Indian Express9 hours ago

Four members of the inter-state Khekda gang were arrested on Saturday in connection with the theft of 700 metres of wire cabling, worth Rs 17.85 lakh, from the metro station near the Juna Koba Metro station in Gandhinagar on June 2, said Gandhinagar police.
Police identified the accused as Musharraf Irshad Mulejat (32), Rashid Ishaq Ishmael Dhobi (21), Rashid Abdulaziz Shabbir Ansari (45) and Irshad Majid Allahmehar Malik Teli (33), all residents of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh
The theft had come to the fore late night on June 2 after the IPL cricket match got over, said police. The Juna Koba Metro station falls in the jurisdiction of Infocity police station.
Soon after the theft, SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty had set up four teams, including officials from the Local Crime Branch (LCB) to crack the case.
While probing the CCTV footage, the police identified two suspicious looking vehicles, said officials.
After the police managed to extract the registration plates of the two vehicles, they found the owner of the vehicles who gave them the names of the accused persons, said the police.
Meanwhile, the LCB personnel received a tip-off about the accused being present in Kalol town of Gandhinagar.
The police reached the spot and arrested the accused while recovering several pieces of the copper cables.
The accused have been arrested under BNSS Sections 35(1)(e) (right to arrest without warranty) 35(1)(e) (right to arrest without warranty) and 106(1) (seizure of property).
A statement from Gandhinagar Police on Saturday said that when the four men were questioned, they allegedly revealed 'the role of a total 13 persons involved in the theft of the cables'. The accused also confessed to have stolen copper cables from the Shahpur Metro station on May 22, said the police statement. According to the police, one of the accused — Masoom Yasin Malik — along with another set of thieves, was involved in stealing cables from Gyaspur Metro station.
Apart from theft of Metro cables in Gujarat, the accused also allegedly confessed to theft of the same material from Metro projects across the country. The accused have carried out similar theft 14 times in Delhi; 12 times in Pune and six times in Panvel of Navi Mumbai, both in Maharashtra. They also confessed to thefts in Indore and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh.
The Gandhinagar police named 11 others, still absconding, as part of this Khekda gang. One of the accused, identified as Raja Qureshi, said the police, was allegedly involved in almost all the thefts across various states. He was also their buyer and financed the thefts, said the police.
Modus Operandi
The Gandhinagar police said that the accused used to target Metro projects across India. They would first book hotel rooms near the stations and hire cars. They would then approach a real estate broker to rent a house where they could stash their stolen material, said the police.
They would then conduct their reconnaissance along the Metro route. After deciding on an appropriate spot, they would park their rented vehicles near a pillar and use a tree to make a zipline to the top of the pillar to reach the tracks, according to the police. They would then cut the cables using large cutters and load them onto their vehicles and hide the loot in their rented house, said the police.
They would then make the effort to pry the copper cabling from the rubber insulation, pack it in parcels and then send them to Delhi in parcels through the railways. They would then sell it in Delhi, said the police.
A police probe into the matter is ongoing and the cops are trying to arrest the other members of the gang in coordination with police officials in other states.

‘Photo opportunity cost': Father of Bengaluru stampede victim refuses to leave son's grave

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden IPL victory in 18 years – which was anticipated to be a grand celebration – turned ghastly, leaving at least 11 people dead and 47 injured after a stampede broke out at the gates of the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Still, beyond the statistics lie heartbreaking stories, such as that of a father seen in a viral video clinging to his son's grave in anguish. The video doing the rounds on social media shows BT Lakshman – father of 21-year-old Bhumik Lakshman, who died in the stampede – crying inconsolably at his son's grave, refusing to leave him, in their native village in Hassan district. 'What happened to my son should not happen to anyone,' he says, lying on the ground with his head pressed against the grave. 'The land I had bought for him is where his memorial has been built.' Refusing to let go, Lakshman adds, 'I don't want to go anywhere else now. I want to stay here too,' as two men approach and help him to his feet. 'No father should have to face what I am facing,' he says. Bhumik, a final-year engineering student, was among the thousands who had gathered outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday to celebrate and catch a glimpse of the RCB players after their historic IPL title win – the team's first in 18 years. Tragically, he was one of the 11 people, including a 14-year-old girl, who lost their lives in the resulting stampede. The video of Mr Lakshman at his son's grave was also shared by the Karnataka unit of the BJP, which has accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of being 'murderous.' 'Murderous CM @siddaramaiah sir, murderous DCM @DKShivakumar sir, if you had made up your mind, you could have taken a photo with your children and grandchildren in a luxurious hotel with a cup. But your insistence on taking a photo on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha has made 11 families wash their hands in tears every day. Can you give this father his son back?' the BJP Karnataka handle posted in Kannada on X. The video also evoked a plethora of responses from social media users, who slammed Bengaluru Police's security arrangements, while several believed that 'a photo opportunity cost so many lives.'

'RCB has lakhs of cricket fans': Letter to Karnataka govt shows warning was issued before stampede; new revelation puts pressure on administration

BENGALURU: A senior police officer had raised red flags over the lack of security personnel and potential crowd control issues just hours before a stampede killed 11 people outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on Wednesday. According to official letter accessed by the TOI, MN Karibasavana Gowda, who oversees legislature security, issued a written warning to the state government on the morning of the event. In a letter addressed to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Gowda cautioned against holding a felicitation at the Vidhana Soudha due to anticipated large crowds and insufficient police deployment. 'RCB has a fan following nationwide and lakhs of cricket fans will come to Vidhana Soudha if we organise a programme on the grand steps. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobust arrangements will be a problem,' the officer wrote. This fresh revelation now puts further pressure on the state govt, which is already in the eye of a storm for allegedly prioritising optics over public safety. Fallout and resignations The revelation has intensified public scrutiny of the Karnataka government, which is already facing criticism for allegedly prioritising optics over safety during the celebrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo On Saturday, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced that it had accepted the resignations of two of its senior officials—Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer E S Jairam—who stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the tragedy. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by KSCA president Raghuram Bhat. 'They placed a letter of resignation in front of the committee, which was accepted after acknowledging the work they have done over the last two and half years,' Bhat told reporters. While Bhat did not disclose the names of interim replacements, sources said MS Vinay and Manjunatha Raju are the frontrunners for the roles. The current managing committee's term ends on September 30, with elections due in October or November. Legal action and investigation An FIR has been registered against the KSCA in connection with the stampede. Bhat said the association would fully cooperate with ongoing investigations. 'It is a very delicate issue. When the appropriate time comes, I myself will call all of you and give detailed information,' he said, adding that some senior police officials had visited the KSCA office during the day as part of the investigation process. 'We have already informed the government and the honourable High Court that we will cooperate fully with the enquiry. We will never shy away from anything.' Bhat ruled out dissolving the entire managing committee despite mounting pressure. 'Nothing of the sort. The game must go on, and that is why the emergency meeting was held. Rest all is fine at the moment,' he said. Bengaluru stampede The stampede, which occurred as lakhs of cricket fans gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title win, left 11 dead and 75 injured. The incident triggered outrage and raised serious questions about event planning, crowd management, and safety oversight by both the state administration and KSCA.

‘I Want To Stay Here Too': Father Mourns Son's Death In Bengaluru Stampede

Last Updated: Four individuals have been arrested concerning the stampede, and five police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, have been suspended. A heart-wrenching video of a father mourning over his son's grave has brought the personal tragedies of the stampede to the forefront, where 11 people lost their lives and 47 were injured at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB's IPL victory celebrations turned chaotic. The incident occurred on Wednesday when people celebrated the RCB's victory in the Indian Premier League. In the video, a man, BT Lakshma, who is the father of 21-year-old Bhumik Lakshman, who died in the stampede, wails at his son's grave at their native village in Hassan district. 'What happened to my son should not happen to anyone," he says, lying down on the ground with his head pressed against the grave. 'The land I had bought for him is where his memorial has been built." Refusing to let go, Lakshman says, 'I don't want to go anywhere else now. I want to stay here too," as two other men approach him and help him to his feet. 'No father should have to face what I am facing," he laments. Bhumik, a final-year engineering student, was among the thousands of people who had gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday to celebrate and catch a glimpse of the players who had won RCB the IPL title after an 18-year wait. He was one of the 11 victims, including a 14-year-old girl, who tragically lost their lives in the stampede. A video of Lakshman mourning at his son's grave has gone viral. It has also been shared by the Karnataka BJP, which criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, accusing them of having 'murderous" intentions. 'Murderous CM @siddaramaiah sir, murderous DCM @DKShivakumar sir, if you had made up your mind, you could have taken a photo with your children and grandchildren in a luxurious hotel with a cup. But your insistence on taking a photo on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha has made 11 families wash their hands in tears every day. Can you give this father his son back?" the handle of the Karnataka unit of the BJP posted in Kannada on X. Earlier, after the tragedy, Lakshman had spoken to reporters and made a heartfelt appeal to the government, requesting that his son's body not be subjected to dissection during the post-mortem. 'I had only one son, and now I have lost him. Please give me his body, don't conduct a post-mortem and cut his body into pieces. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister may visit us (the victims of the tragedy), but they can't bring him back," he had said, fighting tears. Meanwhile, the Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of politicising the issue and said the Karnataka government is doing all it can to help the families of the victims and ensure that a tragedy like this doesn't occur again. Four individuals have been arrested concerning the stampede, and five police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, have been suspended. Additionally, the Karnataka government has taken disciplinary action against CM Siddaramaiah's Political Secretary, K Govindaraj, and the state intelligence department chief, dismissing them from their positions.
