Floods worsen in Manipur valley, landslides cut off NHs

Imphal: Life have been severely disrupted in Manipur due to flooding triggered by incessant rainfall. Residential areas have been inundated, with the Iril and Nambul rivers swelling beyond danger levels.
Reports indicate that two children were swept away in a flash flood on Saturday morning, though official confirmation is still awaited. A viral video circulating on social media shows frantic rescue efforts as people attempt to locate the missing children.
State commissioner-cum-secretary of water resources department, Ningthouja Geoffrey, has issued an advisory recommending the evacuation of residents living in flood-prone areas along the Imphal River within Imphal city.
The advisory highlights that Kangpokpi, which serves as the catchment area for the river, has received 175 mm of rainfall in 72 hours from 6am on May 28 to 6am on Saturday. Based on past trends, an average daily rainfall of 45 mm over three consecutive days — a total of 135 mm within 72 hours — has been known to cause flooding in the Imphal Valley.
This benchmark is used by the water resources department in determining emergency flood control measures.

In May 2024, Kangpokpi saw a record rainfall of 131 mm within 24 hours due to Cyclone Remal, leading to river breaches, overflows, and widespread devastation in Imphal Valley. With the Imphal river already flowing above high flood level, overflows and breaches have occurred at multiple locations, and runoff water from Kangpokpi is expected to exacerbate the situation further.
"The surface run off of rainwaters from Kangpokpi will now be reaching Imphal valley, and is expected to lead to overflows at more stretches along Imphal river,' it stated.

Heat, humidity return as monsoon progress stalls

1 2 Bhubaneswar: With the further advance of southwest monsoon stalled, Odisha is once again reeling under heat and humidity with day temperature going up in several districts. Paralakhemundi recorded the highest temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, followed by Bhubaneswar and Nayagarh, both recording 38C. Relative humidity ranged between 45% and 91% in places across the state, increasing the discomfort level. "Monsoon has not advanced for the last three days. Due to cloudless sky, temperature increased in various parts of the state on Sunday, and the humidity levels also went up," said IMD weather scientist Uma Shankar Das. "Due to lack of major rainfall, temperature increased slightly. There are chances of light to moderate rainfall at isolated places on Monday and Tuesday, while a warning for hot and humid conditions has been issued for coastal districts from Wednesday and Thursday," said Sanjeev Dwivedi, another weather scientist. IMD sources said Biridi in Jagatsinghpur district received the highest rainfall of 90 mm in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Sunday. Bamra, Derabis and Sundargarh town, each recorded 40 mm in the period. IMD forecast that light and moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Raygada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Ganjam district on Monday and Tuesday. "The weather has become so oppressive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo As the monsoon hit the state early, we were happy, but the joy was short-lived. High humidity is causing discomfort and dizziness," said Saswati Panda, a homemaker. While IMD predicted above-normal rainfall in June, during the pre-monsoon period between March 1 and May 31, the state recorded 238.6 mm against the normal of 128.6 mm, which is 86% higher. During the pre-monsoon period, 21 districts recorded excess rainfall of 60% or more, while 7 districts recorded rainfall between 20% and 59%, and 2 districts recorded normal rainfall, official sources said. The special relief commissioner (SRC) has asked district collectors to remain alert and be prepared for any eventuality due to possible adverse weather conditions.

2025 hurricane season: Unseen floods, lightning-fast storms, and inland fury threaten millions in US beyond the coastline

National Hurricane Center (NHC) Director Michael Brennan urges Americans to prepare as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins, emphasizing that understanding personal risk is crucial. Reflecting on the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in 2024, which resulted in 251 deaths and approximately $78.7 billion in damages, Brennan highlights the importance of early planning and awareness. "Getting ready for hurricane season is all about knowing that risk and starting the hurricane season ready for what that risk might be and how it might present itself to you," Brennan said. Key Takeaways for Hurricane Preparedness : by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ¿Prostatitis? Este remedio casero está ayudando a miles de hombres a recuperarse. Glowify Más información Undo Know Your Risk : Determine if you live in a storm surge zone and have an evacuation plan . Evacuating just tens of miles inland can significantly reduce danger. Understand Flood Risks : Flooding can occur far from the storm's landfall and is often the deadliest aspect of hurricanes. Helene's aftermath demonstrated that heavy rainfall can lead to catastrophic flooding even in inland areas. Avoid Complacency : Do not base your response on previous storms. Each hurricane is unique, and conditions can change rapidly. Helene intensified quickly, leaving little time for preparation. Prepare in Advance : Have plans for pets, elderly relatives, and those with medical needs. Ensure you have the necessary supplies and know how to use equipment like generators safely. Stay Informed : Follow trusted sources such as local government websites, the National Weather Service , and the NHC for updates and evacuation orders. The scars from Hurricane Helene are still evident, particularly in places like Chimney Rock Village, North Carolina, where a third of businesses were destroyed, and recovery efforts continue. The storm's impact extended beyond immediate damage, with significant tree loss in Asheville increasing vulnerability to future climate events . As the season progresses, Brennan emphasizes the need for vigilance: "You could have a storm really develop and threaten you within just a couple of days, and that's not the time to develop your hurricane plan. That's when you want to put [the plan] into practice." Live Events With forecasts predicting an above-average hurricane season due to warmer ocean temperatures, the call to action is clear: understand your risks, prepare early, and stay informed to protect yourself and your community.
