Black Ferns v USA live updates, Pacific Four Series test

NZ Herald24-05-2025

Live updates of the Pacific Four Series test between the Black Ferns and USA at Albany Stadium.
Match preview
After a successful season on the sevens circuit, Jorja Miller and Risaleaana Pouri-Lane have been given their chance to shine in the 15-a-side code.
The pair will make their debuts for the Black Ferns against the United States at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday, looking to further stake their claims to be in the World Cup squad.
'I think we're right where we need to be,' Black Ferns director of performance Allan Bunting said of his side's World Cup preparations.
'We've got a competitive group of ladies and, for me looking forward, selection is going to be hard and that's right where we need to be.'
Bunting said the players transitioning from the sevens programme had been doing plenty of homework ahead of a test that could see them crowned Pacific Four series champions.
Miller starting at openside flanker and Pouri-Lane at halfback are among eight changes to the run-on XV from the side who drew with Canada last weekend.
Tighthead prop Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu also comes into the starting XV for her debut, while hooker Vici-Rose Green is in line for her debut from the bench.
Last week's result has left the Pacific Four title on the line this weekend; a bonus-point win is likely to be enough for the Black Ferns to reclaim the title, as they go into the round with a points differential of 14 better than Canada's.
'That will matter, but if we get our stuff right, that's us,' Bunting said of the test between Canada and Australia.
'We've been focused on us, and there are a few things that we needed to work on from last week, and that's the important thing for us.'
Fellow Black Ferns Sevens players Theresa Setefano and Stacey Waaka will also get their first 15-a-side starts this season, named at second five-eighths and centre respectively. It's the same midfield combination that was so effective in the World Cup in 2022.
Other changes in the squad see Kate Henwood start at loosehead prop and Kaipo Olsen-Baker at No 8, which sees Liana Mikaele-Tu'u move to blindside flanker. In the backline, Katelyn Vahaakolo starts on the left wing in place of Ayesha Leti-I'iga.
On the bench, prop Awhina Tangen-Wainohu and lock Chelsea Bremner are also new inclusions to the match-day squad. Bremner initially missed selection for the Pacific Four squad, but gets an opportunity after a training injury ruled Dhys Faleafaga out for the season.
'We were consistent with our selection over the last couple of games and that was important,' Bunting said.
'Obviously, our ladies that have been playing sevens for a while, they haven't played 15s for a while, so we want to get them playing. That's the main reason why they're playing this week.'

More than 1000 former rugby players join concussion lawsuit

The number of former rugby players taking legal action against sports governing bodies on claims they suffered brain injuries during their careers has grown to more than 1000, a British law firm said overnight. Rylands Garth, based in London, said more than 520 ex-players from rugby union and rugby league joined the lawsuit by Friday last week, which was the deadline for new applicants set by a court ahead of a hearing in July and before the case potentially goes to trial next year. It takes the total number of players who are part of the lawsuit to approximately 1100, Rylands Garth said in a statement. The former players contend, according to Rylands Garth, that "rugby governing bodies failed to take reasonable action to protect them from the impacts of concussive and sub-concussive blows during their playing careers, despite knowing of the risks". Claimants are seeking compensation from World Rugby, the English Rugby Football Union and Welsh Rugby Union — governing bodies in 15-a-side rugby — and the English Rugby Football League and British Amateur Rugby League Association — from 13-a-side rugby league — for lost earnings, medical bills and care costs associated with their injuries, the firm said. ADVERTISEMENT "Rylands Garth is also calling for urgent and substantive reform of the game to better protect the safety of current and future players — including the creation of an independent brain health ombudsman for the sport," it said. Among those to have previously joined the class action was World Cup-winning former England hooker Steve Thompson, former New Zealand prop Carl Hayman and former Wales flanker Alix Popham. "This surge in claimants exposes the deep-rooted issues in rugby," Rylands Garth said, adding: "Players continue to play almost all-year round, with many elite players soon to embark on extremely physical summer tours across the rugby world. We will continue to fight for justice for those who gave so much to the game." In a joint statement issued by World Rugby, the RFU and the WRU, the governing bodies said they "are aware of the latest update shared by the claimants' legal representatives with the final number of claimants." "We now await full details of their diagnosis and the claims being made. Our thoughts are with any former player facing challenges. "Across the game, we continue to build on a strong foundation of world-leading initiatives designed to make rugby union as safe as possible." That includes "smart mouthguard technology in the elite game, trials of lower tackle height in the community game, and the continued rollout of brain health services to support former players". ADVERTISEMENT Rylands Garth said it also represents approximately 130 former football players who are taking similar legal action against soccer governing bodies. The next court hearing for the soccer case is due on June 26.

Pakistan to play in Colombo when India hosts women's World Cup

Politically-estranged India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2013, will play their matches in neutral venues when either country hosts an ICC event, the sport's global governing body announced in December. "The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying as two alternative venues have been identified for one semi-final and the final," the ICC said. "Colombo will be the venue for the first semi-final and the final only if Pakistan qualify for those stages." Bengaluru, where the tournament will start with India playing in the opening match, will host the final on November 2 if Pakistan are knocked out earlier in the tournament, the ICC added. Bengaluru will also stage the second semi-final on October 30, a day after the first semi-final in Colombo or Guwahati. Visakhapatnam and Indore are the two other host cities for the eight-team tournament. India played all their matches in Dubai when Pakistan hosted the men's Champions Trophy this year, including the final which they won. Both the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League were suspended last month amid clashes between the two countries following an attack targeting tourists that killed 26 people in Kashmir in April. Matches resumed after a ceasefire was announced. The neutral venue arrangement between the countries will also be in place for the men's T20 World Cup in 2026, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka, and the women's T20 World Cup in 2028 in Pakistan. - Reuters
