Debris smashed through the walls, trapping us: Survivor
1 2 3 Guwahati: It was the quick action of the neighbours that saved lives on Friday night, when a devastating landslide struck the Paschim Rupnagar area, trapping members of the Rajbangshi family. Geetarani Rajbangshi, the wife of deceased Maneshwar Rajbangshi, recalled the harrowing moment when the massive wall of debris came crashing down, trapping her, her elderly mother-in-law Renu Barman, and her minor daughter. Their miraculous escape, Geetarani said, was only possible because neighbours rushed to their rescue. "We have lived here for about 50 years, and an incident of such magnitude has never happened to us. My husband had gone to sleep, but he heard some sound in the backyard, so he went to investigate — that's when the entire mass of mud and a huge boulder came crashing down, taking him with it. We rushed to the corner of the sitting room, when the debris smashed through the walls, trapping us," Geetarani added. She said her mother-in-law, who faces difficulty in walking due to a nerve disorder, sustained injuries to her back as she was closer to the debris. "The entire area was covered in a thick blanket of dust, and I screamed at the top of my lungs. Suddenly, a few of our neighbours burst through the front door. They cut through the living room door to create space for us to escape. They cleared the debris with their bare hands and carried us to safety," she also said. The rescue teams from state disaster response force and national disaster response force, who had began their search and rescue operations from Friday night, retrieved the deceased body of Maneshwar Rajbangshi after 17 hours on Saturday evening.

Teachers pool funds for re-evaluation, help more students pass SSLC exam
Mangaluru: Teachers from several govt schools in Dakshina Kannada pooled funds to support the re-evaluation and retotalling of answer scripts for students who failed the SSLC exam. Their efforts paid off, with many students clearing the exam and a rise in the number of govt high schools recording 100% results. After revaluation and retotalling, Dakshina Kannada's SSLC pass percentage rose from 91.1% to 91.6%. The number of students who passed increased from 25,326 to 25,470, indicating that 144 students who were initially marked as 'failed' or 'incomplete' cleared the exam. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, said following the SSLC annual exam results, govt high school teachers in Dakshina Kannada voluntarily pooled funds to help students who narrowly missed passing marks to apply for reevaluation. "The cost per subject is Rs 810 for reevaluation and Rs 400 for paper viewing, which totals Rs 1,210, which many govt school students could not afford. Moved by their plight, teachers took the initiative to fund the process themselves. As a result, several students who were earlier declared failed cleared the exam, helping some schools achieve 100% pass results," he said. As per available data, Belthangady, Mangaluru North, and Puttur BEO limits each recorded 34 schools with 100% results. Among aided schools, the number of institutions with full results rose from 10 to 13, while unaided schools increased from 90 to 97. A high school teacher noted that if the revaluation process were free or more affordable, many govt school students would have opted for it.
