Motorcyclist driving 187 km/h arrested near Kelowna, RCMP say

Mounties in Kelowna say they arrested and charged a motorcyclist after a number of attempts to stop him as he sped along the Okanagan Connector.
The driver was first spotted by Merritt Highway Patrol speeding on Highway 97 C Friday afternoon, according to police. The detachment didn't chase the man and instead radioed the Kelowna Integrated Road Safety Unit to advise the motorcycle was heading towards them.
Around 4:30 p.m. police in Peachland clocked the motorcycle travelling 187 km/h, the RCMP says.
'Along with the high rate of speed, the suspect was weaving in and out of traffic, passing vehicles in an unsafe manner, potentially putting innocent people at risk,' reads a news release issued Saturday.
Officers attempted to stop the bike but were unsuccessful, and again radioed ahead to another road safety member who saw the driver heading into West Kelowna.
At the intersection of Highway 97 and Gellatly Road, officers caught up to the bike and positioned police vehicles in front of it to stop the man, according to the release.
'While an attempt was made to flee, police were able to pull the rider from the stationary motorcycle, where he was quickly arrested for dangerous driving and flight from police,' it continues.
Video obtained by Castanet shows the motorcyclist lying on the ground with an officer sitting on top of him.
Police say they impounded the motorcycle and the driver has been charged with excessive speeding, failing to stop for police, and driving without consideration in addition to other offences under the Motor Vehicle Act.
'Thanks to Merritt and Kelowna Highway Patrol, Kelowna IRSU and Kelowna frontline officers, this dynamic situation was brought to a quick and safe resolution. There were no reported injuries,' the news release concludes.

Cyclist fatally struck by pickup truck on Vancouver Island: RCMP

The Oceanside RCMP says first responders were called to Marina Way near Carmel Place around 10:50 a.m. after a collision involving multiple cyclists and a Ford pickup truck. Two cyclists were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. A third died at the scene. Police say the deceased is a 79-year-old man from Qualicum Beach. 'While all of the contributing factors into this collision are still being determined, the initial investigation indicates that the pickup truck entered onto Marina Way from a side street and collided with the cyclists who were riding on Marina Way,' Mounties wrote in a news release Saturday. 'Drugs and alcohol on the part of the pickup truck driver and the cyclists have been excluded as contributing factors. The pickup driver remained on scene and is co-operating with the investigation.' RCMP collision analysts and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the crash, and police ask anyone with information or video to call 250-248-6111.

At the time, he was on parole for another previous sexual misconduct conviction. His counsel claimed that Dueck was 'mentally handicapped' and was a failure of the system. In 2022, he was denied parole for a previous conviction, but was released without notice to Kelowna residents after servicing his sentence in 2023. He'd also previously been the subject of public police warnings in 2020 when he was released in the Fraser Valley after serving time for sex crimes. RCMP team up to take down 187 km/h motorcyclist A man in Kelowna was arrested in a dramatic takedown and had his motorcycle impounded after being spotted driving at 187 km/h on Highway 97C near Merritt on Friday. Article content Originally spotted by Merritt Highway Patrol travelling at a high rate of speed, the officers did not pursue the vehicle in light of public safety, instead radioing ahead to the Kelowna Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) with a description of the bike, rider and direction of travel. The suspect was spotted Peachland at 4:29 p.m., still travelling at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of traffic and conducting unsafe passing. Two police vehicles attempted to stop the motorcycle but were unsuccessful. They radioed ahead to another IRSU unit, who observed the bike going into West Kelowna. Shortly after, police caught up to the rider at the intersection of Highway 97S and Gellatly Road, boxing in the bike with their cars. The rider attempted to flee, but police said they were able to pull the rider from the stationary motorcycle, and he was arrested. Article content The adult driver was charged with several offences including two counts of excessive speed, two counts of failing to stop for police, driving without consideration as well as other motor vehicle act offences. The motorcycle was also impounded. Three injured in massive gas station fire near Chilliwack A massive fire broke out at a Shell gas station off of Highway 1 near Bridal Falls Road on Saturday, leaving three people injured. Online video showed a camper completely engulfed in flames under the station's awning, with black smoke billowing into the sky. After a call at 11:58 a.m. about the fire, emergency services responded with three primary care paramedics, once advanced care paramedic, one responder unit and a supervisor, as well as a critical care helicopter. Paramedics transported one patient by helicopter to hospital in critical condition and two patients via ground, both in stable condition. Search operation underway for man, 20, who possibly drowned near Verdun Beach
Montreal police and firefighters are searching for a 20-year-old man who went missing in the waters of the St. Lawrence River near Verdun Beach on Saturday afternoon. Police say several 911 calls were placed at about 5:20 p.m. concerning a man in distress in the water. When police arrived at the scene, they were unable to locate him from the shore, police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said. Nautical patrols with Montreal police and firefighters are currently on the water. The Canadian Coast Guard has also been called in to help with the search operation, Chèvrefils said. According to preliminary information, the man might have fallen into the water while playing with a ball, she said.
