IMWA conducts family counseling seminar
Indian Muslim Welfare Association in collaboration with Indian Community School Khaitan conducted its first 'Healthy Family Healthy Children' seminar May 3, 2025 at ICSK auditorium. The main purpose was to address the parents from distressed families which reflected on their children's poor academic performance. IMWA President Syed Hanif Ahmed in coordination with the school principal K Gangadhar and his staff organized the event for the benefit of the school parents and for members of different Indian associations in Kuwait. Five distinguished counselors were invited to speak on different topics invited by IMWA President who would generate an impact on issues faced by families in their daily lives.
The meeting started with the anchor Lubna Asif requesting the audience to stand up for the national anthems of Kuwait and India followed by Quran recitation and then it's translation from Surah Baqarah verse number 187. Gangadhar Shirsath emphasized the growing concerns about disturbed students due to unhealthy home environments wherein students lack self-confidence. Such seminars and counseling sessions are sure to create awareness, and they will provide proper measures to be adopted by parents to handle children in such situations. After his speech he facilitated the President of IMWA Syed Hanif Ahmed by presenting a memento on behalf of the school for organizing the event.
Ahmed spoke about how family dynamics change considerably over the course of our lifetime, there are many types of transitions that families go through together. Each family is unique, even within its own culture. He welcomed the panel of guest speakers who featured on different topics such as communication problems, mental health impact, substance abuse, relationship conflicts and Guided parenting.
Zubeida Shabbir Khajuriwala who is a counseling psychologist/psychotherapist/therapist for children with special needs and learning difficulties and an academician spoke about communication problems. Rukaiya Mandasaurwala spoke about mental health's impact on our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
She categorized thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as overt, covert, and social, and identified causes of behavioral problems such as genetics, mental health conditions, and trauma. Bhosale spoke about parental substance abuse whose affects causes divorce, separation, and changes in family structures like blended families deeply impact children's emotional and academic well-being.
Sabha Sheikh, HOD of counselling and Psychology ICSK (Khaitan), spoke briefly about how parents cause harm and exhibit to their children in several forms despite their best intentions. She also mentioned the role of personal struggles in exhibiting this undesirable behavior. Dr Nasreen Sheikh discussed why conflicts happen and what strategies one can follow to overcome these challenges such as listen actively, express feelings calmly and avoid blame.

Air India says plane ‘well-maintained' before crash
NEW DELHI: Air India's Boeing plane was 'well-maintained' before it crashed a week ago, killing all but one of 242 people on board, the airline said Thursday. Indian authorities are yet to detail what caused the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner to hurtle to the ground in the western city of Ahmedabad, where at least 38 people were also left dead. As investigators attempt to retrieve data from the plane's black boxes — the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder — the airline said that no problems were detected with the jet before the disaster. 'The plane was well-maintained, with its last major check in June 2023,' Air India said in a statement. 'Its right engine was overhauled in March 2025, and the left engine was inspected in April 2025. Both the aircraft and engines were regularly monitored, showing no issues before the flight,' the airline said. The London-bound jet burst into a fireball when it smashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad moments after takeoff. Initial checks since the crash on Air India's Dreamliners 'did not reveal any major safety concerns', the country's civil aviation regulator said Tuesday. India's aviation investigative unit said Thursday the probe was 'progressing steadily'. 'Key recovery work, including site documentation and evidence collection, has been completed, and further analysis is now underway,' the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said in a statement. Air India said there were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members. The airline said Thursday the pilots were accomplished flyers. 'The flight was led by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a highly experienced pilot and trainer with over 10,000 hours flying widebody aircraft,' it said. 'First Officer Clive Kunder, had over 3,400 hours of flying experience.' While investigators try to piece together what went wrong, families of dozens of victims are still waiting for their loved ones to be identified. The dead included people on the ground as the aircraft – headed for Gatwick Airport, south of the British capital – smashed into a medical college hostel during lunch hour. At least one passenger is known to have survived, police said, and the man told Indian media how he had heard a loud noise shortly after take-off. 'Approximately 260 have died. This includes some students as the plane crashed on the building where they were staying,' Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer, told Reuters. She said police found one survivor who was in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, adding that there could be more survivors in hospital. 'The nose and front wheel landed on the canteen building where students were having lunch,' he said. 'My sister-in-law was going to London. Within an hour, I got news that the plane had crashed,' Poonam Patel, a relative of one of the passengers, told news agency ANI at the government hospital in Ahmedabad. Ramila, the mother of a student at the medical college, told ANI her son had gone to the hostel for his lunch break when the plane crashed. 'My son is safe, and I have spoken to him. The US National Transportation Safety Board said it would lead a team of US investigators travelling to India to help in the investigation. Britain was working with Indian authorities to urgently establish the facts around the crash and to provide support to those involved, the country's foreign office said. 'The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us,' Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X. 'It is heartbreaking beyond words.' Gujarat is Modi's home state. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said images emerging of the crash were 'devastating', while King Charles III said he was 'desperately shocked'. Ahmedabad Airport, which suspended all flight operations after the crash, said it was operational again but with limited flights. The airport is operated by India's Adani Group conglomerate. The last fatal plane crash in India, the world's third largest aviation market and its fastest growing, was in 2020 and involved Air India Express, the airline's low-cost arm. The airline's Boeing-737 overshot a 'table-top' runway in southern India, skidded and plunged into a valley, crashing nose-first into the ground and killing 21 people. The formerly state-owned Air India was taken over by Indian conglomerate Tata Group in 2022, and merged with Vistara - a joint venture between the group and Singapore Airlines – in 2024. India has suffered other fatal air crashes, including a 1996 disaster when two jets collided mid-air over New Delhi, killing nearly 350 people.
