Physical sexual assault: Tahfiz student bound over on two-year good behaviour bond
KUALA LUMPUR: A tahfiz student who pleaded guilty to committing physical sexual assault on a child of a staff member of a tahfiz centre in Hulu Langat in April last year was bound over on a two-year good behaviour bond by the Ampang Magistrate's Court here today.
Magistrate Normaizan Rahim made the order and also imposed a bail of RM3,000 after examining the boy's probation report, which was submitted by the Social Welfare Department (JKM), at the proceeding, held in camera, today.
The court had set today for the sentencing.
Apart from that, Magistrate Normaizan also ordered the boy, who is now 18 years old, to undergo an interactive workshop organised by JKM and imposed a condition for him to be accompanied by his parents during the workshop.
The boy, who was then 17 years old, was charged with committing sexual physical assault on the victim, who was 13 years and eight months old, in April last year.
The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Lawyer A. Rahman Mohd Nasir represented the teenager, while the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani.

BEAUFORT: The public here are advised against entertaining beggars who approach for alms following reports of foreign nationals using deceptive tactics to solicit money. District Council Executive Officer Mohd Ainol Mohd Dun said these beggars employ various methods when asking for donations, remaining silent and only using papers written in Chinese characters. 'Clearly they are not Malaysian Chinese beggars but rather from foreign countries who may be looking to supplement their income,' he said. The warning came after a complaint from a local man who was dining at a coffee shop here on Friday. The complainant contacted authorities after encountering a beggar who went from table to table asking for alms without speaking, only using Chinese-written notes. 'It is quite rare for local Chinese to beg for alms in this State,' Mohd Ainol said, adding that he strongly discourages the public from giving donations to these fake beggars. He said begging is uncommon in the district, with neither local Malays nor Chinese engaging in such activities, suggesting these are likely Chinese nationals who have overstayed in the country. He said he had directed enforcement officers to track down the beggar, but the individual had disappeared and likely been picked up by a vehicle. If caught, the district council will hand them over to the Social Welfare Department and Immigration Department for further action. Several months ago, similar incidents occurred involving male and female beggars who appeared healthy and used flutes and saxophones while soliciting donations. These beggars operated even at the public market but fled when their activities were exposed. Four charged with trafficking liquid cocaine
Day in court: Four men, comprising a Malaysian and three Singapore nationals, being escorted to the Ampang Magistrate's Court on liquid cocaine trafficking charges. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Four men, comprising a Malaysian and three Singaporeans, were charged at the Ampang Magistrate's Court yesterday with trafficking liquid cocaine last week. Malaysian Kong Sien Mee, 57, and the three Singaporeans – Quek Kien Seng, 45, Tristan Chew Jin Zhong, 25, and Ivan Tan Zhi Xuan, 31, nodded when the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Amalina Basirah Md Top. However, no plea was recorded from all the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, Bernama reported. The four were jointly charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with trafficking 9420.2 ml of cocaine at the exit of a hotel here at 11.45am last June 19. They face the death sentence or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court set Sept 8 for mention and submission of the chemist's report. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Ramanathan Alias Ashwin, while the three Singaporeans were represented by lawyer Ille Maryam Yusnawannie. Kong was unrepresented. Meanwhile in Putrajaya, the Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence imposed on a man who murdered his nine-year-old daughter in 2018. A three-member bench consisting of Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Azman Abdullah and Azmi Ariffin dismissed an appeal by Mohammad Abdullah Mohamed against his conviction and sentence by the High Court. Deputy public prosecutor Datin Asmah Musa, appearing for the prosecution, and Mohammad Abdullah's lawyer Afifuddin Ahmad Hafifi, confirmed the court's decision to Bernama. Asmah said Justice Azmi, who delivered the court's decision, said that while the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 provides discretionary sentencing between 30 and 40 years, the court found the death sentence was appropriate after considering the aggravated and mitigating factors. According to the facts of the case, Mohammad Abdullah had instructed Nur Aina Nabihah and her other siblings to do 500 push-ups and sit-ups as punishment for failing to perform prayers. When his daughter became too weak to continue, he assaulted her.

Laos, US reaffirm commitment to combat human trafficking
Representatives from Laos and the United States sign a Memorandum of Understanding on a project to protect vulnerable groups against exploitation. - VT VIENTIANE: The governments of Laos and the United States of America have reaffirmed their commitment to combat human trafficking, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Phase IV of a project to support victims and people at risk of trafficking. The agreement was inked on Monday (June 26) between the Director General of Social Welfare Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Vongkham Phanthanouvong, and the Director of Village Focus International, Richard Reece. Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Phongxaysack Inthalath witnessed the signing. The initiative will be implemented at a cost of over US$1.58 million, supported by the US Department of State and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The project aims to empower victims of human trafficking and those vulnerable to exploitation by enhancing their access to education, vocational skills, and life skills training, leading to stable employment and reducing the risk of re-trafficking. The project will be implemented in Vientiane, and the provinces of Xayabouly, Luang Prabang, Salavan and Champasak. It will focus on protection and assistance, including the provision of safe shelters, healthcare services, vocational training, job creation, and employment opportunities for those at risk of trafficking, exploited labourers, survivors of violence, and victims of trafficking. The project will also teach people about safe migration and how to avoid being trafficked. The initiative will help to strengthen provincial, district, and village-level child rights protection committees, as well as relevant government partners, to assist at-risk workers and victims of trafficking. - Vientiane Times/ANN
