SINGAPORE/GENTING HIGHLANDS (The Straits Times/ANN): Four Singaporean tourists were injured in an accident near Malaysia's Genting Highlands on June 8, with the driver of the pickup truck that collided with their car arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene.
The accident happened at around 4.50pm at the Pahang section of Jalan Genting Permai towards the middle of the highlands, reported Malaysian daily China Press.
The Singaporeans were being driven in a private-hire Perodua Myvi when they were involved in a collision with a pickup truck driven by a man described as a non-Malaysian. The Toyota pickup was ferrying three passengers.
In photos from China Press, the right side of the grey Myvi's front bumper and headlamp are seen to be badly damaged. The car is parked on a patch of grass next to the road.
The photos show that at least two of the tourists required assistance and were wearing neck or leg braces.
The Myvi driver was unharmed, China Press reported.
The driver of the pickup truck had driven away from the location of the accident in an apparent attempt to escape, according to the report.
The local police tracked him down and later arrested him. - The Straits Times/ANN

Singaporean man jailed for taking upskirt photos of MRT commuter
SINGAPORE: A 26-year-old Singaporean man who recently got married has been sentenced to 28 days in jail after he was caught taking upskirt photographs of a female commuter on the MRT. Lai Zi Yang pleaded guilty to one count of voyeurism, with investigations revealing that he had taken more than 100 similar images of other women, stored on his phone. On Nov 1, 2024, Lai was accused of using his mobile phone to discreetly take 14 upskirt images of a woman while on an escalator at Tampines MRT station. He had allegedly positioned the phone on his knee with the camera lens angled upwards, targeting the victim standing in front of him. "A fellow commuter witnessed the act, confronted Lai, and informed the victim, who then filed a police report," The Straits Times (ST) reported. Deputy Public Prosecutor Teng Yin Hang told the court that Lai was travelling from Jalan Besar to meet a friend for dinner when the incident occurred. ST reported that Lai was tempted to act upon seeing the woman in a skirt, a compulsion he admitted to experiencing regularly when in proximity to women in short skirts. Subsequent investigations uncovered that Lai had committed similar offences against at least 10 other women. "Over 100 voyeuristic images were found in a password-protected folder on his phone. "Lai told investigators he would transfer the images into the secure folder, which would then delete them automatically from his photo gallery. He admitted to viewing the images when alone at home or in the toilet." Lai's lawyer, Low Chun Yee, said in mitigation that his client had only recently married and was awaiting the keys to his Build-To-Order (BTO) flat. "He is fully aware that what he did was wrong and has since sought voluntary treatment. He intends to continue with therapy," Low said. District Judge John Ng, in passing sentence, noted the pattern of Lai's offending behaviour and the number of images found during the investigation. The judge emphasised that such offences are notoriously difficult to detect and stressed the importance of sending a strong deterrent message to others. Under Singapore law, individuals convicted of voyeurism face up to two years in prison, a fine, caning, or any combination of these penalties.

Malaysia Bus Crash Kills at Least 15, Mostly Students
Thirteen victims died at the scene near the town of Gerik, on the busy East-West Highway near the Thai border, while two died in hospital, Arab News reported. The accident is the deadliest in more than a decade on Malaysias hazardous roads. It looked like the bus had lost control and hit the (minivan) from behind, Perak State Police Chief Hisam Nordin said. Images from the scene taken by the fire and rescue department showed a green bus overturned on its right side with a smashed rear end cover, while the red minivan had slid into a ditch, with its windows blown out. Some victims managed to get out on their own, some victims were thrown out while others were still (trapped) in the bus, the Perak state disaster management authority said in a statement. Rescuers had to use a hydraulic cutter to free people from the bus. The death toll included 14 students from the Sultan Idris Education University, while the last victim was a bus attendant, the emergency services said. Thirty-three others were injured, with seven in critical condition taken to hospital, it added. Most of the victims were aged between 21 and 23. They were traveling from the town of Jerteh in northeastern Malaysia when the accident happened shortly after 1:00 am (1700 GMT on Sunday). Police Chief Hisam said officers were investigating whether the crash involved human negligence or if it was a technical issue. A witness told the New Straits Times it was a chaotic scene with students screaming and crying for help. They were pinned between the wreckage, the witness, identified as Razali, told the paper. Malaysias Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered the Higher Education Ministry to help the victims families and said he and his wife Azizah were deeply saddened by the tragedy. Heartbreaking disasters like these that are repeated often should be a lesson to all to be careful and not to rush, Anwar wrote on Facebook. Your lives are too precious and cant be replaced, he added. Malaysia has a high rate of traffic accidents, with an average of 18 people killed on the roads each day, according to government figures. The East-West Highway, which connects the two seaboards of the Malaysian peninsula, is plagued by accidents, with frequent collisions between animals and vehicles. Malaysia's worst bus disaster happened in 2013 when an express bus plunged down a ravine northeast of Kuala Lumpur, killing 37.
