Pravind Jugnauth: Mauritius ex-PM out on bail after being charged with money laundering
Mauritius' former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has been released on bail following his dramatic arrest on Saturday on money laundering charges. He had been detained along with three others after the anti-corruption agency said it had seized suitcases of cash and luxury watches in raids on 10 locations, including Jugnauth's home.The former prime minister's lawyer said he denied the charges against him. Jugnauth's arrest came 100 days after his landslide defeat in elections, with his successor Navin Ramgoolam vowing to root out corruption. But few Mauritians expected the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) to move so quickly, or to arrest the former prime minister on such serious charges.
Some people took to the streets of the capital, Port Louis, to celebrate by lighting firecrackers, while a handful of his supporters turned up outside court on Monday to show their solidarity with him, chanting: "Pravin! Pravin!"His wife Kobita - who is not facing the charges - was released after being questioned for hours by investigators on Saturday. Her 63-year-old husband spent the night in a detention centre, before a magistrate granted him bail late on Sunday, setting it at $32,000 (£26,000).Jugnauth's co-accused - two prominent businesspeople and a deputy mayor - are still in detention, pending the outcome of their bail applications. Their lawyers have not yet commented on the charges against them. About $2.4m in local and foreign currencies - including US dollars, euros and UAE dirhams - were seized during the raids, FCC spokesperson Ibrahim Rossaye said. Seven luxury watches, including five high-end Cartier timepieces, were also confiscated, he added. As part of his bail conditions, Jugnauth has been ordered not to contact witnesses or to interfere with them. He must also stay at a fixed address and must inform the police if he decides to relocate.Jugnauth was the prime minister from 2017 to 2024 and is a member of one of the dynasties that has dominated politics in Mauritius.In a sign of the deep dissatisfaction with his administration, his Lepep alliance was routed in November's parliamentary election, winning only two seats compared to the 42 in the 2019 election.Jugnauth oversaw a historic deal with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the future of the Chagos Islands.The agreement aims to settle the long-standing sovereignty dispute over the islands, but his successor has accused him of negotiating a bad deal and has reopened talks.

Everything we know as body found near UK airport in car 'abandoned for months'
A dead body was found in the back seat of a car parked near Gatwick Airport on Friday - locals claimed the car had been abandoned for months and was covered in dust A dead body has shockingly been discovered in the back seat of a car parked close to Gatwick Airport. The white BMW had reportedly been parked just a mile away from the major airport for months, but the corpse was only discovered on Friday. Ticket inspectors were also believed to have been in the area and slapped notices on the vehicle but failed to see the dead body inside the car. Forensic officers were spotted at the scene along with police as an investigation to establish how the person died and how their lifeless body was missed has been launched. How was the body found? The car was noticed after locals sent Crawley Borough Council multiple complaints to report a parking violation. The local council issued a warning notice on May 19 and detailed how the car was "untaxed", even slapping a note on the car that threatened it would be towed unless moved in a week. Despite this, the car is taxed until January 1, 2026, according to the government's vehicle tax site, and has a valid MOT until November 25. It is understood the alarm was raised by a recovery vehicle driver who went to take the car away. They called police to report a possible dead body inside the vehicle. How did the recovery vehicle driver spot the body? A person in a local Facebook group described the moment the recovery vehicle driver found the dead body. They claimed the driver "saw a man on the back seats, with a blanket over the front two seats to build a 'barrier' across as he was lying on the backseat - most likely was sleeping in the back". Another person added: "A recovery driver came this morning and smashed the back window to take the motor. As he did that he noticed the dead body on the back seats." Where was the dead body found? The vehicle was parked around a mile away from Gatwick Airport. It had been left at an industrial estate on Whittle Way in Crawley, around 2.3 miles away from Junction 10 of the M23. This road is home to several businesses and close to Parcelforce Worldwide's airport depot. How long has the body been there? It is unclear exactly how long the dead body had been left in the car - which was covered in dust. Some locals claimed the vehicle had been parked in the same spot since October last year. Other residents in a Facebook group shared how long they had seen the vehicle parked for. One person said: "I reported it about four months ago but the council only put stickers on it - but it has been there for eight months now." How did the person die? The circumstances around the tragic death have not been made public. It is unclear how the person died but Sussex Police confirmed the death is not currently being treated as suspicious. What have the police said? Police revealed an investigation into the shock discovery has been launched. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Police were called to Whittle Way in Northgate, Crawley, at around 10.30am on Friday, 6 June, to reports of a body found in a vehicle. "Enquiries are ongoing to identify the individual and establish the full circumstances of the situation."

The deputy leader of Reform UK doubled down on his party's recent attack advert against Scottish Labour, which has been widely condemned as "racist", during the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme. The political advert, which was seen by more than one million people on Facebook, falsely claimed that Sarwar would 'prioritise the Pakistani community'. READ MORE: Scottish Government urges Chancellor to drop 'damaging' cuts ahead of spending review The ad includes selected clips from a video spread by far and alt-right agitators on social media in a bid to claim that Europe was under threat from 'multiculturalism' and mass immigration, specifically of Muslims. While it has been branded "racist" by both the SNP and Scottish Labour, Farage doubled down and went on to tell a press conference in London that Sarwar had "introduced sectarianism into Scottish politics". During the programme on Sunday, Kuenssberg asked Tice about his party leader's comments, saying: "Your leader Nigel Farage claimed that the Muslim Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar had said that he would prioritise the Pakistani community. "He did not use those words. Was Nigel Farage's claim false?" Tice refused to be drawn on whether the claim was false, as he said: "No, look, what we would talk about was that actually, the Labour leader in Scotland was essentially sort of developing sectarian politics, and we called that out. "We had the Scottish by-election and we came within 750 people of winning it. "So the ridiculous claims made by the other main politicians in Scotland about us, frankly, the voters have just ignored, and we came within a whisker of an absolute shock, a seismic shock. Richard Tice "We got 26%, it was a three-way marginal, and I think Scottish politics is changing." Reform UK came third in Thursday's Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, with their candidate Ross Lambie winning 7088 votes. The party won 26.2% of the vote share but were 1471 votes away from beating Scottish Labour's Davy Russell, not 750 votes as Tice – who was at the count – claimed on Sunday. Tice went on: "We had a very simple slogan that seemed to work. 'Drill, Scotland, drill'. The oil and gas industry generates huge prosperity for Scotland, for the United Kingdom, and we should be embracing it and enhancing it, not shutting it down, which the Labour Government has essentially followed what the Tories did before with the ridiculous windfall tax." Kuenssberg returned to Farage's claims about the Scottish Labour leader, as she asked: "Do you not think it's important to say things that are true in politics? "Mr Farage claimed that Anas Sarwar had used words that he simply did not. He made a false claim on a sensitive issue. Was he wrong to do that?" Tice then doubled down on his party's claims about Sarwar bringing in sectarianism into Scottish politics. "No, look, it is sensitive, you're right," he said. "But was it right for Mr Sarwar to claim that Pakistanis and the South Asian community should, for example, dominate and dictate the Scottish educational agenda?" Kuenssberg interrupted: "My question to you is whether or not it was right for Mr Farage to make a false claim about words Anas Sarwar did not use?" Tice said: "Well, you can interpret. I think in the overall context it was not a false claim. "It was what Mr Sarwar was doing, which was bringing sectarian politics into Scottish politics. And that is wrong, that's not how we do things." First Minister John Swinney said at the time that Farage had "brought racism and hatred" into the by-election campaign, as the SNP submitted a formal complaint to Meta, Facebook's parent company. Meanwhile, Sarwar branded Farage a "poisonous man who doesn't understand Scotland". Scottish Labour have been contacted for comment.
