Offaly too strong for Wicklow in Tailteann Cup opener
Offaly recorded a very important win when they were too strong for Wicklow in the opening round of the Tailteann Cup in Tullamore on Saturday afternoon.
The 2-13 to 0-11 win draws a line under a dreadful run in the second tier competition. They had lost their last five games in it and last year's abysmal defeats by London and Limerick piled pressure on everyone, and were a definite factor in Mickey Harte being drafted in as joint manager alongside Declan Kelly.
Offaly certainly didn't set the world on fire here and this performance won't win the Tailteann Cup but it was absolutely crucial that they won and it gives them something to build on.
There will be greater tests ahead but it puts them in pole position for qualification from the group and Offaly's appetite was of a sufficiently high level to suggest that they do want to give this a real go.
Goals at each end of the half from Diarmuid Egan and Jack Bryant helped Offaly to a half time lead of 2-06 to 0-08 that flattered them a small bit.
Egan's fourth minute goal after a Jordan Hayes run gave them a 1-00 to 0-01 lead but Wicklow had a huge amount of possession for the next 15 minutes plus. Offaly defended well but Wicklow's pressure had to yield a dividend and they led by 0-05 to 1-01 after 13 minutes. A two point free from goalie Mark Jackson gave them a 0-07 to 1-01 lead after 26 minutes and Offaly's attack finally got motoring coming up to half time.
Jack Bryant got an excellent two pointer as they grabbed a 1-06 to 0-07 lead and after Mark Kenny got a Wicklow point, Offaly broke for a great goal in injury time. Cathal Flynn booted in a pin point pass over the top and Jack Bryant finished very neatly to give Offaly that interval advantage.
Offaly scarcely deserved to be four points up at the break but that margin changed the game. It meant that Wicklow had to chase it and Offaly were able to contain them with considerable ease in a second half that never ignited.
Without doing anything special but attacking with enough menace to open up Wicklow, Offaly controlled much of the game. They were helped by some wayward Wicklow shooting but they never looked like losing in the second half. 2-09 to 0-09 up after 48 minutes, Offaly had a 2-11 to 0-10 lead after 55 and that was always going to be a big enough cushion to get them home.
They did leave the door open a bit longer than they should have and Dylan Hyland had a 58th minute penalty saved by Mark Jackson, after man of the match Jack Bryant was fouled. Jackson was wide with a two-point free at the other end moments later and had he converted that and reduced the gap to four points, it may have brought Wicklow back into it.
Instead Dylan Hyland's 61st minute point pushed the gap back out to seven and Wicklow never looked like salvaging it late on – the closest they came to a goal was when a two point free attempt from Oisin McGraynor hit the post in the 69th minute and almost ended up in the net but Offaly would still have been able to hold on at that stage.

Tailteann Cup: Limerick and Wicklow march on to join Kildare and Fermanagh in semi-finals
There is a first semi-final appearance in the Tailteann Cup for Limerick , Wicklow , Fermanagh and Kildare , who were all winners over the weekend. Next Sunday will see this quartet play the semi-finals at Croke Park. Limerick, thanks to two goals apiece from Cillian Fahy and Danny Neville pulled clear of Wexford on home soil. Despite goals from Mark Rossiter and Sean Nolan, Wexford were 4-21 to 2-19 in arrears at full-time having kicked six two-pointers. Key to Limerick's success were nine points from talisman James Naughton, while rising talent Emmet Rigter kicked three points from play. They had trailed by five, then led by six before being drawn back to level thanks to Nolan's shooting, but they stepped on the gas in the second half to pull comfortably clear. READ MORE In Aughrim, Wicklow had a most dramatic victory over Westmeath. Trailing by eight points, they prevailed on home soil on a 2-18 to 2-17 scoreline, as Dean Healy kicked a late, late winner. An early Shane Allen goal was soon cancelled out by Oisin McGraynor but Luke Loughlin, Ray Connellan and Ronan Wallace all pointed for Westmeath, with a 15th-minute goal from Sam McCartan really putting them in control. Indeed it got better in the second half as Robbie Forde and Loughlin both kicked two pointers, however, Mark Jackson matched this at the other end, from a free. Eoin Darcy and then a goal from a penalty – McGraynor again – ensured parity. There was plenty of more drama in the closing stages, with Loughlin and McCartan re-establishing the four point lead, only for the final five points to go to Oisin McConville's men. Conor Fee, Jackson (two-pointer) and Padraig O'Toole levelled the game allowing Healy the chance to win it at the death. On Saturday, Fermanagh edged by Sligo 0-21 to 1-16. The result marks a final game in charge of the Yeats County for Tony McEntee who stepped down after the loss. Fermanagh had ten different scorers with Garvan Hughes top scoring with 0-5. Sligo, who had 1-4 from Niall Murphy, looked well placed when they led by four at the end of the opening quarter, thanks to Murphy's goal. However Jones and his colleagues fought back and it was 0-14 to 1-6 by half-time. Fionan O'Brien and Declan McCusker kept the Ulster side ahead with Pat Spillane setting up a tense finish with a two-pointer, but there was to be no equaliser in Brewster Park. Favourites Kildare edged a derby with Offaly, which meant that all four home sides, who had a week off, prevailed in these quarter-finals. A tight 1-17 to 0-19 win at Cedral St. Conleth's Park in Newbridge keeps the Lillywhites in the title hunt, with Alex Beirne continuing his fine scoring form, totting up 0-7. Leading by two at half-time, James McGrath's goal the difference. Offaly stayed in the contest with Jordan Hayes' brace of two pointers but Beirne and Mick O'Grady answered at the other end. A late two-point effort, which could have seen Offaly prevail, drifted wide. Superb James Naughton leads Limerick into Tailteann Cup semi-finals as they cruise past Wexford
Limerick have reached the semi-finals of the Tailteann Cup for the first time following a 4-21 to 2-19 victory over Wexford at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Two goals apiece for captain Cillian Fahy and Danny Neville sent Limerick on their way with star forward James Naughton chipping in with nine points in an impressive outing for the Treatymen. Sean Nolan fired over 1-07 for John Hegarty's Wexford charges that started the game with the opening five points. Jack Higgins kicked the opening score and followed up with a two pointer. Nolan and Pairic Hughes also hit the target before Limerick got going. Darragh O'Hagan got them on the board with Naughton and Neville making it a two-point gap with 11 minutes on the clock. Naughton and Paul Maher soon squared the game up for the first time before Fahy fired the opening goal after good work from Neville. Limerick added a second on 21 minutes with Darren O'Doherty and Mark McCarthy combining to set up Neville for a goal that saw Jimmy Lee's men 2-06 to 0-07 in front. Fahy was at it again five minutes later after Emmet Rigter and Nash bamboozled the Wexford defence and the Limerick captain flashed a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. However, Wexford fought back in the remaining minutes of the half and it was Nolan to the fore. He kicked 1-05 to draw his side level at half time. The score at 3-08 to 1-14. Limerick had the advantage of a strong gale in the second half and made immediate use of it thanks to a two-point free scored by Naughton. Naughton and Nolan traded blows but Limerick continued to dominate and kept the scoreboard ticking over with Mark McCarthy the latest to hit the target. Mark Rossiter did give Wexford hope of a comeback on 47 minutes with a well-taken goal but Neville's response soon after brought those hopes to an immediate stop. Rigter, Naughton, Bob Childs all hit the target as the game opened up as Wexford went on the goal hunt but it was Limerick that cruised home to a an eight-point winning margin. Powerful Monaghan finish defeats Down to book All-Ireland quarter-final spot
Monaghan 2-27 Down 1-26 Paul Keane reports from Armagh FOUR POINTS DOWN with 20 minutes to go, Monaghan turned a tricky situation into a hugely significant four-point All-Ireland SFC win for themselves, propelling them through to the quarter-finals as group winners. Jack McCarron's half-time introduction was vital in Armagh where the Farney claimed top spot in Group 3 and a last eight place in a fortnight. In what was a thrilling shoot-out for top spot between the two sides with perfect records in the group, Tailteann Cup holders Down led by that four-point margin with 50 minutes on the clock. But Monaghan, All-Ireland SFC semi-finalists just two seasons ago, showed all their big game experience to turn things around and McCarron's goal really got them going. The ciotog attacker added another two-pointer, as well as a single, to take his tally to 1-3 as the Farney squeezed Down out. Boss Gabriel Bannigan may be a little alarmed at just how many scoring opportunities they coughed up to a livewire Down side who picked off 1-26. But with a dozen different scorers, and tonnes of experience in this Monaghan team, he will still believe that they can go deep into the All-Ireland series as they excel under the new rules. All is not lost for Conor Laverty's Down as they will still advance to an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final next weekend as runners up in Group 3. Pat Havern hit a dozen points for the 2010 finalists but they will rue a couple of late missed opportunities as they fought desperately to reel Monaghan in. Both sides had been putting up big scores in the group stage so an open, attacking game was always anticipated and we weren't let down. The first-half alone yielded a combined 2-29 with Down edging it by 1-15 to 1-14. Monaghan edged the two-point count in that half, four to three, with goalkeeper Rory Beggan drilling two long-range frees. Advertisement Conor McCarthy and Michael McCarville curled over two beauties as well though the Farney's early 0-6 to 0-3 lead didn't last long. Down were slightly better at sweeping up the breaking ball and created chance after chance for themselves. They scored one goal, through John McGeough in the 21st minute, but could have had a couple more. The McGeough goal came at the end of a speedy move up the field, a Danny Magill kick-pass up to the influential Ryan McEvoy followed by another 30m kick pass into McGeough who finished smartly. But Beggan pulled off a great save to deny Magill a goal in the 30th minute, diving full length to his left to tip over. Murdock fired just over close to half-time while Monaghan defender Ryan Wylie twice blocked goalbound efforts from James Guinness and Murdock. Havern had a thrilling duel with Scotstown's Ryan O'Toole. O'Toole conceded 0-5 to Havern from play and the Down free-taker filled his boots from placed balls too, converting his second two-point free in the 43rd minute to leave Down 1-20 to 1-16 ahead at that stage. They started the second-half strongly but suddenly found themselves in Monaghan's slipstream again as the promoted Division 2 team rallied. Half-time substitute McCarron pulled Monaghan back with a 50th minute goal, finishing at the third attempt after McCarthy and Bannigan had gone close. McCarron butchered a second goal chance soon after as the ball hit the post and bounced out to safety. But the experienced attacker slotted a brilliant two-pointer in the 58th minute to tie a pulsating game up yet again, 2-21 to 1-24. Monaghan brought all their big game know-how to bear in the closing 15 minutes or so as they managed the contest superbly, picking off points from O'Toole, Beggan and substitute David Garland to keep Down just about at arm's length.
