'Train-murder case': ‘Killer' set free from jail as victim returns home in UP

Time of Indiaa day ago

BAREILLY: Undertrial Narendra Kumar Dubey, 43, lodged in prison for two-and-a-half years for allegedly 'killing another man by throwing him from a running train' was released by a court here Wednesday, as the 'victim' was found alive in Gujarat, reports Kanwardeep Singh .
Additional district and sessions judge Pankaj Kumar Srivastava said in the order that the person thrown off the train by Dubey was someone else. If the family of that person comes forward and wishes to file a case against Dubey, the case proceedings will go on.
In Dec 2022, passengers on Delhi-bound 14205Ayodhya Cantt-Old Delhi Express threw one Mohd Ahtab, 26, off the train after suspecting him to be a mobile phone thief on a stretch between Shahjahanpur and Bareilly stations.
When the train stopped in Bareilly, Dubey, from Ayodhya, was arrested by GRP and sent to jail under IPC section 302 (murder), based on videos and testimonies by passengers.
Later, a body was found in Shahjahanpur, and through social media, a man from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, Mohammad Yaqub, identified it as that of his son Ahtab. The family then conducted the last rites in Shahjahanpur.
A year after the incident, Ahtab returned home from Gujarat but didn't inform Shahjahanpur police.
Villagers in Muzaffarpur made videos of Ahtab and sent them to police and he was brought to UP. He stated in court that he was not on the train that day as he was working in Gujarat in the tailoring and embroidery industry. The court then ordered the release of Dubey, declaring him innocent.
Ahtab's father Mohammad Yaqub told the court the body shown to him looked like that of his son, and other members of the family also felt the same way.
The brutal murder of the incident was posted on social media and shared widely online. In a 66-second video — purportedly shot by a passenger — several people could be seen laughing and assaulting the man. One of the passengers, identified as Narendra Kumar Dubey, could be seen abusing and pushing him out of the general compartment even as the man was begging for his life.

UP: Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amid tight security

Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. After offering namaaz, prayers were made for the safety of the jawans posted at the borders and safeguarding the country. In a video message, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, on Saturday, reminded the Muslim community to follow the advisory issued by the Islamic Centre of India and sacrifice only those animals on which there are no bans, adding that sacrifice should take place at the designated spots." "The blood of the sacrificed animal should not be released in drains, and the waste should be disposed of as per the arrangements made by the Municipal Corporation. After offering namaaz, one should pray for the development and safety of the nation and also for the Army jawans safeguarding our borders," he said. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Meetings were held with religious leaders, peace committees, civil defence personnel and prominent citizens, in coordination with local magistrates and other relevant departments, to foster coordination and dialogue. Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

Mentally unstable man dies by suicide after killing wife in Nalanda

Patna: A mentally unstable man killed his 35-year-old wife and then died by suicide after locking himself in his room at Madarchak village under Hilsa police station area in Nalanda district on Saturday morning. According to police, Chhathu Ravidas (40) first attacked his wife, Lachhu Devi, with a stone grinder (silwat) following an argument over a domestic dispute, and then pushed her off the roof of their house. Their children, who witnessed the violent altercation between their parents, fled the house and informed neighbours about the incident. Hilsa SDPO, Ranjan Kumar, said, "Upon receiving information about the incident, the local police arrived at the spot. They broke open the room and found Ravidas unconscious. He was rushed to the sub-divisional hospital, where doctors declared him dead." At the time of the incident, his parents were in Patna, where his mother was receiving medical treatment. The couple is survived by five children, he said. Delhi Police nabs man in Kerala for duping retired colonel of ₹18.8 lakh in forex investment fraud

New Delhi, A 29-year-old fisherman from Kerala has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly duping a retired army colonel of over ₹18.8 lakh after promising high returns from foreign exchange investments, an official said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sreejith Rajendran, a resident of Azheekal in Kollam district of Kerala, was apprehended from his hometown, he said. The police said Sreejith, who studied till Class 10 and is a fisherman by profession, was enticed into the racket by a friend who flaunted a lavish lifestyle funded through fraudulent means. Driven by greed and a desire for easy money, he became part of the syndicate. Earlier this year, another accused, Sunil, from Jodhpur was arrested in connection with the same gang. The mastermind of the operation, Anandhu Lal from Kollam, is still at large, according to the police. "The victim, a retired Colonel, was lured into the scam in December 2023 after receiving unsolicited messages and calls from a woman who identified herself as 'Cute Arvin Anghita'. She convinced him of potential profits in the forex market and encouraged repeated investments," Deputy Commissioner of Police Harsh Indora said. Under the guise of high returns, the complainant was coaxed into transferring money in several instalments. When he sought to withdraw funds, he was told to make additional payments to process the withdrawal, he said, adding that eventually, a total of ₹18,80,818 was taken from him. A case was registered on August 31, 2024, under the relevant sections of the IPC and an investigation was launched. "During the probe, it was found that the cheated funds were routed through several bank accounts, most of which had been opened using fake addresses and mobile numbers," the officer said. One such transaction amounting to ₹5.93 lakh was traced to a bank account in Oachira, Kollam, held by the accused Sreejith Rajendran. The amount was withdrawn in cash on the same day, he said. A police team was dispatched to Kerala and the accused was nabbed from Azheekal.
