NFL insider says Falcons attempted to sign Pro Bowl cornerback
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Falcons tried to sign Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander
The Atlanta Falcons spent much of the 2025 NFL offseason addressing their pass rush and secondary. The team drafted first-round edge rushers Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., re-signed cornerback Mike Hughes, and stole playmaking safety Xavier Watts in the third round.
Despite these moves, the Falcons weren't satisfied with their defense. According to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Atlanta was in the mix to sign former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander before he ended up with the Baltimore Ravens.
"Falcons, he was considering," said Fowler. "Miami Dolphins, he was also considering, but Baltimore had the clear edge throughout that process."
Alexander, 28, was released a few weeks ago by the Green Bay Packers in a move that shocked the rest of the league. The former first-round pick reportedly had his pick of teams to choose from but signed with Baltimore after visiting his free-agent visit.
Atlanta made sense as a possible landing spot, mostly due to Alexander's ties to Falcons assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray. Before joining Atlanta's coaching staff in 2023, Gray coached Alexander when he was the Packers defensive backs coach.
"Gray served as the defensive backs/passing game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 2021-22," wrote AtlantaFalcons.com in Gray's coaching profile. "In his three seasons (2020-22) with Green Bay, the Packers finished in the top 10 in passing defense in all three years."
Alexander would have been a nice addition to a Falcons secondary that already features A.J. Terrell and Jessie Bates III. Financially, it wouldn't have made a ton of sense for a cash-strapped Atlanta team, but Alexander's talent is undeniable.
Over his seven NFL seasons, Alexander had made two Pro Bowls and recorded 12 interceptions in 78 career games (76 starts).

In an interview shortly after his trade was reported by ESPN's NBA insider Shams Charania, All-Star forwrd Kevin Durant said he is 'very happy' and 'looking forward' to being part of the Houston Rockets. Durant found out about the blockbuster trade while on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York. Shortly after leaving the stage, Durant spoke with reporter Kay Adams, who asked about his desire to join the Rockets. 'They had a great season (52-30, No. 2 in the Western Conference) last year,' said Durant, who has long respected head coach Ime Udoka. 'I love their leadership. I felt like I would be a good addition.' 'Crazy, crazy last couple weeks, but I'm glad it's over with,' Durant continued. 'I had an idea, but I didn't know exactly when it was gonna happen. Durant said he 'most definitely' had a hand in the trade, and he hopes it works out for both Houston and his former franchise in Phoenix. 'They got what they wanted, and I got what I wanted, so we can move on,' Durant said of the Suns. 'Good luck to them moving forward. I'll always remember my time there, but we're on to something else.' More: Rockets trade for Kevin Durant in deal involving Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, draft equity

Sam Darnold makes eye-opening admission about how things ended with Vikings
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold reflected on his ending with the Minnesota Vikings. Speaking in a recent interview with The Athletic, Darnold admitted the offseason exit was 'tough to swallow,' acknowledging expectations and his own shortcomings down the stretch. Despite an impressive, overachieving regular season, the Vikings greatly underwhelmed in the playoffs, losing 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round. 'For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense,' Darnold said. 'And I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don't win the whole thing, you failed. 'I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you. I feel I didn't play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would've been able to give the team a chance.' Sam Darnold was a Pro Bowler last year. Getty Images Darnold, who signed a one-year, $10 million 'prove-it' deal in March 2024 with Minnesota, became the starter for a team expected to be one of the worst in the NFC and likely to turn to rookie first-rounder JJ McCarthy, who missed the season with an injury, at some point. Darnold put together career-highs with 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, a 102.5 passer rating and his first Pro Bowl selection. The Vikings surged to an impressive 14–3 record, with Darnold proving to be a steadying presence during the regular season, but lost 31-9 to the Lions in the final week to miss out on the division title. Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 regular season. Getty Images The breakout led to a three-year deal with Seattle worth north of $100 million. 'I think without a doubt, he's got his best football ahead of him,' former Rams receiver and current Seahawk teammate Cooper Kupp told The Athletic. 'I love his competitiveness. He's not OK with things being just OK.' Darnold added, 'I learned a lot last season, from those two games especially. At the end of the day, you go through those experiences, you learn, and you get better. I try every single day to get better. That's it.'

(AP Photo/Brynn Anderson) PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Scuffling catcher Francisco Alvarez was demoted to the minors by the New York Mets on Sunday. The team optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Hayden Senger from its top farm club before Sunday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Advertisement Senger will back up Luis Torrens, who replaces Alvarez as New York's primary catcher. The move comes after Alvarez went 2 for 5 with a 452-foot home run late in Saturday night's 11-4 victory over Philadelphia, which snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Mets. But he is batting only .236 with three homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS in 35 games this year. Alvarez was activated April 25 after beginning the season on the injured list with a hamate fracture in his left hand, and he missed two games this month while on the paternity list. The 23-year-old Alvarez, once rated baseball's best minor league prospect, had 25 homers and 63 RBIs with a .721 OPS as a rookie in 2023. Advertisement Senger, 28, made his major league debut for the Mets this season and was batting .179 (5 for 28) in 13 big league games. New York began the day tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East. ___ AP MLB:
