Soccer-Maresca plans player rotation as Chelsea battle heat and fatigue at Club World Cup

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -The gruelling North American summer heat and the toll of a long season have forced Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to adjust his team as they prepare for Friday's top-of-the-table clash against Brazilian giants Flamengo at the Club World Cup.
With the game expected to decide who will finish top of Group D ahead of the knockout rounds, Maresca said that he has reduced the intensity and duration of training sessions to ensure his players remain competitive.
'It's not easy because of the temperature,' Maresca told a press conference on Thursday.
'We're going to try to rotate players. Unfortunately for us, the Brazilian team are more used to playing in this kind of temperature. But it doesn't matter. We're going to try to do our best and win the game.
'We need to rotate three, four, or five players each game. It's impossible for players to be at 100% for 11 months straight. So we are trying to train less and prioritise tactical aspects rather than physical intensity in our daily sessions.'
Chelsea resumed training for the tournament shortly after winning the Europa Conference League title on May 28 following the conclusion of their Premier League campaign and Maresca is focused on winning more silverware.
'This feels like pre-season because we had some days off after the Premier League and then started again,' he explained. 'But it's not pre-season; it's a big competition. We're here to win games and go as far as possible.'
The Italian manager expressed his support for forward Mykhailo Mudryk, who was charged with an anti-doping rule violation by England's FA on Wednesday.
'Misha is a Chelsea player and I trust all Chelsea players,' he said.
'I haven't spoken to him recently but the last time I did, he seemed fine. Until I have more information, there's not much I can add.'
Chelsea and Flamengo are tied on three points at the top of Group D following 2-0 wins against LAFC and Esperance de Tunis respectively.

Premier League fines Man City £1m for repeated kick-off delays
LONDON, June 20 — Manchester City have been fined more than £1 million (RM5.73 million) by the Premier League over delayed kick-offs in nine matches last season. Premier League officials announced yesterday that Pep Guardiola's side had breached rules around kick-off and restart times between October and February. The longest delay was two minutes and 24 seconds before the resumption of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in December. The Premier League said City had accepted the breaches and apologised for the incidents. The fines total £1.08 million ($1.45 million). 'Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs,' a Premier League statement said. 'It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.' It is not the first time City have been in trouble for their tardy kick-offs. The club were fined more than £2 million last year for 22 breaches of the kick-off and restart rules. Guardiola's men finished third in the Premier League last season as their four-year reign as champions came to an end. Chelsea boss Maresca ‘trusts' Mudryk after doping charge
PHILADELPHIA, June 20 — Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said yesterday he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association with violating anti-doping rules, but confirmed the club were looking to strengthen in his position. ''Mischa' is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players,' Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup meeting with Flamengo today. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an 'adverse finding in a routine urine test' in December. He could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the Uefa Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late last month. 'The last time I spoke with 'Mischa' was in Poland and he was quite good. 'Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him.' Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for €100 million (RM489 million) but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. Wary of Flamengo Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. Filipe Luis, who came up against Maresca when both played in Spain, said he had 'amazing memories' of his time at Chelsea after making 26 appearances under Jose Mourinho in 2014/15. 'I had the opportunity to win the Premier League with Mourinho and also the League Cup, so two titles in one season, and I was really happy there,' he said. 'I didn't play enough, especially because Cesar Azpilicueta was amazing that season and didn't let me play.
