French Open 2025: Ben Shelton reaches the third round when his opponent withdraws with injury
PARIS (AP) — Ben Shelton reached the third round at the French Open for the second year in a row — and this time, the American didn't even need to swing his racket, moving on Tuesday when Hugo Gaston withdrew from the tournament because of an abdominal injury.
The 13th-seeded Shelton's best Grand Slam results were making it to the semifinals at the 2023 U.S. Open and the Australian Open this January.
He was supposed to face France's Gaston in the second round at Roland-Garros on Wednesday night.
Now Shelton advances to a meeting on Friday against two-time major finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas or Matteo Gigante.
That means Shelton will have had four days without competition following his five-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round Sunday night.

Dominik Szoboszlai MOCKS claims he is incompatible with Florian Wirtz
© IMAGO - Florian Wirtz Liverpool Bayer Leverkusen An insight into a Wirtz-Szoboszlai midfield Last night for Hungary, despite captaining his team to a 2-0 loss against Sweden, Szoboszlai delivered a masterclass for the onlooking Liverpool fans checking in on the 24-year-old. Advertisement He was initially positioned as a No. 10 alongside Roman Sallai, who might be Wirtz in Liverpool's engine room next season, but throughout the game he was a deep-lying playmaker in the No. 8 role. Inside his 79 minute appearance we saw a bit of everything. One shot on target, four key passes, an accurate cross, five accurate long-balls, one big chance created, six ground duels won, one aerial duel won, four clearances, one tackle and he was fouled five times by the opposition. The man was a trouble-maker from the off, constantly getting involved wherever he could and making sure he contributed to the team, whether it was on or off the ball. A captain's performance. Advertisement So what did this tell us? Well, if the reports are to be believed, then Wirtz will feature predominantly in the No. 10 role at Liverpool, which then potentially relegates Szoboszlai to the No. 8 role alongside Ryan Gravenberch, although he'll be competing with Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones for minutes. In the final games of the season, we saw Slot try and change things up, and the new role for the Hungarian is definitely something that he could excel in next season if he is required to change. But Wirtz has previously been positioned as a false-nine centre-forward and we've even seen Slot utilise a system where no striker is used. At the Etihad against Manchester City in February, Jones and Szoboszlai played as joint No. 10s, constantly pressing high and overloading the midfield.

Beyond the Game: Haier Vision for Youth and Sustainability
PARIS, June 8, 2025 /CNW/ -- In a bold step to advance inclusive growth and engage the younger generation, Haier, the world's No.1 brand in major appliances, officially launched the Haier Fans Cup in Paris, marking a strategic moment in evolving global sports marketing vision of Haier. Held during the world-renowned Roland-Garros (French Open) fortnight, the Haier Fans Cup brought together promising under-14 tennis players across France for a day of spirited competition and cultural celebration. More than a youth tournament, the initiative showcased Haier's vision of using sport as a bridge across generations, geographies, and shared aspirations. The event culminated in an exclusive opportunity for the winners to meet former WTA Number one champion Ana Ivanovic at Haier Roland-Garros fans village, to inspire dreams and connect young athletes with global icons. A Strategic Sponsorship Anchored in Purpose Co-hosted by Haier and Open Stade Français, the Haier Fans Cup builds on the legacy of one of France's most esteemed junior tennis tournaments. Established in 1983 and part of the ITF Junior Circuit, Open Stade Français has long served as a competitive and developmental platform for emerging tennis talent. The partnership empowers young athletes from diverse backgrounds by providing ranking opportunities, cultural exchange, and personal growth. The collaboration reflects a growing emphasis among global brands on creating lasting social impact through youth-focused initiatives. ESG in Action: Turning Purpose into Tangible Impact The Haier Fans Cup is grounded in the belief that sport can serve as a bridge, linking individuals to communities and nurturing shared aspirations across generations. This philosophy aligns with the broader ESG vision of Haier, where sport becomes a tool for inclusive development rather than a mere branding opportunity. In Europe, Haier steps beyond business to champion social and environmental causes. At Milan's Relay Marathon, Haier Europe was one of the top fundraisers of the event and has provided support to the expansion of the two Spazi Donna centers in Milan, ensuring a safer and better future for women facing difficult situations. On the environmental front, Haier Europe has focused on waste reduction and circular economy practices. In 2025, its manufacturing hub in Eskişehir, Turkey, achieved a recycling rate of 99% and received the Zero Waste to Landfill certification under the DIN SPEC 91436 Standard. Across the region, Haier Europe has achieved an average waste recycling rate of 98%, a result that underlines its operational commitment to sustainability. To encourage and support the circular economy and the culture of recycling and reuse, Haier partnered with Esosport, a benefit corporation that operates in waste management, by providing its employees the opportunity to drop off their old shoes and tennis balls. These shoes and tennis balls will then become new playgrounds for children and tracks for athletes. The brand's social engagement also extends to the workplace. In 2025, Haier Europe was recognized as a Top Employer in the UK & Ireland and received the 'Company for Generation Z' award, organized by Radar Academy, a testament to its commitment to fostering an inclusive and empowering workplace. At its core, Haier believes that sports serve as a vital bridge, linking individuals to society and the environment. This philosophy is deeply embedded in Haier brand DNA, where ESG are not add-ons but integral forces driving every step beyond the game. Sports and Purpose: Building Meaningful Connections Haier's long-term engagement in global sports reflects a strategic approach to brand-building. It focuses on cultural relevance, community impact, and sustainable growth. Through partnerships in tennis, basketball, marathons, and emerging areas such as esports, Haier uses sport not just as a communication channel, but as a platform to promote innovation, youth empowerment, and responsible development. Haier's sports strategy transcends visibility. From eco-conscious appliances at international events to inclusive youth tournaments like the Haier Fans Cup, each effort contributes to broader ESG goals, positioning sport as a vehicle for inclusion, wellbeing, and environmental awareness. Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy of Inspiration and Growth Moving forward, Haier aims to deepen its role at the intersection of sport, innovation, and social value. By investing in platforms that champion perseverance, equity, and long-term progress, the brand seeks to cultivate a presence that is both globally admired and socially impactful. Aryna Sabalenka Has New Boyfriend After Ex Partner's Sudden Death
Tennis pro Aryna Sabalenka has a new boyfriend, and they appear to be happy together more than a year after her ex-partner's sudden death. Her new boyfriend is Georgios Frangulis, a Brazilian-raised entrepreneur with a successful açaí business. They are very open about their romance, posting frequently about each other on social media. Advertisement Sabalenka lost to Coco Gauff in the French Open final on June 7. The final was marred by emotional outburst from Sabalenka, who burst into tears from the podium, calling her play "terrible." Sabalenka's ex-boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov died tragically in 2024. However, she appears to have found a happy relationship with Frangulis in the wake of that tragedy. "She's also spoken about how happy she is with her current boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis. The Brazilian owner of brand Oakberry and the tennis star went Instagram official in May of 2024 ... and he's been seen at her matches ever since," according to USA Today. Advertisement In September 2024, Sabalenka posted a photo showing her kissing Frangulis and wrote, "Happy birthday meu amor, I'm so lucky to have you by my side. Your support is priceless 🦖🐒❤️💜❤️" Sabalenka has shared other photos of them together on Instagram, writing in May, "My dinner date." She also posted a photo showing them together in a garden four days before the French Open final. According to AS, Frangulis' family has Greek heritage, and he has lived in the U.S. sine 2014, in Miami and Venice Beach. He was raised in Brazil, the site reported. The tennis pro has explained how important Frangulis was to her as she weathered tragedy. Advertisement Sabalenka told People: 'There was a really tough period where I was really happy to have him by my side, always cheering me up, always making sure that we are doing some fun stuff." Frangulis built a successful business around healthy food. He told Forbes how he "expanded his business to 34 countries in seven years and produced 7,000 tons of açaí sorbet." He was married before, according to that story, which also revealed he previously had thyroid cancer. Frangulis's wife was named Isabella "Beh" Armentano, but it's unclear when they broke up, according to Town and Country. He started out in law school and real estate before seeing a market in açaí. Advertisement "I observed the natural demand for fast food, but also many people looking for healthy food. And I realized the little supply of fast and healthy eating. Something with pattern, with brand, with branding. The acai was beginning to gain traction in California. The cooler juice houses began to offer açaí," he told Forbes in 2023. He has posted about Sabalenka on Instagram. According to People, Koltsov, her ex-boyfriend, died by suicide in March 2024 while in Florida "to support Sabalenka's appearance at the Miami Open," although they were no longer dating at that time. Sky News reported that it's believed he jumped from a hotel balcony. Advertisement They kept their relationship private, People reported, noting that Koltsov was a former ice hockey player. Sabalenka, who said she was heartbroken by her ex-boyfriend's death, indicated later that she wished she had taken a break after he died. 'Looking back I definitely think that I should have just stopped and just separated myself from tennis, just have a little break, recharge and start things over again," she said, according to The Independent. In 2019, Sabalenka also dealt with the death of her dad, who passed away at age 43.
