You'll be able to ride 100-year-old subway cars in Brooklyn this weekend

Time Out2 days ago

Step—or better yet, subway—back in time this weekend with a nostalgic trip down MTA lane: Just as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York Transit Museum festively did over the holidays, the NYC subway system will see a few retro trains taking to its tracks on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, offering riders a glimpse into New York's metro past.
As part of the so-called " Parade of Trains," a selection of historical subway cars—this year's lineup includes the legendary R1/9s, BMT Standards, and BU Gate Cars, the latter of which are more than 120 years old—will be rolled out for a special weekend celebration on the BMT Brighton Line, inviting MetroCard swipers to hop on and off vintage favorites at the Brighton Beach station (B/Q platforms) and Kings Highway station (Manhattan-bound B/Q platform).
Trains will run between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway starting at 11am ET on both Saturday and Sunday, with individual trips running approximately 10 minutes each and the last train being boarded by 3:50pm. Admission to the throwback experience is free with a simple MetroCard swipe or OMNY tap and while not required, advanced registration is encouraged. Pre-registration also enters you into a raffle for a chance to win a Family membership to the New York Transit Museum (a $100 value).

Each train car will eschew the now-standard modern trappings (think air conditioning and "The next stop is..." automated voice announcements) and fully take you back in time with their rattan seats, leather straps, hand-operated doors and old-school advertisements.
'It really feels like stepping into a moving museum or time capsule,' said Transit Museum Marketing Manager Chelsea Newburg. 'You can hop on cars that date all the way back to 1904, sit on the rattan seats and even see vintage ads in the cars from the period the train cars were in service. Each car has its own story and personality, and together they show just how much the city and its transit system has changed over the years.'

Taylor Swift fans fall for pregnancy rumors after singer steps out with 'baby bump'

Taylor Swift fans convinced themselves that the pop star was pregnant this week thanks to an optical illusion. The rumor mill went into overdrive after the 35-year-old stepped out in New York with what appeared to be a pregnant belly on display. 'She's eight months pregnant,' wrote one fan on X, while another posted, 'Taylor appears pregnant in New York!' However, upon closer inspection, it was clear that Swift's black mini-dress had blended into a black car in the background, which made it look like she had a large baby bump. A number of users found the misunderstanding hilarious, with one commenting, 'I thought Travis Kelce was becoming a dad for a sec.' Taylor spent the weekend with bestie Selena Gomez in New York, though she honored her boyfriend Travis during the outing. Swift, 35, and Gomez, 32, were spotted at Monkey Bar in Manhattan on Saturday, while Kelce was in Kansas City for the Big Slick charity event. While the 35-year-old Kelce wasn't present for the outing, Swift was clearly thinking about him, choosing to wear a sweet gift from the Kansas City Chiefs star. The pop icon was spotted wearing a custom Wove x Michelle Wie West gold and diamond tennis friendship bracelet with the letters "TNT" during the outing (via TMZ). The outing also came just days after Swift successfully purchased her own music catalogue, for a sum reported to be $360 million by some and anywhere between $600 million and $1 billion by others. Swift was seen wearing a black minidress with silver platform heels, diamond strand earrings and carrying a black handbag. Gomez was spotted a sleeveless brown top tucked into matching brown pants with a brown jacket and brown pointed-toe heels for the outing. It's unclear what the besties discussed on the outing, whether it was Swift's successful music buyback or her relationship with Kelce. Taylor and Travis haven't been out much since he played in the Super Bowl back in February. A number of users found the misunderstanding hilarious, with one commenting, 'I thought Travis Kelce was becoming a dad for a sec' The couple, who have been together since the summer of 2023, have recently been at the center of gossip that they're planning to get married and start a family – and former athletes Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski have shared their thoughts on the pair's future. Julian, 38, said in the 'Dudes on Dudes' podcast about the possibility of Taylor and Travis having their first child: 'That would be a great kid.' Rob, 35, added: 'The kid would be performing – having eight catches a game and then doing the halftime show.' In March 2024, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Harrison Butker told EWTN News in Depth he hoped the couple would ' get married and start a family '. Taylor was photographed in November 2023 holding fellow WAG Chariah Gordon's infant daughter. In February, Travis' friend Adam Lefkoe recalled on the 'Steam Room' podcast the singer was excited to see photos of his baby when they met at an MLB game. Travis is already an uncle to three nieces, with his brother, Jason Kelce, expecting a fourth daughter with wife Kylie Kelce. The athlete has spoken about fatherhood, saying in March 2024, on his and Jason's 'New Heights' podcast: 'I can't wait… to f****** make one' – while discussing 'lab-grown' NBA players. In November, on the 'Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?' show, Travis also joked having a baby would make him 'smarter', adding: 'Man, that's all I had to do to become brilliant?'

Closing arguments begin in sexual misconduct trial of Harvey Weinstein

The third sexual misconduct trial of former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was rapidly heading toward a conclusion on Tuesday, as prosecutors and the defense began delivering closing arguments in Manhattan criminal court. 'If there is a doubt about their case, you gotta throw it out,' defense attorney Arthur Aidala said of three women who testified against Weinstein. 'These are the people they want you to believe – they're all women with broken dreams.' He asked them to give his client the benefit of the doubt on rape and sexual assault charges. Prosecutors were set to begin their closing arguments later on Tuesday. Six weeks after prosecutors began laying out their case against him (largely a re-airing of a 2020 criminal prosecution, with one additional accuser, that was later overturned on appeal), the matter will be deliberated again by jurors, without Weinstein testifying. He is charged with assaulting three women in Manhattan between 2006 and 2013 – Mimi Haley, Jessica Mann and Kaja Sokola – and has been appearing in court each day in a wheelchair from Manhattan's Bellevue hospital, where he is being treated for a number of ailments, including chronic myeloid leukemia. Manhattan's district attorney, Alvin Bragg, who is facing re-election this year, opted to retry Weinstein soon after his first conviction on third-degree rape and a criminal sexual charge was vacated because prosecutors were found to have prejudiced the jury by calling witnesses whose testimony was unrelated to the charges. The decision to bring a second prosecution in New York required the 73-year-old Weinstein to be travel from California, where he was serving a 16-year sentence for sexual assault. The second New York trial avoided the most serious sexual assault charges that he was cleared of in 2020 to avoid double jeopardy. At trial, prosecutors have sought to establish that Weinstein used his power in the film industry to sexually assault and 'exert enormous control' over the three women, each of whom were seeking to gain a footing in the business. In opening statements, assistant DA Shannon Lucey said Weinstein had offered his accusers film scripts and promises of fame, and he 'used those dream opportunities as weapons'. Prosecutors avoided introducing so-called prior bad acts testimony – but brought an additional sex crimes charge related to Sokola, who accused Weinstein of performing oral sex on her in a Manhattan hotel on one occasion in early 2006. Weinstein's defense team pushed back on that claim, offering jurors the testimony of Helga Samuelsen, a friend of Sokola's, who said Weinstein had visited Sokola months earlier in their shared apartment and spent about a half hour in a bedroom with her. Sokola earlier testified that the alleged encounter had not happened. As with each of three women, Weinstein's defense offered evidence that their friendly relationship with the defendant pre-existed and post-dated the alleged sexual assaults – and each had received compensation from a payout fund established after allegations were made against the movie mogul, triggering a public reckoning over gender power dynamics that came to be known as the #MeToo movement. All three said they believed Weinstein could help them with their professional goals and maintained relationships with him, and, in some instances, he had helped them find work. Aidala told jurors that the three women had 'fooled around with him consensually', adding 'they were flirtatious, they were friendly, they wanted him, they needed him, he could change the trajectories of their lives'. But a clinical psychologist, testifying for the prosecution, said that for a variety of reasons, it is not unusual for sexual assault victims to remain on good terms with their assailants after an assault. In total, prosecutors introduced evidence from 24 witnesses during Weinstein's retrial. They included former assistants, friends of his accusers and workers at the hotels where the alleged assaults took place. Weinstein, who pleaded not guilty, elected not to testify in his defense – repeating the same decision he made in the earlier trials. Aidala said his client very much wanted to take the stand – and had been prepped to do so – before Weinstein decided against it as a matter of courtroom strategy. Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault trial to conclude with closing arguments

NEW YORK, June 3 (Reuters) - Harvey Weinstein's rape and sexual assault trial is set to wrap up with closing arguments to the jury by prosecutors and defense lawyers on Tuesday in Manhattan, a year after a state appeals court overturned the former movie mogul's 2020 conviction. Weinstein, 73, is accused of raping an actress and assaulting two women in what prosecutors have called a pattern in which the onetime Hollywood kingmaker used his power and influence to lure in victims and then keep them silent. The Miramax studio co-founder has pleaded not guilty and has denied ever having non-consensual sex with anyone. Weinstein, suffering from a litany of health problems, was present throughout the trial in a wheelchair. Weinstein already will likely spend the rest of his life in prison due to a 16-year prison sentence for rape in California. Weinstein was convicted of rape by a jury in a previous trial in Manhattan in February 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals in April 2024 threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors by the trial judge. Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, when the conviction was overturned. That conviction had been a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. Weinstein has been held at New York City's Rikers Island jail since his conviction was overturned. He has had several health scares while being held at Rikers, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. Prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg have portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala rejected that characterization during his opening statement to the jury, saying the Oscar-winning producer had "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities. Bragg's office originally accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, charges he was convicted of in the first trial. For the retrial, prosecutors added a new charge that Weinstein assaulted another woman in Manhattan in 2002. The woman, Kaja Sokola of Poland, testified that Weinstein assaulted her in a Manhattan hotel room. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. He has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. Miramax studio produced many hit movies in its heyday, including "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." Weinstein's own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after the original sexual misconduct accusations became widely publicized.
