Gyokeres expected to join Man Utd as Haaland role emerges - 'I know him well'

Viktor Gyokeres is looking to head to Manchester United this summer according to singer and Coventry City fan Tom Grennan - who has remained friendly with the Sporting Lisbon star
Viktor Gyokeres will head to Manchester United this summer so that he can be neighbours with Erling Haaland according to musician Tom Grennan.
The Swede has excelled at Sporting Lisbon for the past two years, which has resulted in interest from around Europe. The Premier League is touted as his most likely destination with the Red Devils and Arsenal the two leading the race for his signature.

Gyokeres scored more than 50 goals last term and has been tipped to reunite with Amorim in Manchester after the Portuguese boss swapped Lisbon for Old Trafford midway through the campaign.

United are looking to bolster their forward line and Gyokeres would be able to supply goals on a regular basis. His career has skyrocketed since he left Championship side Coventry City. Grennan is a fan of the Sky Blues and remains good pals with their former striker.
He said on the BBC podcast You About?: "I know him well. I actually messaged him and he said that there's different conversations going on. Do you know who his best friend is? Haaland. That is why I think he'll go to Manchester United because he'll be next door to Haaland."
Haaland has been hugely impressive and successful during his three years in England. He's just missed out on the Premier League title for the first time but has broken numerous records since swapping Borussia Dortmund for Manchester City.
Those on the blue half of Manchester remain the city's dominant force and finished some 29 points ahead of United. Amorim is tasked with making the Red Devils a winning-outfit once more and adding Gyokeres would help their chances and the striker has an agreement to leave the club.
However it is understood that Gyokeres has been left fuming with Sporting after they demanded more for him than they promised as he looks for a way out of the Portuguese club. The Lisbon outfit have been demanding £67million for him. Previously they agreed that they would demand £50m plus £8.4m in add-ons this summer - meaning they asked for almost £10m more, reports Record.
The Swede recently addressed his future and said: 'Let us see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.'

New report calls for eight-week break and mid-season rest for footballers

The call for minimum protections to be introduced worldwide comes as some of the world's top stars prepare to take part in the newly-expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which starts on Saturday. The tournament does not end until July 13, meaning Manchester City and Chelsea players could have a gap of just five weeks before the new Premier League season kicks off on August 16. That is two weeks less than the minimum off-season rest and retraining period a group of 70 medical and performance experts have recommended in a new study. England head coach Thomas Tuchel said earlier this week that the demands placed on City and Chelsea by the Club World Cup will hand a 'huge advantage' to Liverpool and Arsenal in next season's Premier League title race. The European division of world players' union FIFPRO and Europe's leagues have taken legal action against FIFA over what they see as a lack of consultation by the game's global governing body over the fixture calendar. The scheduling of the Club World Cup within that calendar has been described as a 'tipping point' in the debate by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters. The expert group has put forward 12 'position statements' on player welfare as part of the Delphi Study, which they feel should be adopted worldwide as minimum welfare standards. These included a mandatory four-week off-season break, and within that a two-week blackout period where clubs and national teams should have no contact at all with players. There should then be a minimum four-week retraining period after the off-season break before resuming competitive football. Mid-season breaks should last a minimum of one week, experts said. Premier League players will not benefit from any mid-season break next season, as was the case in 2024-25. A pause was introduced in the 2019-20 season but was dropped before the start of the season just ended, due to the expansion of international competitions like UEFA's Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Building solutions together.#FIFPRO Europe, @UEFA, @ECAEurope, @EuropeanLeagues, and player unions gathered to align on player welfare, workload management, and match calendar congestion.#UCL | #UCLfinal — FIFPRO (@FIFPRO) May 30, 2025 The 12 position statements were agreed with the consensus of at least 75 per cent of the experts involved. Among the other statements were calls for mandatory consideration of the travel burden on players and the impact of long-haul flights, as well as specific workload safeguards for under-18 players. Dr Vincent Gouttebarge, the medical director of FIFPRO, said: 'This study presents safety standards based on the considered and independent opinions of medical and performance experts working in professional football who understand the mental and physical strain placed on players. 'If we can all agree that health comes first, then we should take steps to implement these safeguards.'

8 most prolific divers in England's top divisions revealed

The West Country team recorded eight yellow cards for simulation, the most of any team over the course of the past three seasons. Premier League giant Chelsea followed with seven bookings for taking a tumble – the same number as Burton Albion. Manchester City, Newcastle United, Crawley Town, Accrington Stanley and Barrow have been reprimanded six times each after being caught trying to con the ref. (Image: SWNS) Football statistician Statman Dave ran the numbers as part of Snickers' wider Off Your Game campaign, with the Deep Diving Audit offering a data-led look at diving across English football. Dave O'Brien, who pored over match footage, referee reports and extensive game insights to reveal all the most dramatic diving data, said: 'Diving has always been a part of the game, but when you look at the numbers, like I've done for Snickers' Deep Diving Audit, it's clear that some clubs and players really know how to keep things interesting. 'Whether it's tactical, instinctive, or maybe even hunger-related, one thing is for sure, when players are off their game, it shows. 'And sometimes, it's not just the ball that goes rolling.' Nearly all cases of diving occurred in the second half, with a particular uptick during the 90th minute – and 70 per cent of dives took place in the penalty area. With Brighton & Hove Albion being named as the club players have dived against most in the Premier League. Strikers are responsible for 26 per cent of all dives over the last three seasons, whereas in defence, only one centre-back was carded for a diving offence. Looking at the 2024/25 campaign specifically, 75 per cent of dives occurred when the players' team wasn't winning, with the average dive last season lasting nine seconds. Additionally, the average diving age is 22, they most typically wear white boots – and are also English, with these players making up 42 per cent of dives in the season just gone. Diving in the men's game is significantly more prominent compared to the women's – with just one diving booking found on record from the last three seasons in the Women's Super League. Snickers has enlisted football experts Statman Dave and Nada Allali to create a video which uncovers the most over-the-top tumbles across the England's top leagues. Delia Lendais-Metral from the chocolate brand said: 'Let's face it, when you're hungry, you're not quite yourself. 'The Snickers Deep Diving Audit taps into those moments when things go slightly off, on or off the pitch.' 'Whether it's a mis-timed slide or a full-blown flop, this is a fun reminder that staying fuelled helps keep you on your game.'
