Oman stun Seeb to delay title party

Observer29-04-2025

Muscat: Oman Club clinched a thrilling 2-1 win over Seeb in the Round 20 of Omantel League at Seeb Stadium on Monday.
The game began with a balanced exchange of possession without real danger, with a slight advantage for Seeb, who were forced into an early substitution due to an injury to Hassan al Ajmi, replaced by Amjad al Harthy. Against the run of play, Oman took the lead in the 22nd minute through Spanish player Daniel Itur. Seeb came close to equalising before the end of the first half, but Abdulrahman al Mushaifri's shot went over the crossbar.
In the second half, Seeb continued to press and managed to equalise in the 66th minute through Arshad al Alawi, who capitalised on a moment of confusion in the penalty area. As both sides shared control in the latter stages, Oman struck on a last-minute counterattack, with Yazid al Rawahi netting the decisive goal.
With this result, Oman Club spoiled Seeb's chance to secure the league title early, as Seeb needed just one point to officially clinch the championship. Oman raised their tally to 38 points, solidifying their position in third place, while Seeb remained at 48 points. The gap between Seeb and second-placed Al Nahda is now just four points, intensifying the title race in the upcoming rounds.

SUR OVERCOME IBRI
Sur defeated Ibri 2-1 at Sur Sports Complex.
The home side started strongly, imposing their style early and earning a penalty that was converted by Mohammed al Najashi in the 15th minute. Sur maintained their attacking pressure and doubled the lead early in the second half when Mohammed al Muhaijri scored in the 46th minute, capitalising on a cross from Aysar al Alawi.
Ibri attempted a comeback and reduced the deficit in the 60th minute with a successful penalty taken by their foreign player, Fiston Abdul. Both teams continued to trade attacks, with Sur's Al Najashi missing a clear scoring opportunity, and Ibri almost equalising in the 83rd minute, only for Ayman Ibrahim to waste a one-on-one chance by hitting the post.
Despite Ibri's dominance in the closing minutes, Sur held onto their lead until the final whistle to secure a valuable win.
This victory lifted Sur to 20 points, clinging to their last hope of avoiding relegation, although they remain 12th in the standings, behind Ibri on goal difference. Sur must win their final two matches to stay in the top division; dropping any points will result in relegation to the First Division.
AL SHABAB, SAHAM SHARE SPOILS
The match between Al Shabab and Saham ended in a 2-2 draw at Sohar Sports Complex.
Saham opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Bassam al Saadi, holding the lead until half-time. In the 65th minute, Mohammed al Ghafri equalised for Al Shabab, and substitute Yousef al Ghafri put them ahead in the 79th minute. However, Saham snatched a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time with a second goal by Bassam al Saadi in the 97th minute.
The game was of average technical level, with both teams displaying evenly matched performances and missing several scoring chances.
With this result, Saham raised their total to 25 points, moving up to seventh place, while Al Shabab increased their tally to 27 points, reclaiming fourth place on goal difference over Al Nasr.

Griezmann to stay with Atletico Madrid until 2027

MADRID: France's 2018 World Cup winning forward Antoine Griezmann has extended his Atletico Madrid contract until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Monday. "Griezmann and Atletico have reached a deal to renew the French footballer's contract until June 30, 2027," said Atletico in a statement. Griezmann, 34, is Atletico's all-time top scorer with 197 goals over two spells at the club and his previous deal was due to run until 2026. The veteran forward has struggled for form in 2025, last finding the net in February as his team finished third in La Liga, ending the season trophyless. Griezmann, who scored in France's 2018 World Cup win over Croatia, signed for Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014. The striker, who retired from international football last year, won the Europa League in 2018 and twice finished a Champions League runner-up with Atletico, before joining Barcelona in 2019. Griezmann struggled with the Catalan giants, winning only a Copa del Rey before returning to Atletico on loan in 2021, eventually making the switch permanent. Atletico and Griezmann will compete at the Club World Cup this summer in the United States, with their first match against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on June 15. — AFP

Chelsea defeat Betis 4-1 to win Conference League

WROCLAW, Poland: Chelsea roared back to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw on Wednesday, becoming the first club to claim all four major European trophies. Manuel Pellegrini's enterprising Betis caught the favourites cold with an early goal from Abde Ezzalzouli against a flat-footed and listless Chelsea. But Enzo Maresca's second-half substitutions injected energy and Cole Palmer changed the complexion of the game in a five-minute spell, setting up Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson to score. Substitute Jadon Sancho made the game safe in the 83rd minute as the Spanish side faded in their first European final and Moises Caicedo added gloss to the scoreline. Chelsea are the first club to win the full set of Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup. It is also the first silverware for the club since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022, following an era of unprecedented success for the club. Boehly was on the pitch at the end, savouring the win that seemed unlikely when Betis were in control in the first half. The trophy win in Poland means Chelsea end the season with a flourish after also securing a place in next season's Champions League following a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. "It's a great feeling," captain Reece James told TNT Sports. "As the game went on we grew into it and thankfully we scored four goals in the second half. "Coming into this competition was something we had to win. Next season we go again in the Champions League." The Spanish side went ahead in the ninth minute through Ezzalzouli, who scored the goal against Fiorentina that took his side to the final. Reece James lifts the trophy with teammates. — Reuters Malo Gusto lost the ball and it broke to Betis captain Isco, who produced a clever pass to find Ezzalzouli on the edge of the box, with the Moroccan drilling a left-footed shot across Filip Jorgensen. Minutes later Marc Bartra tried his luck from distance but this time Jorgensen was equal to the task, producing a flying save. Urged on by their massed ranks of fans, Betis went close again when Johnny Cardoso's shot from inside the box was deflected behind. The Premier League side were enjoying the bulk of possession but struggling to create meaningful chances, with Betis defending well and Isco, a five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, pulling the strings. PALMER MAGIC Maresca brought on James for the struggling Gusto at the break and the English side looked livelier. Pellegrini was forced a change when goalscorer Ezzalzouli was forced off, with Jesus Rodriguez coming on to replace him. Maresca also made a number of other changes, including bringing on Sancho, but it took two moments of magic from Palmer to turn the tide. The England man produced a pinpoint cross from the right that found the onrushing Argentina midfielder Fernandez, who got between two defenders to head the ball past Adrian in the 65th minute. Suddenly Chelsea's tails were up and the fans behind the goal were in full voice. Five minutes later Palmer bamboozled the Betis defence, producing a wonderful turn and cross which Jackson bundled into the net. Jackson should have scored a second goal but a heavy touch allowed the Betis goalkeeper to gather. But Sancho made it 3-1 when he combined with fellow substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and finished from the angle and Caicedo added a fourth from the edge of the box. Victory for Chelsea breaks an astonishing cycle of wins for Spanish teams. Taking into account World Cups, European Championships, Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League, of the previous 27 men's finals involving Spanish teams, all 27 had had Spanish winners. — AFP
