Cleveland Guardians owner Lawrence Dolan dies at 94
CLEVELAND — Lawrence J. Dolan, owner of Cleveland's major league baseball team since 2000, has died at age 94.
The Cleveland Guardians put out a statement Monday saying Dolan died Sunday night of natural causes.
'Mr. Dolan invested his entire life in Greater Cleveland and impacted our community on so many levels,' said Bob DiBiasio, Guardians senior vice president of public affairs, in a statement. 'From his service to our country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines, his many philanthropic acts of kindness, career in law, business, education, and sports, many benefited from his engagement, influence, and passion. Especially in the world of sports.'
Dolan, a Cleveland native, purchased the team from Richard Jacobs in 2000 for $320 million. The Dolan family has a 75% stake in the club and is the longest-tenured owners in Cleveland franchise history.
Guardians Chairman and CEO Paul Dolan, Larry Dolan's son, took over as the team's primary control person in 2013.
'We are saddened by the loss of our Dad, but lucky to have him as part of our lives as long as we did,' he said in a statement. 'He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was passionate about his family, work, our community and his love of our local sports teams, including owning the Cleveland Guardians.'
The franchise was known as the Cleveland Indians before changing its name to the Guardians after the 2021 season. Over the past 24 seasons, Cleveland has won seven American League Central Division titles, made nine postseason appearances and advanced to the 2016 World Series before losing to the Chicago Cubs in seven games. Cleveland also hosted the 2019 MLB All-Star Game.
'I am saddened by the passing of Cleveland native Larry Dolan, whose family's quarter-century ownership has made their hometown team a consistent winner and a staple of their community,' MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. 'He strongly believed in mentoring young people and using the Guardians as a way to impact Greater Cleveland. Larry also served the industry by bringing his professional expertise to the Major League Executive Council and the Ownership Committee, and he served on two labor negotiating committees.'
Dolan is survived by his wife Eva, six children and 21 grandchildren. His nephew, James Dolan, owns the New York Knicks, New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden.

TORONTO - Dr. Ron Taylor, a two-time World Series-winning pitcher and longtime Toronto Blue Jays team physician, has died. He was 87. The Blue Jays confirmed Taylor's death in a statement Monday. A cause of death was not provided. Taylor, who was born in Toronto on Dec. 13, 1937, played 10 seasons in the majors from 1962 to 1972 after signing with the Cleveland Indians in 1955. He threw 11 scoreless innings at Fenway Park in his big league debut on April 11, 1962, before surrendering a 12th-inning grand slam in a 4-0 defeat. He joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1963 and helped them win a World Series the following year. He was a key member of the 1969 'Miracle Mets' championship team. He earned a win out of the bullpen against Atlanta. Louis in the National League Championship Series, then surrendered no hits in 2 1/3 innings with a save in two appearances in the World Series against the favoured Baltimore Orioles. Taylor also pitched with Houston and San Diego. He had a career 45-43 record with a 3.93 earned-run average, 464 strikeouts and 74 saves. After retiring in 1972, he returned to Toronto and received a medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1977. He joined the Blue Jays as team physician in 1979 and earned the nickname 'Dr. Baseball' as he served in the role for 30 years, a span that included the team's World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. Taylor was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani are the leading vote-getters in the first round of MLB All-Star Game voting released on Monday. Judge has received 1,568,527 votes thus far through Phase 1 of voting, according to MLB. If that lead holds, he would be the first player to finish as the top All-Star vote-getter since Alex Rodriguez in 2007-08. Ohtani has 1,398,771 votes and could certainly overtake Judge between now and when this phase of voting concludes on June 26.
