SEC amps up fines to $500,000 for rushing field, storming court
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is ratcheting up penalties on schools whose fans storm the field or rush the court, doing away with an escalating fine system and now charging $500,000 per incident.
'The motivation was 'field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,'' commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday in announcing the decision. 'The random nature of, if you're the one getting rushed, it doesn't feel good. It might be the first time (it happened) there, but it might be your sixth time in a row, literally.'
The conference also has the authority to wave the fine if the visiting team and officials are allowed to get to the locker room before fans descend.
The new policy replaces an old one that called for an escalating fine structure that started with $100,000 for the first offense, raised to $250,000 for the second then hit $500,000 for the third and subsequent incidents.
The SEC first instituted a fine structure for field storming in 2004, but it didn't stop the problem.
In 2022, Tennessee fans stormed the field after ending a 15-game losing streak to Alabama. But things became congested and some of the Crimson Tide players were trapped; a video surfaced of a Tide player thrusting his arm toward a woman's head as he tried to get off the field.
Last year, Vanderbilt beat Alabama at home, triggering fans to rush the field, tear down the goalposts and parade them to the Cumberland River. The Commodores were fined $100,000 and, per SEC policy, that money went to Alabama, which also received $100,000 for an incident after a loss at Tennessee last season.
Vanderbilt got fined twice more last basketball season, the last of which cost $500,000.
'We try to set some expectations to the fan base of 'We'll welcome your celebration, but let's let the team from the visiting institution and the officials depart,'' Sankey said.

Blackhawks hire Vellucci as an assistant coach under Blashill
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. Vellucci, 58, spent the previous five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. Vellucci also was an assistant coach for the U.S. when it won the world championship last month. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were part of the winning American team. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group,' Blashill said in a release. 'That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. Olympics get Honda as auto sponsor for 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles signed Honda as a 'founding partner' Monday, giving the upcoming Summer Games their sixth new sponsor this year and their first tier-one sponsor since 2021. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Price tags for this level of sponsorship have been reported to start at around $200 million. The deal fills a hole for LA28 in the automotive category, which is considered one of the most important in the Olympic world. Toyota had been the Olympics auto sponsor before declining to renew its deal after 2024. Delta and Comcast are the other top-level sponsors for LA28. John Slusher, the CEO of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Properties, told Sports Business Journal that the new deal brings the operation to more than $1.5 billion in sponsorship sales, with a goal of $2.5 billion. Part of this deal calls for Honda to work with the organizing committee on a vehicle fleet to help move athletes and officials around Southern California during the games. ___ AP sports:

Former US midfielder Benny Feilhaber hired as coach of 2nd-tier Oakland Roots
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former U.S. national team midfielder Benny Feilhaber was hired Monday as coach of the Oakland Roots of the United Soccer League's second-tier Championship. Coach Gavin Glinton was fired earlier Monday after the team opened its league schedule with three wins, seven losses and one tie. The Roots also lost their opening match in the U.S. Open Cup to Tacoma in the third round. The 40-year-old Feilhaber scored two goals in 44 international appearances from 2007-17 and was part of the American team at the 2010 World Cup, appearing in three matches as a substitute. His tiebreaking goal on a 22-yard volley broke a 73rd-minute tie and lifted the U.S. over Mexico 2-1 in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Born in Brazil and a graduate of UCLA, Feilhaber played for Hamburg, Derby, Aarhus, New England, Kansas City and Los Angeles FC during a club career from 2006-19. Since retiring as a player, he has been an assistant coach at UCLA, Kansas City under-17 coach and head coach of Sporting KC II in third-tier MLS Next Pro. Feilhaber came out of retirement to play for the fourth-tier Omaha Menace when it beat Sporting KC II by 2-1 in the first round of the Open Cup on March 19, and he converted a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss to Union Omaha in the second round on April 2.
