHARU, May 5 (Bernama) -- The Southeast Brigade of the General Operations Force (PGA) seized 4,000 fruit plants and 1,600 flowering plants worth an estimated RM910,000 during an operation in Rantau Panjang yesterday.
Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the discovery was made when a lorry was stopped at the Serongga Checkpoint at around 7.30 pm under Op Taring Wawasan.
'Inspection of the lorry revealed thousands of fruit and flowering plants. The 34-year-old driver failed to present any valid documentation for the items,' he said in a statement today.

KLANG: All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here Friday (June 6) were believed not to be wearing life jackets, says Asst Comm S. Vijaya Rao. The North Klang OCPD said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. "Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills," he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan Saturday (June 7). Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. "The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code," he said. In the incident at about 5pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. - Bernama

Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. Shahmar Asecio pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim, to the charge against him. Advertisement He hurt to his 16-year-old son by hitting him with the wood at 11.30am on June 2, this year at a house in Kg Baitam Laut, Membakut. The offence is framed under Section 324/326A of the Penal Code. The court ordered Shahmar to serve the jail sentence concurrently with the sentence for another offence. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon.
