Harry speaks at LA awards as Prince William attends Pope's funeral
The Duke of Sussex was a guest speaker alongside Hollywood stars at an awards show hours before his brother attended the Pope's funeral on behalf of the King.
Prince Harry appeared at the Living Legend of Aviation Awards in Los Angeles on Friday night alongside John Travolta, who has become a good friend since the Prince was himself inducted as a Living Legend at last year's ceremony.
The 40-year-old Duke, who was not accompanied by wife Meghan, took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton with Travolta and fellow actors Kurt Russell and Morgan Freeman to pay tribute to the courage of the aviators who helped fight January's devastating wildfires in California.
'First responders rise to the challenge'
Harry told the audience: 'What I've seen and what the world sees is that first responders rise to that challenge every single time, and yet we rarely get the chance to thank them.
'This community, bound and energised by service to others, shows up for us wherever we are and whenever they're needed. They put their lives on hold for as long as we need them.
'Tonight we celebrate the aviation legends, the kind forged in smoke, shaped by teamwork and defined by the courage to fly into danger when others are told to flee.
'This community doesn't ask for attention or recognition. They don't ask for praise.
'But tonight we're going to give it to them regardless, because in my experience, it's the people who don't expect it or ask for it that need and appreciate it the most.'
Greg Herrick, a vintage aircraft collector who also holds the title of Living Legend, said he felt Harry and Travolta, 71, who famously danced with Diana, Princess of Wales, at the White House in 1985, had bonded 'like brothers'.
Russell, 74, described Harry as 'always the nice fellow' and said the Duke felt honoured to be part of the 'elite aviator community'.
The veteran actor said: 'Pilots to me are a community that is indescribably different and unique from anything I've ever been a part of. This is the best night of the year. I love the people that are in that room – everything to do with aviation.'
Another guest said: 'John [Travolta] was beyond excited that Harry did not just attend this event, but also paid the love forward from winning last year. His comments were a major moving moment of the evening.
'John has been in communication with Harry since last year and they mutually decided it was right to pay tribute to the crews.
'We all know it's a huge deal for Harry to attend a Hollywood event, because he's very much shied away from these types of events since he moved to California five years ago.
'But John's passion has fired up something in Harry to continue his love for flying long after his Army days in helicopters.'
Astronauts honoured at ceremony
At the ceremony Travolta, the Living Legends organisation's 'official ambassador of aviation', inducted and honoured major names in aviation including Christopher Cassidy, a former NASA astronaut who logged three spaceflights, 10 spacewalks, and a total of 377 days in space.
Others honoured were Robert 'Hoot' Gibson, a former astronaut and Navy fighter pilot, and Tom Costello, NBC's Emmy award-winning aviation and space correspondent.
The crew of the Polaris Dawn, whose five-day space mission last year included the first commercial spacewalk ever, received the inaugural Dr. Buzz Aldrin Space Advancement Award.

Love Island is brainless and addictive telly - but should we still be watching
Love Island is addictive nonsense, but millions will still be watching when it returns for a new series Love Island viewing generally starts with loud declarations not to waste hours of your time watching any of it. Who wants to stare at identikit tanned airheads being paranoid every night and making you feel bad for eating biscuits in front of the telly? The contestants are also clearly just after Insta-fame and an Insta-brand deal after the show. However, if you tune in even for a couple of minutes (tonight June 9th on ITV2 at 9pm), beware, you may find yourself addicted, trapped into another season that it's impossible to look away from. One minute you're mocking the dreadful state of reality shows and the next thing you know, you're racing to the living room at 8.59pm every evening for a month in case you miss one second. The shame. Like a car crash - you know you shouldn't be looking, but you can't help it. Should we be staring at this dreadful, shallow social experiment? Or is it harmless fluff? Supply and demand (endless series) suggests that something has stuck. So here we are, with Maya Jama hosting once again from another sun-drenched villa, as the beautiful people line up to be loved - though they are mostly judged like cattle at a market. Among them are Sophie, a motivational speaker, Dejon, the obligatory personal trainer, Tommy, a landscape gardener, Helena, cabin crew, and Harry, a gold trader, semi-pro footballer and model (of course). Tommy reveals he would be the CEO of 'Taking hours to do my hair', while Harry insists he wants the girl next door. Megan, a musical theatre performer, says: 'I love a boy that's a bit pasty and I don't mind a 'dad bod', while Ben, a taxi driver, just wants someone 'sexy, good looking, good chat, good vibes, nice teeth, good eye contact, cute smile…' Not much then. This shiny, perfectly tanned reality show really is a perplexing phenomenon. Utterly brainless telly, but strangely fascinating - if only to stare in awe at their marvellous abs. Perhaps, at a time of political unrest and bad news, it has fulfilled a need for something that doesn't require thinking. And at the end, one cool couple will win a small fortune - not so brainless after all. Expect the usual action, with twists and turns, bombshell arrivals, shock dumpings and plenty of drama. It's been a decade since this show first hit screens and clearly we're still glued. It is what it is… *Love Island is airing on ITV2 tonight at 9pm There's plenty more on TV tonight - here's the best of the rest.. SHARDLAKE, ITV1, 9pm A whodunit and a history lesson all in one, this is a fun mystery adventure set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries. Sean Bean plays Oliver Cromwell and Arthur Hughes plays Matthew Shardlake in the series based on the novels by Shardlake is a lawyer whose sheltered life is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the brutal murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote coastal town of Scarnsea. It's absolutely crucial for Cromwell's own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. Failure is not an option. Cromwell also insists that Shardlake is accompanied by his cocky underling Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle) to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order. Set in a creepy Tudor monastery, this is a drama drenched in suspense and deception. JAMIE'S DYSLEXIA REVOLUTION, CHANNEL 4, 9pm 'We need to start making some change,' says Jamie. We've heard him say this before - he's no stranger to campaigning, but this one is his most personal yet. As he opens up about his own struggles with dyslexia, the chef delves into the challenges still faced by children with dyslexia across Britain. Jamie asks why we should expect everyone to fit the same Victorian model of education and assessment and takes the fight to the government's door. He says: 'I really struggled to read at primary school. I read my first book when I was 33. It was all those feelings of being s*** and you had nothing to offer the world and everyone else is getting it and you don't.' Armed with the statistic that out of 100 kids, at least 10 to 15 have dyslexia (with only two diagnosed at school), Jamie speaks to teachers, charities, parents and children who want and need government intervention. EMMERDALE, ITV1, 7.30pm John is questioned by the police about the day Nate disappeared. When the interview is over, John hopes he's said enough to protect Cain. Rattled, Cain finally voices his suspicions that Tracy is responsible for Nate's death. Venting after the accusation, Tracy tries to defend herself. John tries to comfort Cain reassuring him the police will find something else to focus on soon, then he formulates a plan. Jacob finds out Sarah hasn't told Charity about the cancer and is furious. CORONATION STREET, ITV1, 8pm Kit suggests to Lou that she should do a DNA test to find out if he's really Brody's Dad, but will Lou agree? When Sarah invites Kit to a family barbecue, he declines as he's got enough drama going on. Millie is on Todd's doorstep carrying an overnight bag and with a huge bombshell to share. Leanne joins Ronnie for lunch and they agree that it's good to be friends. Lou asks Gary if he can help her sell Mick's van.

Meghan 'ready to add hotels and restaurants to her growing business empire'
Meghan Markle could be about to expand her brand into the hospitality sector after records showed a huge play by the Duchess and former actress Meghan Markle is ready to grow her brand as she continues her return into the public eye, according to reports. The former Suits actress appears to have plans to venture into the hotel and restaurant industry with her latest move. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, has been continuing to trademark her lifestyle firm, recently retitled to As Ever. It has be listed as "hospitality services" in records, with it said this will include places to stay, 'provision of food and drink' and temporary lodgings. It's the latest bold move by Meghan has has spent the last year creating a new brand for herself away from the Royal Family. As well as her ventures, which include products such as jam, Meghan has been involved in TV productions, including Netflix's With Love, Meghan. It's thought that a venture into the hospitality sector would suit Meghan, too. The mum-of-two said during her Netflix series: "When I have someone stay, one of my favourite things to do is prep the guest room." And her brand's website hinted there was more to come with its slogan too. It described it as: "As Ever is more than a brand — it's a love language. "Created by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, As Ever welcomes you to a collection of products, each inspired by her long-lasting love of cooking, entertaining and hostessing." With Meghan's As Ever Instagram page becoming more active recently, a snap of the Duchess running in the sea in a white frock appeared over the weekend. The upload was captioned: "So excited for all the good to come! Running into the weekend like." Just hours before the water upload, Meghan had shared a series of heartwarming photos which featured herself, hubby Prince Harry, and their children - six-year-old Archie and four-year-old Lilibet. The family of four were seen enjoying a memorable family trip to Disneyland. Sharing the montage with her 3.7million followers on her personal page, Meghan described their two-day visit as "pure joy". She also expressed gratitude to the park for helping create their special experience. Offering a glimpse into her family's stateside life, Meghan included a sweet photo of Archie and Lilibet meeting Elsa from Frozen for the first time. There was also a photograph of Prince Harry and Lilibet enjoying a ride together. The adorable family trip uploads come after a video of a pregnant Meghan twerking caused controversy. The clip, which runs for more than a minute and also features a dad-dancing Harry sees the pair dance together. Meghan is wearing a black maternity dress in the footage and is seen cradling her large bump as she dances. The upload came after Meghan had earlier posted never-before-seen intimate family photos of 'Daddy's little girl and favorite adventurer' Lili to mark her birthday.

Meghan Markle's 'vulgar' move would leave King Charles 'horrified', claims expert
Meghan Markle stunned the world by sharing a video of her in a hospital room before giving birth to her daughter. A royal commentator has described Meghan Markle's decision to share a video of her twerking in an effort to induce labour as "utterly bizarre", which would likely leave King Charles "horrified". The Duchess of Sussex surprised fans and the press by uploading the footage on Lilibet's fourth birthday, where she danced vibrantly in a maternity ward with Prince Harry by her side. Meghan is seen in the video energetically twerking to Starrkeisha's Baby Momma Anthem, hitching her skirt above the knees, lifting her arms and shuffling low, hands placed firmly on her waist, legs moving rhythmically. Posting the video, Meghan reflected: "Four years ago today, this also happened," adding that after other methods such as eating spicy food, walking extensively, and trying acupuncture failed, dancing seemed like the next option. "Both of our children were a week past their due dates... so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work – there was only one thing left to do!" she penned. Jennie Bond, ex-BBC Royal correspondent, gave her take on the surprising clip, telling the Mirror that those moments are typically highly private for any couple. Emphasising the significance of personal choice during childbirth, Bond stated: "The hours before you give birth are some of the most personal, intimate and private in the lives of any couple. "Women are perfectly entitled to do whatever they feel like to get through the waiting, and the pain. Giving birth is a serious business, and anything to lighten the mood is welcome. "However, to share those scenes with the world is utterly bizarre and, in my view, takes away all the magic of the moment. I cannot imagine why she chose to release it. "Maybe show it one day to your nearest and dearest- but to anyone and everyone who wants to click on it? "I can hear the voice of the late Queen's former private secretary, Lord Charteris, repeating the comments he once made about Fergie: 'Vulgar, vulgar, vulgar'." She went on: "If the King has watched it, which I doubt, though he can't have missed the headlines I'm sure he would be horrified. Royalty has to carry with it some measure of dignity. "I'm glad they were so happy before the birth, I'm glad Harry was there to support his wife in every way, I'm delighted to hear that he's such a great dad. But they really can't have it both ways. "They can't demand privacy and be so coy about sharing images of their children and then show us all these intensely intimate scenes. "And she cannot expect to be treated as if she's royal whilst behaving like a click-hungry social media influencer." Jennie admitted, though, that such videos will "connect in a very real way to young people". "Perhaps that's what Meghan is trying to do," she reasoned. "My own daughter thought the video humanised both Meghan and Harry and was light-hearted and hugely relatable. "It reminded her of her own pregnancies and labour and she thought it was rather charming. "In many ways, I agree with her. I just don't think it sits happily with trying to cling to the vestiges of being ' royal '." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
