Meerut Murder: A jail official said that Muskan Rastogi expressed dissatisfaction with her current legal representation.
Muskan Rastogi, 28, who stands accused of murdering her husband, former merchant navy officer Saurabh Rajput, sought permission from Meerut jail authorities in Uttar Pradesh to pursue legal studies so she can represent herself in court, The Times of India reported. A jail official told the publication that Muskan Rastogi expressed dissatisfaction with her current legal representation and stated her intention to argue her own case.
Muskan Rastogi and her partner, Sahil Shukla, allegedly murdered her husband, Saurabh Rajput, 35. His dismembered and cement-sealed body was discovered inside a blue plastic drum at their residence in Meerut on March 18. The couple was arrested after returning from a trip to Himachal Pradesh and sent to Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail following the denial of their bail applications.
According to officials, Muskan Rastogi has not studied beyond Class 8 and lacks a senior secondary certificate- a mandatory qualification to pursue legal studies in India. Authorities are now exploring options for her to resume her education. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers educational programs within the prison system, and officials said- as per the report- that Muskan Rastogi would first need to complete her senior secondary education before enrolling in an LLB course.
Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma told the outlet, 'Since Muskan was lodged in jail, no one from her family has visited her, while Sahil's maternal grandmother and brother met him. Now, Muskan has expressed interest in pursuing legal education, and we are considering the process. If she wants to study, jail authorities will provide all necessary resources."
Earlier this month, Meerut Police filed a nearly 1,000-page chargesheet against Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla in connection with the murder. Submitted 69 days after the discovery of Rajput's remains, the chargesheet included statements from 34 witnesses, including family members, hotel staff, and police officials. Muskan Rastogi's parents, Kavita and Pramod Rastogi, testified against her and their statements have been included in the chargesheet. Additionally, Muskan Rastogi was found to be pregnant during a routine medical check-up in jail.
Saurabh Rajput returned to Meerut on February 24. On March 3, just days after his arrival, he was allegedly stabbed to death by Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla. His body was dismembered in the bathroom and concealed in a blue drum filled with cement and dust to mask the odor.

Chhattisgarh news: Innova at 100 kmph flips after driver opens door to spit gutka in Bilaspur; one dead, two injured

A businessman was killed and two people were critically injured in a road accident in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur on Monday. The driver of an Innova opened the door of the vehicle moving at 100 kilometres per hour (kmph) to spit gutka, causing the vehicle to flip over and crash, The Times of India reported. The accident took place on the Bilaspur-Raipur highway on Monday. The Innova overturned multiple times on the road, hitting two vehicles and also injuring one of its drivers. According to the ToI report citing police, the deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Jackie Gehi, a cloth merchant from Chakarbhatha on the outskirts of Bilaspur. His friend Akash Chandani was driving the vehicle. He suddenly opened the door while driving to spit gutkha. Instantly, he lost control of the car, which swerved into the divider and overturned multiple times. One more person, identified as Pankaj Chhabra, was also in the Innova at the time of the accident. The force of the impact was so high that it threw all three passengers out of the vehicle, which went somersaulting down the highway. Jackie, sitting in the back, was flung and hit a metal structure near the divider. He sustained fatal injuries to his chest, head, and shoulders, leading to his death on the spot. Akash and Pankaj were also ejected from the car and struck the ground, suffering critical injuries. Later, the police arrived at the scene, and the injured were rushed to a hospital. The incident was caught on CCTV. The video showed the Innova flipping down the road, one of the passengers being ejected, and the car hitting a pole.

Land-for-jobs case: Lalu Yadav pressured officials to approve job applications, alleges CBI

Former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav exerted undue pressure on officials to approve the job applications of candidates who had allegedly gifted land parcels to him and his family, the Central Bureau of India told a Delhi court on Monday, according to The Times of India. The investigation agency made the submissions before Special Judge Vishal Gogne, who was hearing the matter. The case centres on allegations that between 2004 and 2009, when Yadav was the Union railway minister, his family illegally acquired land at reduced prices in exchange for appointments to Group-D positions in the Indian Railways. The agency alleges that land parcels were transferred to Yadav's family members, including wife Rabri Devi and daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav, at prices significantly below the market value. Those who transferred the land parcels to Yadav's family were allegedly given jobs in return. During the proceedings on Monday, Special Public Prosecutor DP Singh highlighted that on a particular day, multiple applications were cleared with 'speed' as compared to the usual 'tedious' process of clearing applications, PTI reported. 'We have approvers who tell us that the pressure [from the railway ministry] was enormous,' the newspaper quoted the prosecutor as saying. 'Most certificates were forged and never verified. How can so many applications in bulk be decided instantly.' The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered the case on May 18, 2022 against Yadav and 15 others including his wife, two daughters and unidentified public servants and private persons. It alleged that the land transfers to Yadav's family led to them acquiring more than one lakh square feet of land for just Rs 26 lakh, compared to a circle rate of more than Rs 4.39 crore.
